Kids’ fun this Saturday

Puppies will be listening calmly and quietly while children read to them during Tales to Tails on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 11 to noon. The therapy canines are from ROAR (Ridgefield Operation Animal Rescue) and are trained to sit still while the children read. Reading out loud gives children the confidence to read more often and perhaps help them develop reading as a lifelong habit. Children have to be independent readers and need to be registered for the program. There is no charge. Also on Saturday, the brass quintet from the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra will be introducing kids to the sound of “Star Wars” and other celestial delights. The program, for children ages 4 to 10, is from 11 to noon in the Brubeck Room. There is no charge, however registration is required.

Author talks about the “Sound of Music”

One of Hollywood’s most treasured films, “The Sound of Music,” will be discussed by author Tom Santopietro on Sunday, March 1, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Anyone who thrills at the opening sequence with twirling her way through the lush green meadow high in the Austrian Alps will want to hear this author who has written the ultimate fan book, The Sound of Music Story. With all the inside dope from behind-the-scenes stories of the filming in Austria and Hollywood to new interviews with Johannes von Trapp and others, Mr. Santopietro provides a historian’s critical analysis of careers, controversy and the super stardom that greeted Julie Andrews. The US Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2001 as it was deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” Tom Santopietro is the author of Effect, The Importance of Being Barbra, Considering (A New York Times Editor’s Choice) and Sinatra in Hollywood. He has worked for the past twenty years in New York theater as a manager of more than two dozen Broadway shows. He lives in New York. A Q&A and book signing will follow the talk. There is no charge. Registration is highly recommended.

A special story time

In celebration of Read Across America Day, the Children’s Library staff will be reading to kids on Monday, March 2, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The reading selections are six titles from the Caldecott Awards. The five additional titles are Caldecott Honor books – Nana in the City, Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky's Abstract Art, Sam & Dave Dig a Hole, Viva Frida, and The Right Word: Roget and his Thesaurus. Registration is not required – children may just enjoy the pleasure of someone reading to them.

Children ages eight through twelve can start learning about 3D printing with the program, 3D Makers, on Wednesdays in March (March 4, 11, 18 and 25), from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Working with library staff and the 3D printer designated for the Children’s Library, kids will be able to create their own 3D designs using a website and then see them being printed out on the printer. Designs should be no larger than 5 cm and may be picked up on another day if the printing is not completed in the session. Children should register for each session separately on the library’s website.

Magic cards

Teens in grades 7 through 9 now have a place to gather for Magic: The Gathering. On Thursdays in March (March 5, 12, 19 and 26), teens can bring their Magic cards and join others in the wizarding game of chance and skill. No registration is required – kids can just show up with their cards and challenge their friends or meet new ones.
