Cubed Circle Newsletter 192 – Jay Lethal's Big Win, PWG From Out of Nowhere & More! In this week's newsletter we return to discuss not only this week's WWE television programming, RAW and NXT, but also a Ring of Honor pay-per-view from a few weeks ago, a PWG show from the beginning of the year, and Mid-South TV from 1981! – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter Editor Playing Catch-up – Part I: PWG 'From Out of Nowhere' and ROH 'Best in the World' As some readers may know, the first semester holidays began but a couple of weeks ago, meaning that I have approximately two more weeks to catch up on all of the pro-wres I missed both before and during exams. What I hope to do over the following two weeks is publish opinions in each week's newsletter covering, briefly and in general, what I watched that week in terms of newer material. Originally, this was a project meant to get underway last week, but the Tsuruta/Misawa piece that I had a lot of fun writing got in the way of that. This week we will be taking a look at Ring of Honor's 'Best in the World' internet-pay-per-view, as well as PWG's 'From Out of Nowhere'. Ring of Honor: Best in the World June 19th 2015, Terminal 5, New York, New York Ryan Clingman Terms such as "biggest match in the history of [insert company name]" are popular on two platforms, the first being the forever-home of hyperbole, the internet and its forums, and the other WWE's television, which continuously pushes the latest forgettable match as supposedly the "biggest" or "most important" in company history.

Winnipeg, MB, Canada Status: Leader of the Bullet Club. Main allies: The Young Bucks, Adam Cole, Hangman Page, aka members of the Bullet Club. Main enemies: AJ Styles, Michael Elgin. Kenny Omega made his debut under a New Japan contract in 2014. Despite dismissing the idea of joining the villainous foreigner stable Bullet Club at his signing press conference, Omega was revealed as the newest member of the stable, setting his sights on the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. Omega, dubbing himself “The Cleaner”, claimed he had lied at the press conference and was only interested in money and the title. As part of his new villainous persona, Omega, who is fluent in Japanese, stopped talking in Japanese and instead did his interviews in English. In addition to that change, joining the Bullet Club led to Omega adopting the Cleaner nickname, which was intended to be a reference to people who clean up crime scenes. Early in 2015, Omega wrestled his first match as a member of Bullet Club, defeating Ryusuke Taguchi to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship for the first time. In a match no one will ever forget, Omega teamed with Bullet Club leader A.J. Styles to defeat IWGP Intercontinental champion Shinsuke Nakamura and Yoshi-Hashi in a tag team match.

  • Year Ago, Inspired by the Dr. Keith Presents Annuals of 2011 and 2012, We Published
year ago, inspired by the Dr. Keith Presents Annuals of 2011 and 2012, we published the Ainaugural Cubed Circle Yearbook, attempting to encapsulate what was a pivotal year for professional wrestling in 2014. This year we hope to do the same, albeit for a year of a decidedly different sort. 2015 was dissimilar to 2014 in many respects. It didn't see moments as grandiose as the end of the Undertaker's Streak, Daniel Bryan's WrestleMania victory, or the Guerrero-Atlantis mask match. When evaluated from afar 2015 may even appear stagnant in comparison, as did many of the world's largest and most influential promotions during the year – WWE, NJPW, and CMLL in particular. But, upon closer inspection, the seemingly motionless landscape of 2015 wasn't only very much alive, but both morose and vibrant, disheartening and emboldening. The open wrestling fan of 2015 had more choice and freedom than perhaps ever before, with some ardent observers of the industry even abandoning Monday Night RAW for lack of faith in the lumbering weekly juggernaut. Some turned to Lucha Underground, a show that garnered considerable cult popularity. Others looked to alternative facets of the company such as NXT, which grew beyond what many considered its zenith at the end of 2014, harbouring one of the better years for American women's wrestling in decades. AAA showed promise and ambition on several fronts, but was subject to unfortunate, and at times tragic, circumstances. NJPW was as repetitive creatively as it had been under the Kidani administration, but produced one of the best nights of wrestling of the last several years in WrestleKingdom 9 – made more readily available to an American audience than ever before.
