VILNIUS, MAY 18th 2010 CHARLEY DIETVORST MANAGING DIRECTOR INTERPORTO REGIONALE DELLA PUGLIA Apulia is a 19,362 sq kms region, surrounded by the in the northeast and by the Ionian Sea in the south. It develops about 800km of coastline and is divided into six provinces: Foggia, – the largest as for population with the regional capital – Brindisi, , Lecce and the Bat (, , ).

The value added structure includes a higher than national average number of service industries and with an incidence of agriculture that is almost double the Italian figure. Exports are mainly concentrated in traditional sectors (leathers and hides, and other manufacturing industries), steelmaking and agricultural products.

As far as infrastructures are concerned, Apulia has a slight advantage compared to the rest of the South . Economic infrastructures do indicate a better situation than the Italian average for the rail network and for port facilities. The main highway is the last stretch of the Adriatic autostrada. Railway connections are based principally on the --Bari-Lecce and -Bari line.

Port facilities exist at Taranto, as well as Brindisi and Bari, which have important links with ex Yugoslavia and . The two domestic and international airports are Bari-Palese and Brindisi-Casale.

THE APULIA REGION

In 2007, Bari is the province of , except , which more contributes to the income produced in Italy (1.91% corresponding to the 9th place national score).* The presence of some export oriented companies contributes significantly at high value of exports made by the province in 2007, equivalent to about 3.21 billion euros for Bari Province which guarantee the 33-th position in the national ranking. The turnover with the export is very positive and warrants to the province, a good performance of the trade balance: the value of imports of almost 2.98 billion euro (31-th place among the 103 provinces ) ensures a positive balance of about 227 billion euros. The main markets for exports are Europe and America. Similarly, imports come mainly from Europe and America. More specifically, the ranking of countries to which are most numerous exports is led by Germany, United Kingdom and France. To mention too countries like Albania and the United States who occupy important positions. The main import countries are Switzerland, Germany, followed by France. China value is significant for the high volume of imports. Manufacturing industry in general and more specifically the furniture one accounts for a substantial total exports followed by agricultural products and pharmaceuticals. Many foreign companies have chosen Bari area for their factories like Bosch and Getrag.

Province of Bari has an high ranking among the South Italy ones for the infrastrucural endowemeent. High standard highways and roads, rail connection, port and airport facilities, broadband connections, guarantee the best conditions to set a new factory or logistic platform in this area.

The Interporto Regionale della Puglia is one of the most innovative intermodal systems in Southern Italy. The interporto area is about 45 hectares of which 90.000 sqm. is designated for warehousing and office space.

Because of its strategic position, the Interporto Regionale della Puglia can be considered as the only logistics infrastructure in the eastern Mediterranean area capable of handling traffic to and from the Balkans, particularly in relation to the implementation of the European Corridor VIII Bari- Varna. The Interporto Regionale della Puglia is a member of both UIR (Interportos italian Association) and Europlatform.

The Interporto intermodal terminal comprises of 4 tracks, used to organize trains to transport all types of containers, swap bodies and semi-trailers on national and international routes. The terminal also offers a storage area for containers and other facilities (groupage, maintenance, etc).
