HOLY HOUR September 29 at St. John Cantius at 2:00 p.m. Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone RECONCILIATION should rise from the dead.’” - Lk 16:31 Holy Spirit: Saturday 3:00-3:45 p.m.

Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD. © LPi St. Anthony: Saturday 3:00-4:15 p.m. and 5:45-6:15 p.m. (also Thursday before the 1st Friday of the month at 3:30 p.m.) The Anti-Catholic Letter Last weekend, at least some of you probably received an unsigned letter under your windshield wiper … eight pages of commentary on the alleged errors about Scripture and doctrine falsely taught by the . If you did not receive one, count your blessings.

The anonymous author, who claims to have studied the Bible for 34 years, got one thing right … he predicted that your priest “will renounce and refute this letter’s contents.” I do just that, not to protect any supposed power or advantage – the Catholic Church is hardly an esteemed and influential organization in the eyes of the world these days – but simply out of a philosopher’s commitment to truth. Wild, unfounded claims and willful misinterpretations of the Bible and Catholic teaching, along with hateful repetition of claims refuted hundreds of times over, should not go unanswered.

Scott and Kimberly Hahn, Peter Kreeft, Karl Keating, Jimmy Akin, Robert Barron and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger) are among the reliable sources for understanding how to answer such anti-Catholic literature … not with snark or belittling, but with Scripture, history and grace. Reading the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church brings us to the sources of revelation, not an anonymous writer’s opinions and attacks on the Faith.

If this gentleman really wants to understand how the Church understands Scripture, I refer him to Pope Benedict’s Apostolic Exhortation, Verbum Domini (The Word of God), which is nine years old this week (see http://w2.vatican.va/content/benedict-xvi/en/ apost_exhortations/documents/hf_ben-xvi_exh_20100930_verbum-domini.html for the text). It is full of wisdom and rooted in history. Permit me to share a quote (nn. 30-31) that is a bit long but essential for this question: Among the relevant passages for this writer:

[A] fundamental criterion of biblical interpretation [is that] the primary setting for scriptural interpretation is the life of the Church. This is demanded by the very nature of the Scriptures and the way they gradually came into being. … “[S]ince sacred Scripture must be read and interpreted in the light of the same Spirit through whom it was written”, exegetes, theologians and the whole people of God must approach it as what it really is, the word of God conveyed to us through human words (cf. 1 Th 2:13). This is implicit in the Bible itself: “No prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (2 Pet 1:20-21). Moreover, it is the faith of the Church that recognizes in the Bible the word of God; as Saint Augustine memorably put it: “I would not believe the Gospel, had not the authority of the Catholic Church led me to do so.” The Holy Spirit, who gives life to the Church, enables us to interpret the Scriptures authoritatively. The Bible is the Church’s book, and its essential place in the Church’s life gives rise to its genuine interpretation.

Saint Jerome recalls that we can never read Scripture simply on our own. We come up against too many closed doors and we slip too easily into error. The Bible was written by the People of God for the People of God, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Only in this communion with the People of God can we truly enter as a “we” into the heart of the truth that God himself wishes to convey to us. … An authentic interpretation of the Bible must always be in harmony with the faith of the Catholic Church.

It is unfortunate, but a sign of our times, that the hopeful message of redemption and salvation should become instead an anonymous attack on Catholic faith. I offer these other words of Jesus: “Time will prove where wisdom lies” (Luke 7:35).
