H. G. Wells : Love And Mr. Lewisham before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Love And Mr. Lewisham:

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sheer comic delightBy John FitzpatrickPeople who know H. G. Wells through his futuristic works like ldquo; The Time Machinerdquo; or ldquo; The War of the Worldsrdquo; and ldquo; The First Men in the Moonrdquo; rather than his social comedies like this book or ldquo; The History of Mr. Pollyrdquo; don't know what they are missing.ldquo;Love and Mr. Lewishamrdquo; is a comic gem and, in many ways, similar to ldquo;Mr. Pollyrdquo; as it tells the story of a frustrated young man whose ambitious dreams for the future vanish after he falls in love, gets married and then finds himself held back by the responsibilities he has assumed. The sclerotic class structure of late 19th century England, with its caste-like restrictions, makes it almost impossible for him to escape.Wells highlights the rigidity and hypocrisy of the system but does so in a gentle humorous way. I could not help but wonder if P.G. Wodehouse, who first started writing around 1900 when Lewisham was published was influenced by Wells.

Mr. Lewisham is an 18-year-old teacher at a boys' school in Sussex, earning forty pounds a year. He meets and falls in love with Ethel Henderson, who is paying a visit to relatives. His involvement with her causes him to lose his position, but he is unable to find her when he moves to London. After a two-and-one-half-year break in the action, Mr. Lewisham is in his third year of study at the Normal School of Science in South Kensington. He has becomes a socialist, declaring his politics with a red tie, and is an object of interest to Alice Heydinger, an older student. But chance brings him together again with his first love at a seacute;ance. Ethel's stepfather, Mr. Chaffery, is a spiritualist charlatan, and Mr. Lewisham is determined to extricate her from association with his dishonesty. They marry, but Mr. Lewisham is forced to abandon his plans for a brilliant scientific career followed by a political ascent. About the AuthorOften called the father of , British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as , , The Island of Doctor Moreau, and . Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.
