INVERSHIN CEMETERY A Survey of Its Memorials. NH 5754 / 9721 By Stuart Farrell B.A A.I.F.A F.S.A.Scot November 2008 Abstract This survey was conducted as part of a wider study of the graveyards of the Highlands by the author. This report gives details of inscriptions and an index of surnames. Location © Ordnance Survey Cover: Cemetery facing west. 2 Site Plan – Not to Scale By author - 25 August 2008 3 Introduction The cemetery at Invershin is situated to the north of the village of Invershin. It is situated close to the A837, close to Invershin Hall. Inhumations have taken place here from its earliest beginnings and continue to the present day. This survey concentrates on those stones in the older part of the cemetery only. Site History Unknown when the cemetery was first used. The site is not mentioned in the Old Statistical Account (Sinclair, 1791-99) or in the New Statistical Account (NSA 1845). The site is not recorded in the National Monuments Record of Scotland. Highland Council’s Historic Environment Record only notes the survey work listed below and that it is marked on the 1st edition OS. The site is not recorded in the NMRS. Site is marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1879 (Sheet 107.4, surveyed 1874) as ‘Grave Yard’. The Ordnance Survey Name Book does not give it any description, though in the book of survey for the parish its extent is noted as 0.103 acres (James, 1875). The site is unchanged on the 2nd edition OS map of 1906 (Sheet 107.4, revised 1903). By the next edition of 1968 (NH5697-5797, revised 1966) the cemetery has been extended to how it is today. Previous Work In the 1970's the method promoted by the Scottish Genealogy Society, and used by Cowper & Ross (1981) is to summarise the inscription. (See Appendix 1 for their work) They concentrated on stones with pre-1855 dates and only noted names and dates. Epitaphs are dropped, also occasionally placename details, giving little or no indication of whether those interred are from the local community or if the placename is just the place of death, also who erected the stone, if included in the inscription, is also sometimes omitted. Spelling is often corrected diffusing the inscription. They did occasionally indicate the type of stone recorded and also occasionally gave notes on other records that would have genealogical information. Their work is noticeable of 4 indicating stones now lost, but must be taken with caution due to a frequency of mistakes and the works overall shortcomings. Date and condition of Monuments The memorials in the cemetery date from the early 19th century to the modern day. They are in a variety of styles including headstones, rusticated, pedestal, and tablestones. The vast majority are in good condition, only a few being damaged or broken. This survey follows the guidelines of the CBA (Mytum, 2000) and the CSA (Willsher, 1985). Photographs taken as part of the survey and the recording sheets have been archived with the NMRS, Edinburgh.
