6 THE 24TH FIESTA BORICUA: ANOTHER INCREDIBLE AND MEMORABLE CULTURAL CELEBRATION Despite the many challenges we faced this year—including fewer sponsors, vendors and no mainstream media—the 24th annual Fiesta Boricua proved capable, once again, of staging a beautiful celebration of Puerto Rican music, cuisine, and culture. Across three days, thousands partook in the festivities along Paseo Boricua.

The pre-Fiesta program began with a press conference about PRESS CONFERENCE, FRIDAY SEPT. 1, 2017 Fiesta that was covered by various Chicago media and, most PHOTO: Samuel Q. Reyes importantly, Puerto Rico’s Radio Sin Fronteras and the national cable network, HITN. At the press conference, Alderman Roberto Maldonado and José E. López addressed the press conference. Ald. Maldonado, in particular, acknowledged the work of Sam Kirk, a Chicago based-artist, who is currently producing, in collaboration with 14 artists, a prominent public art exhibit using the doors of Paseo Boricua, entitled “Las Puertas de Paseo Boricua. Two new Paseo Boricua murals were also unveiled during the press conference. The mural “Oscar, We are MURAL UNVEILING, SEPT. 1, 2017 PHOTO: Samuel Q. Reyes the Groundswell of Liberation” is the work of Osvaldo Budet, and the second mural is the work Richard Santiago. The unveiling was accompanied by a dramatic performance from Papel Machete (a Puerto Rico-based performance troupe). The crowd then warmly welcomed the Puerto Rican patriot Oscar López Rivera and applauded his impassioned remarks.

That afternoon, at the Casita de Don Pedro, master cigar maker Harry Leon gave a detailed presentation on the historical TOBACCO WORKSHOP, SEPT. 1, 2017 importance of tobacco in Puerto Rico. Leon traced this history PHOTO: Charlie Billups from the island’s indigenous past to the twentieth century.

In the evening, nearly 200 people visited the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture to attend the Noche Jibara/ Guayabera Gala. Those present savored a delicious dinner prepared by Nellie’s Restaurant, witnessed a demonstration of cigar-making by Harry León, and danced to the sounds and rhythms of Grupo Aroma and Los Niños Trovadores de Comerio. The Puerto Rican patriot Oscar López Rivera thanked those NOCHE JÍBARA/GUAYBERA GALA gathered for honoring him and Jonathan Rivera-Lizardi’s daughter SEPT. 1, 2017 Mya Rivera and her mother Leonarda “Noni” Lazu with an award PHOTO: Ivan Vega 7 in Jonathan’s memory. Noche Jibara was coordinated by Sara González and emceed by Ivan Vega and Veronica Tirado. It also counted on the help of dozens of volunteers of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center.

Building on the joy, engagement, and energy that Noche Jibara set into motion, Saturday began with a breakfast conversatorio at Casa Puertorriqueña. This event featured a dialogue between the CONVERSATORIO, SATURDAY SEPT. 2, 2017 artist, Richard Santiago, and Oscar López Rivera. They shared PHOTO: Sam Q. Reyes their views about art, resistance, and the current challenges and possibilities facing Puerto Rico. The more than 150 people present also heard Dr. Julio Noboa present his conceptualization of the Puerto Rican Seal.

The next major activity of Fiesta Boricua was the now annual Misa Jíbara. It was officiated by Father Raul Morales and accompanied by the rich Puerto Rican mountain music of Grupo Aroma. This powerful spiritual experience moved hundreds of participants to recommit themselves to a path of social justice and to keep our rich cultural and spiritual heritage alive. Both Oscar and Jonathan were also highlighted in its sermon, prayers, and BACK-TO-SCHOOL CARNIVAL, SEPT. 1, 2017 musical presentations. PHOTO: Charlie Billups

What followed Misa Jíbara was a cultural explosion of Puerto Rican-ness that lasted through Sunday. This explosion spanned from the fogón of Doña Susana, to the Domino Encounter at Jayuya Barbershop, from the wrestling demonstrations to the cigar-making of Harry León, from the work of community artisans to the lechón asado of Barber Kenly “Gemelo” Figueroa, from the Afri-Caribe bombazo to the young performers on the Youth Stage, from old-school Salsa and merengue at the Papa’s Cache Stage to the Grand Finale by the three timbaleros—Pirulo, MISA JÍBARA, SATURDAY SEPT. 2, 2017 Pablito and Zayra—on the Main Stage. Additionally, participants PHOTO: Charlie Billups were treated to the spectacular local talent of Pinqy Ring, Lester Rey, and the sounds of the young interpretators of Puerto Rico’s mountain music, Los Niños Trovadores de Comerio.

Along with these cultural performances, the Back-to-School Community as a Campus Carnival attracted hundreds of kids to partake in the rides and games. Students received free school back packs.
