February 3, 2011 Joan Wilson, VP-Programs & Workshops Program: Wow!....Ooohhh!.....I Love It!!!...... were just a few of the comments heard during our January two-day workshop with Carol Morrissey. Adding to their quiltmaking toolbox of techniques, we now have a new group of “ piecers,” armed with new Sue Spargo visions and creative thought processes as to how to put an idea into a fabric work of art. Through Carol’s personal attention to each attendee and her ability to interpret what each wanted to accomplish, a new appreciation for how to utilize the designs and color of their fabric helped to bring out even the smallest details in their projects. I can hardly wait to see these beautiful works displayed during an upcoming Bring and Brag. In February prepare to be dazzled by Sue Spargo. Her lecture is “Finding Your Creativity”. Sue is well known internationally for her use of lots of different fabrics from wool to calicos, silk, ultra suede and you name it to develop her vibrant folksy , totes, needle cases, pillows, etc. The author of numerous books, she will be presenting a trunk show and her workshops will be “Greta” needle case and “Red “Finding Your Clover” wall hanging. The workshops will offer opportunities to combine and layer fabrics along with various handwork techniques to embellish your projects. We have Creativity” patterns for both workshops available for those who sign-up. You can also purchase kits on her website, but they are not required. Your supply lists tell you what you need NEXT to bring if you want to work from your stash. Supply lists for the February workshop are on our website. Valerie Hubbard, the immediate past Show Chairman, as well as a former Honors Membership Vice President, was honored as the Founder’s Award recipient. This award honors someone who has been a member of the Guild for at least five years and who has continued, throughout their membership, to further the mission and goals of the Guild. Chris Becker, Marcia Wood, and Pam Hansen were honored as Silver Thimble Award recipients. This award honors those who have been members of the Guild for at least three years and who have gone above and beyond in their volunteer duties. Chris currently serves as the Guild Treasurer. She keeps track of all the budget line items, and makes sure that our bills are paid on a timely basis. Marcia is a past Membership VP and current Community Service VP. You’ve seen her introducing her students in the UTD “Aging Brain” study. Pam is both a past Community Service and Membership VP. Silver Thimble Honorees All three have helped out on many committees, and are regulars at the monthly Chris Becker (left) “Covers for Kids” workshops. and Marla also announced a new recipient of the Red Rose Award. This award was Marcia Wood (right) created by the Executive Board a few years ago as a new means to honor volunteers. Those qualified to receive it would have received a Yellow Rose Award at least five years prior to the presentation of the Red Rose Award, and continue to be an active, contributing member of our Guild. QGD Online editor, Judy Kriehn, is only the third person to receive the honor. Marla’s comment at the presentation was “...she’s already won everything else.”

In just two (2) months we will be admiring beautiful quilts, and lots of things the 2011 Show 147 vendors will have to temp us with. Yes, it is just two months away. Now is the time for you to volunteer to help with Quilt Celebration 2011. Committee As I mentioned at the January Guild meeting, when we ask each April how many people volunteered for the show – less than half of the persons present raise their Update hands. I am always surprised by that, and wonder why those that didn’t volunteer Carol Dickschat missed the fun. Vice President, Show Yes, it is work, but it is fun also. It is a chance to get to know other guild members, and make new friends. The last few years, the volunteer coordinators have not been able to fill spaces for all of the places where help is needed. There are many “jobs” that can be done while sitting, and others that don’t require much standing or walking. There are many openings to sign up for and I hope you will consider doing so. You can volunteer for as little as 2 hours, 4 hours or all day if you wish. It really does take everyone to make this show a success and I appreciate everyone who has volunteered. Your show committee is ordering equipment, and signs in preparation for the show. The printed materials committee is busy contacting vendors for advertisements for the show program, and lots of other committee members are getting those last minute things ready. See you at Quilt Celebration 2011 Friday, March 11th thru Sunday, March 13th.

Her lecture will be “Where I Started and Challenges Along the Way” and will include a trunk show (no slides) of her beautiful quilts. In April, we will NOT be meeting at Shearith Israel. QGD Online - January 2011 page 7 What was once a two-story, 16,564 square-foot storefront building designed and built during the 1970s is now the Kilgore Law Center - a building that is a unique work of art on the canvas of an Uptown neighborhood. The building’s artistic style - known as MADI - is appropriate for the new Kilgore Law Center, located at 3109 Carlisle, which is also home to the first MADI Museum and Gallery. This is the first time that MADI has been used in the U.S. as an architectural form on this scale. Long-time Guild member, Ruth Anderson, reports that quilters may be fascinated by the art on display at the Dallas MADI museum, as it features strong geometric shapes. The MADI Museum is located at the intersection of Carlisle and Bowen, in the Uptown/Oak Lawn area. Need Some Inspiration?

QGD Online - January 2011 page 9 At the January Guild Meeting, Jane Family Collins, a Family Outreach employee, and Ann Sharber, a member of the Board of Outreach: the Directors, thanked guild members for choosing the Family Outreach, Inc. Mini-Quilt as the beneficiary for the annual auction. To illustrate the impact that funds raised Auction by our auction can make, Jane shared Beneficiary stories about a few of the young teen age Bonnie McElearney, mothers currently served by the program. Co-chair, Mini Auction One of her stories was about Juanita and her daughter, pictured here. Juanita works full time and is in a program to earn her GED.
