Grieg (1843-1907, Norway) SCANDINAVIAN, FINNISH & BALTIC CONCERTOS From the 19th Century to the Present A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Edvard Grieg (1843-1907, Norway) Born in Bergen. After being taught piano by his mother, he went to the Leipzig Conservatory at the age of 15 to study music, where his teachers included Ignaz Moscheles and Carl Reinecke. He then lived in Copenhagen and came under the influence of Niels W. Gade, who encouraged him to compose a symphony, and there he also met fellow Norwegian composer Rikard Nordraak who inspired Grieg to champion the cause of Norwegian music. He went on to become his country's greatest and most famous composer, who excelled in many genres including orchestral, chamber, solo piano, vocal and choral. • About the San Francisco Symphony
THE SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY The San Francisco Symphony, widely considered to be among the most artistically adventurous and innovative arts institutions in the U.S., celebrated its Centennial season in 2011-12. The Orchestra was established by a group of San Francisco citizens, music-lovers, and musicians in the wake of the 1906 earthquake, and played its first concert on December 8, 1911. Almost immediately, the Symphony revitalized the city’s cultural life. The Orchestra has grown in stature and acclaim under a succession of distinguished music directors: American composer Henry Hadley, Alfred Hertz (who had led the American premieres of Parsifal, Salome, and Der Rosenkavalier at the Metropolitan Opera), Basil Cameron, Issay Dobrowen, the legendary Pierre Monteux (who introduced the world to Le Sacre du printemps and Petrushka), Enrique Jordá, Josef Krips, Seiji Ozawa, Edo de Waart, Herbert Blomstedt (now Conductor Laureate), and current Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT). Led by Tilson Thomas, who begins his nineteenth season as Music Director in 2013-14, the SFS presents more than 220 concerts annually for an audience of nearly 600,000 in its home of Davies Symphony Hall, through its multifaceted education and community programs, and on national and international tours. Since Tilson Thomas assumed his post as the SFS’s eleventh Music Director in September 1995, he and the San Francisco Symphony have formed a musical partnership hailed as one of the most inspiring and successful in the country. His tenure with the Orchestra has been praised for outstanding musicianship, innovative programming, highlighting the works of American composers, and bringing new audiences to classical music.

  • The Use of Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto in the Film Brief
Soundtrack to a Love Story: The Use of Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto In the Film Brief Encounter Sean O’Connor MHL 252 April 22, 2013 Soundtrack to a Love Story 1 Classic FM, an independent radio station in the United Kingdom, has held a poll each Easter weekend since 1996 where listeners can vote on the top 300 most popular works of classical music. In 2013, Sergei Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor filled the number-one spot for the third year in a row. However, when BBC News first published an online article about this in April 2011, the headline did not mention the composition’s actual title. Instead, it referred to the concerto as the “Brief Encounter theme”1. Rather than being known as a concerto by Rachmaninov, many listeners in the United Kingdom recognize the music as the score prominently used in the classic British motion picture Brief Encounter (1945). How is it that so many listeners associate the music with this film rather than as arguably Rachmaninov’s most celebrated work? To determine the reason, listeners must critically analyze the concerto and the film together to find a unifying emotion through recurring themes. This analysis will do just that, examining each movement and where excerpts from those movements appear in the film. That analysis must begin, however, with background information on both works. Today, Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto is considered one of the finest musical compositions of the late romantic period, as well as, according to the poll mentioned earlier, one of the most popular pieces of “classical music” around the world.

Hess, Myra Irene Scharrer. However, Myra Hess had to wait for her ultimate breakthrough in her English homeland; for this reason, she initially had to earn her living by teaching. Her first major success abroad was her debut in Amster- dam, where she performed Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra un- der Willem Mengelberg in 1912. In 1922 followed her de- but in New York, where she was celebrated with equal en- thusiasm. Her career advanced rapidly from that point onwards, and she rose to the position of one of the most successful pianists in her homeland during the ensuing years. • 6013 Missa Solemnis
(LYRCD 6013) MISSA SOLEMNIS & Egmont Overture Ludwig van Beethoven AMA DEUS ENSEMBLE Valentin Radu, Artistic Director and Conductor Sarah Davis, Soprano Jody Kidwell, Mezzo-Soprano Timothy Bentch, Tenor Ed Bara, Bass PROGRAM NOTES: EGMONT, OP. 84, is a set of incidental music pieces for the 1787 play of the same name by Goethe. It consists of an overture and nine separate subsequent pieces for soprano and full orchestra. Beethoven wrote it between October 1809 and June 1810, and it was premiered on 15 June 1810. The overture, powerful and expressive, is one of the last works of his middle period; it has become as famous a composition as the Coriolan Overture, and is in a similar style to the Fifth Symphony which he completed two years earlier. When in 1809 the Burgtheater of Vienna asked Beethoven, a great admirer of Goethe, to compose incidental music for a revival of the play, he accepted with enthusiasm. It recalled themes close to his own political preoccupations, already expressed in his opera Leonore (renamed Fidelio, in the definitive 1814 version) and in his overture Coriolan (in 1807). 1 MISSA SOLEMNIS, OP. 123 “The Missa Solemnis is the greatest work I have composed so far.” Even allowing for the facts that Beethoven was telling this to a publisher and that in1822 he had not yet composed the Ninth Symphony and the last string quartets, his declaration must be taken seriously nevertheless. The Mass is Beethoven’s largest and longest composition (not counting the opera Fidelio), and yet at times also one of his most intimate and personal.

  • L'importanza Dell'etica Nella Grande Interpretazione Musicale: Testimonianze E Incontri Con Celebri Pianisti
