The Development of the Jeremiah Figure: from Destruction to Restoration The Development of the Jeremiah Figure: From Destruction To Restoration by Bo Yeon Briana Lee A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Knox College and the Biblical Department of the Toronto School of Theology In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theology awarded by the University of St. Michael’s College © Copyright by Bo Yeon Briana Lee 2017 The Development of the Jeremiah Figure: From Destruction To Restoration Bo Yeon Briana Lee Doctor of Philosophy University of St. Michael’s College 2017 Abstract Jeremiah scholars agree that what we find in the book of Jeremiah is a literary tradition of Jeremiah that grew over time through the traditioning process of scribal reading, interpreting, composing, redacting and transmitting Jeremiah materials. Hence, they also acknowledge that the textually-presented Jeremiah is not a faithful portrayal of the historical prophet but a literary-theological character developed in keeping with the growth of the tradition. However, there has been little discussion of how Jeremiah’s historical and theological significance was constructed and promoted through the ongoing development and expansion of the Jeremiah tradition across and beyond the Second Temple period. Hence, Jeremiah was often reduced to stereotypical images associated with destruction, suffering and exile. In this dissertation, I consider the Jeremiah tradition, that is, literary traditions tied to the prophet Jeremiah that participated in the continued development of the Jeremiah figure. And I argue that Jeremiah developed as the major prophet of exile and restoration with a strong pro-Jerusalem and pro-Temple Tendenz. Literary evidence shows that Jeremiah and his legacy played an important role in the ongoing Jewish reflections on, and interpretations of, the changing fate of God’s people, city and Temple, and that Jeremiah’s significance for the unfolding fate of Jerusalem and the Temple continued to be acknowledged and affirmed in the ii ongoing Jewish conceptualizations of exile and restoration. Although Jeremiah’s historical association with the destruction and exile was an essential part of the people’s memory and perception of this ancient figure, Jewish authors turned to Jeremiah, not merely to account for their experiences and ideas of ‘exile,’ but also to articulate those of ‘restoration’ centred on the city and Temple of Jerusalem. The expanding traditions of Jeremiah thus testify to Jeremiah’s enduring significance and relevance for the unfolding history of the people paradigmatically understood as the history of exile and restoration. By examining the ways in which the memory and perception of Jeremiah were shaped, reshaped and reinforced over time, we may be able to see that an afterlife of a ‘biblical’ figure is crucial to an understanding of how the tradition associated with that figure became a living tradition and why. iii Acknowledgments I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported me all these years as I pursued this project — especially, my dissertation supervisor, Dr. Judith H. Our Torah portion for this week is Parashat Vayishlach, in which we read about the journeys of our patriarch Jacob and his family after Jacob completes his service for Laban, his father-in-law. G-d commands Jacob to return to the home from which he fled many years before just after stealing his older brother Esau’s birthright as the first-born son of Isaac and Rebecca. Jacob and his family’s return will necessitate at the very least a meeting between Jacob and Esau, if not also a confrontation, since the two brothers had not seen each other since Jacob’s deception of their father robbed Esau of many privileges including the top spot in the family. Understandably, Jacob is afraid to face Esau and his anger. Jacob sends ahead a messenger to Esau to let him know of his return and learns that Esau is coming to meet him, along with 400 men. This exacerbates Jacob’s fear. He divides his family into two camps, with the hope that one will survive should Esau and the men attack. Bravely, Jacob plans to stand in front of his camp to lead them forward, but he doesn’t want to take it on the chin unless he absolutely has to. Before the brothers will meet, Jacob arranges for several messengers to greet Esau and appease him with many generous gifts. Jacob’s planning done for the big reunion ahead, he settles down to sleep for the night. In that sleep, what dreams may come. All night and near into the dawn, Jacob wrestles with a man who may just be an angel.

    751 It is diffi cult to speak about Jeremiah without comparing him to Isaiah. It might be wrong to center everything on the differences between their reactions to God’s call, namely, Isaiah’s enthusiasm (Is 6:8) as opposed to Jeremiah’s fear (Jer 1:6). It might have been only a question of their different temperaments. Their respec- tive vocation and mission should be complementary, both in terms of what refers to their lives and writings and to the infl uence that both of them were going to exercise among believers. Isaiah is the prophecy while Jeremiah is the prophet. The two faces of prophet- ism complement each other and they are both equally necessary to reorient history. Isaiah represents the message to which people will always need to refer in order to reaffi rm their faith. Jeremiah is the ever present example of the suffering of human beings when God bursts into their lives. There is no room, therefore, for a sentimental view of a young, peaceful and defenseless Jeremiah who suffered in silence from the wickedness of his persecu- tors. There were hints of violence in the prophet (11:20-23). In spite of the fact that he passed into history because of his own sufferings, Jeremiah was not always the victim of the calamities that he had announced. In his fi rst announcement, Jeremiah said that God had given him authority to uproot and to destroy, to build and to plant, specifying that the mission that had been entrusted to him encompassed not only his small country but “the nations.” The magnitude to such a task assigned to a man without credentials might surprise us; yet it is where the fi nger of God does appear.

    Notes on Zechariah 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE AND WRITER The title of this book comes from its traditional writer, as is true of all the prophetical books of the Old Testament. The name "Zechariah" (lit. "Yahweh Remembers") was a common one among the Israelites, which identified at least 27 different individuals in the Old Testament, perhaps 30.1 It was an appropriate name for the writer of this book, because it explains that Yahweh remembers His chosen people, and His promises, and will be faithful to them. This Zechariah was the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo (1:1, 7; cf. Ezra 5:1; 6:14; Neh. 12:4, 16). Zechariah, like Jeremiah and Ezekiel, was both a prophet and a priest. He was obviously familiar with priestly things (cf. ch. 3; 6:9-15; 9:8, 15; 14:16, 20, 21). Since he was a young man (Heb. na'ar) when he began prophesying (2:4), he was probably born in Babylonian captivity and returned to Palestine very early in life, in 536 B.C. with Zerubbabel and Joshua. Zechariah apparently survived Joshua, the high priest, since he became the head of his own division of priests in the days of Joiakim, the son of Joshua (Neh. 12:12, 16). Zechariah became a leading priest in the restoration community succeeding his grandfather (or ancestor), Iddo, who also returned from captivity in 536 B.C., as the leader of his priestly family (Neh. 12:4, 16). Zechariah's father, Berechiah (1:1, 7), evidently never became prominent.

The following episodesof the battle against the Midianites contrast Gideon's inadequateresources with his selfish attempt to be honoured for the victory, assignthe victory to YHWH,who remains in control and who thus demonstrateshis divine power, and show that Baal is not presentin the narrative.

THE LETTER OF ARISTEAS The Letter of Aristeas, written to one Philocrates, presents the oldest, as well as most romantic, account of the origin of the Septuagint.1 According to the letter, Aristeas is a person of con­ siderable station in the court of Ptolemy Philadelphus (285-247 B. C.). Ptolemy was sympathetic to the Jews. One day he asked his librarian Demetrius (in the presence of Aristeas, of course) about the progress of the royal library. Demetrius assured the king that more than 200,000 volumes had been catalogued and that he soon hoped to have a half million. He pointed out that there was a gap­ ing lacuna in the legal section and that a copy of the Jewish law would be a welcome addition.     Basil Lourié St Petersburg Russia The Calendar Implied in 2 Baruch and 4 Ezra: Two Modifications of the One Scheme 0. Introduction Both 2 Baruch and 4 Ezra provide series of revelations followed by a 40-day period of teaching (2 Baruch 76:4) or (re)writing of revealed books (4 Ezra 14). The number of days between visions is always explicated, and so, both 2 Baruch and 4 Ezra are interwoven by numerical sequences which can hardly be random or inessential. Their relation to the calendar is rather obvious given that both books are apocalypses, and that the Jewish apocalypses are saturated with liturgical elements, as it is the case of 2 Baruch and 4 Ezra as well. The fact that both 2 Baruch and 4 Ezra contain some calendrical and liturgical contents was clear even to the early students but the first attempt of systematic recovering of their calendrical structures was undertaken in 1959 by Jan Van Goudoever.1 Then, in 1969, Pierre Bogaert published another reconstruction of 2 Baruch‘s calendar as a part of the Introduction to his French translation.2 Since then, no particular attention to the calendars of both apocalypses was paid. Several important liturgical observations were published, however. Van Goudoever and even Bogaert proposed their reconstructions when the studies in the Second Temple period Jewish calendars were in their beginning. No wonder that now there is a need to revisit their conclusions. The detailed reconstruction of the implied calendar(s) is, nevertheless, problematic due to the impossibility of identification of the calendaric data from 2 Baruch and 4 Ezra with any already known Jewish calendar of the Second Temple period.
