Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT In this paper, the author seeks to outline and theorize the emergence and formation of a diasporic Italian American identity. The researcher focuses on historical concerns as well as contemporary dynamics but is principally interested in the creation of an identity that is sustained even today while being internally diverse and continually subject to change. The author will illustrate this, concerning the Italian-American community in Philadelphia. The paper will be concluded with how a diasporic space is formed and how it mutually interacts with the formation of a diasporic identity. Moreover, the paper will explain how the process of formation of collective identification, or nationality, is imagined and re-imagined in an Italian-American community in South Philadelphia. Nel 1985, tre anni dopo l’omicidio di Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, l’allora direttore di questa Biblioteca, Carmela Perretta, incaricò la bibliotecaria Gioconda Chindemi di redigere una bibliografia sulla mafia, un genere nuovo in un’Isola dove si dichiarava che “la mafia non esiste, è un’invenzione del nord”. Questa prima opera ebbe un notevole successo anche fuori dalla Sicilia, tanto che nel 2000 un’altra bibliotecaria, Aurora Dioguardi, pubblicò una nuova edizione aggiornata di quest’opera. Sono passati ormai 36 anni dall’assassinio di Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, di sua moglie Emanuele Setti Carraro e dell’agente di scorta Domenico Russo e da allora molto è cambiato grazie ai sempre più numerosi interventi delle forze dell’ordine che hanno portato all’arresto di un buon numero di mafiosi, smantellando più di un’organizzazione. Questa Biblioteca, nell’ambito dei suoi compiti istituzionali, fin dal 1985 ha avviato una costante ricerca e acquisizione di tutte le opere edite in Italia e all’estero relative al crimine organizzato e al terrorismo, e seppure con molte difficoltà per la mancanza dei necessari fondi che negli ultimi anni hanno impedito di acquisire la più recente produzione, oggi questa biblioteca possiede una consistente raccolta di opere in più lingue, costituita da poco più di 1.700 opere, relative alla criminalità organizzata.
