We thank SAFPI for providing support to the poor and marginalized families residing under the diocese of Irinjalakuda. Alphonsa’s Realization of dreams: Mrs. Alphonsa and her family had no chance to survive, at the time of selection to SAFP. She is residing in Poomangalam Panchayath. Mr. Antony, her husband, is a mental patient. They were living in extreme poverty in a joint family. They lived in a hut with leakage during rainy season. She has two children. Both of them are girls. Presently they are studying in plus two and Plus One respectively. She is very active member as well as has acquired a tremendous will power after joining the SAFP programme. She regularly attends all regional and central level meetings. She after joining SAFP, gained courage to take the responsibility of the whole family and by the frequent advice she got confidence to take up each responsibility of her family and to be self reliant. Seeing her confidence she was called by nearest family for getting her household assistance through which she started earning and contributing her share to the family. With the assistance received from SAFP (Rs.5000/-) they started goat rearing and the income generated out of goat rearing they utilized for house construction. This improved their financial status and inspired to save money by joining in a chitty for constructing a new house. SAFP – Support and the earnings from the household work prompting them to built a new house of their own thus fulfilling their dreams. She also had taken the maximum benefit of going to the gramasabha and acquired the fund for constructing a new house from panchayath. Now they are living happily in a new house with flooring done with tiles. They find a very good income from their Household work and goat rearing. Today this family is more renowned and acquires a very good place in the society.

SPED-III is an integrated community development project implemented in 20 villages that stretch in to 3 Gramma Panchayaths namely Annamanada, Kuzhoor & Parakadavu. Tenure of the project is 5 years starting from 2011 to 2016. Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), a Canadian Government NGO contribute major share of the project cost. Facilitation, Coordination and Implementation of the project through partner NGOs are done by Save A Family Plan India, a national organization in stature. SAFI executes the project at village level in partnering with Village Action Teams.

Core Process of this project: · Creating an issue focused critical awareness among the primary stakeholders(target population) · Initiating a participatory micro planning process · Mobilizing local resources and public schemes and services for the implementation of activities identified as part of micro planning · Engaging in concurrent monitoring, reflection and evaluations processes so as to generate knowledge and insight from experience The major issue found in almost all villages is ‘Declining Health’ of the people due to Environmental Pollution, contamination of Air, Water and Soil. Hence the goal of this project is to improve the quality of life of the people. Village Action Team (VAT) constituted in each village is empowered to design project components, beneficiaries’ selection, fund allocation to each component, implementation and monitoring. Thus by tranferring power to people (decentralization) one of the major objectives of this project is justified here. Project team of SAFI plays herewith the role of a facilitator. During the reporting year, SAFI conducted several awareness seminars. PAGE 13 2012 ANNUAL ACTIVITY 2013 Report Sl. Water is found abundantly available in project area but water related issues are also in plenty. Water collected from wells is tested at Water Authority Lab at Kochi. Lab result shows that majority of drinking wells are contaminated with Coli form bacteria ranging from 9000 to 45000 nos. per 100 ml of water where it should be at Zero level. They have been strictly advised to drink boiled water only. Another issue related to water in Irimpungal and Poovathusserry villages is the presence of iron ore in well water. Also water is found to be of reddish-brown color. One Santosh Master a native of Palissery designed a water filter that answered to this particular problem. This unit costs Rs.5500- is affordable to even low income group. Of this Rs.3000- is project grant and the rest is met by beneficiary. Solar water unit Another major activity of SPED-III project is promotion of solar water equipment. Fuel consumption generates great volume of CO2, the major contributor of green house gas. Since the objective of this project is to improve the health status, this component has major stake. Fruit varieties like Mangosteen, Rambuttan (Lychee) -Sappotta-Pomegranate- are provided to villagers. 25 families in a village are part of this venture.
