To dream the impossible dream,

To fight the unbeatable foe,

To bear with the unbearable sorrow,

To run where the brave dare not go,

To right the unrightable wrong,

To try when your arms are too weary,

To reach the unreachable star!

This is my quest, to follow that star,

No matter how hopeless, no matter how far.

a To Reach the Unreachable Star; This Is My Quest, to Follow That Star, No Matter How Hopeless, No Matter How Far. n Michael Lower, principal at Marion Franklin since 1961, has served during a period of rapid growth and development. Not only has the student population increased, but significant changes have occured in the physi cal plant and the instructional curriculum. Eight years ago, less than one thousand students in grades nine through twelve were housed at Marion. At the present, almost twelve hundred students in only the last three grades are enrolled. Physical plant improvement has been one of Mr. Lower's major goals. In 1963 permanent bleachers were built for the football stadium. The next year a Radio-Speech-Dramatics Complex and Language Laboratories were installed. A power mechanics edition came the following year. The tempo increased. (1) a completely new vocational wing with vocational automobile mechanics, a electricity and electronics lab, and a child care assistant complex; (2) a remodeled gymnasium with hardwood floor and glass backboards; (3) an enclosed breeze- way; (4) a distributive education facility; (5) an air-conditioned, carpeted library; (6) and new art rooms were constructed in the latter part of the sixties. Next year's students can look forward to an occupational work ex perience center.

Devils Take City Title

The 1969 Red Devil Football team toppled opponents, jinxes, and traditions. The old adage always a bridesmaid, never a bride, went down the drain; Marion, runner-up in city league competition many times in past seasons finally grabbed all the marbles by compiling a 6-0 lea gue record. After downing DeSales in the season's opener, inability to con vert cost the year's only loss, a 21-18 decision at Lancaster. The rest of the way was smooth sail ing. The Central Pirates walked the plank to the tune of 24-12; a similar fate was met by Mohawk the following Friday, 37-0. In a non-league game, a Central Ca tholic League squad, Ready was doomed 27-8 by our mighty Devil's wrath. There were some proud fathers Dad's night as West came out on the short end of a 28-0 score. Homecoming was also a big celebration at Marion Stadium with Brook haven providing the evenings entertainment going down to defeat 49-0. Whetstone was dangled on the end of the pitchfork 33-8. South, always a hard fought game, was the only obstacle left to a city championship. The Bulldog was ferocious as usual, but when the final gun sounded, he ran off the field with tail between legs, more like a poodle than a bull. No doubt, the 1969 football edition at Marion was made up of a team, not individuals. Every player pro vided his needed measure. When fullback Billy Harris was sidelined with a leg injury, Marty Donley gained the necessary yardage. Then Donley had his troubles, suffering a knee injury in the Whetstone game. Then Harris was ready. Jeter, Burgess, Austin, and Gary Ross all picked up an extra yard when needed. Lloyd Ball's passing faking, and running combined with his leader ship qualities made him the best quarterback in the city.

127 Our backs were good, but a tough line out in front made them great. From tackle to tackle such boys as Dan Wright, Wendell Fellure, Steve Grabovich, Mike Clark, Ross, Roger Vanover, and Tom Douridas opened holes big enough to set the new vocational wing in. Mike Nicely and Roy Enyart made the big pass re ceptions at key times. The defensive team were mentally brilliant. Each member knew that to win, the other team had to score fewer points than theirs. The boys learned their lessons well. Three opponents were victims of the shutout route. Even more amazing is the fact that the opposition scored on the average less than seven points a game. The Seven-Up boys (Coach Jim Harper had his defensive line charge from a standing position) consisted of Wright, Grabovich, Trivanovich, McDowell, Ross, Leonard and Johnson. Austin, Donley, Ball and Harris did their chores in the defensive backfield. Dick Mileff was the backfield coach; Ron Mauller, defensive coach. The man at the head of this operation was Coach Jim Harper, an All-City coach of an All-City team. Reserve Team Wf^mm Hi^l^BHi Season's Results

With only three seniors on the varsity, the 1968-69 bas ketball season was one which could accurately be labeled a rebuilding year. A 58-56 triumph over the Middies of Bas ketball Town, U.S.A., high-lighted the season.

Wins over East, Central, and Brookhaven in City- League competition were the bright spots in the 6-11 season of Marion Franklin's reserve basketball team.

Wrestling

Although the wrestling team had a losing season, the Red Devils did demonstrate strength in some weight divisions. Third year wres tler, Rick Austin finished the sea son with an 13-3-1 match record and placed fourth in the 165-lb. division of the District Tournament. Coach Mileff hopes for a strong win ning season next year with eight returning lettermen.

Marion Nine Reaches State Tournament

Trailing by four runs in the fifth inning, Coach Charley Maloney's baseball nine pushed five big runs across the plate in the last three innings of the district champ ionship with Columbus East to nail a 10-9 victory and a trophy for the school display case. Lancaster was the next opponent. Eddie Reeves neat pitching job was well backed with the loaded bats of the other boys, the result being a 5-1 victory. Sopho more Gary Ross received the call to perform the mound chores in the regional champ ionship, a 3-2 victory over New Philadelphia. Rain postponed the initial contest in the state championships. For Marion, it really never did stop as the Devils were shut out 7-0 by a powerful East Shaw team. The 1968 Baseballers advancing farther than any athletic team in*the history of the school received fine pitching from Eddie Reeves, Odie Ross, Marty Donley, and Gary Ross. Terry Blackburn, Willie McClure, Gene Mileusnich, and Roy Owens formed an excellent defensive infield, which also provided bat power. Alvino Mil- ner covered a lot of territory patrolling centerfield. Clutch hits during the season boomed off the bats of other Devils including Eddie Ryan and the team's very capable backstop Buddy Wells.
