NEWSLETTER 22 JULY 2009

Dear Parents

Welcome back to school and the commencement of Term Three. Winter is always a good time for indulging in all the indoor activities and games which bring families together, making puzzles, participating in board games like Scrabble and Thirty Seconds as well as hours of wonderful reading time. The child who is addicted to reading, what used to be called a “bookworm”, is always at a distinct advantage academically and socially. To encourage the love of books and reading in your children is to offer them lifelong companionship and intellectual growth. After the rest and relaxation of holidays, the children should be refreshed and energized, ready to tackle the challenges of a new term with determination and focus. We extend a warm welcome to our two new educators who are with us on short-term contracts of six months - Mrs Michelle Potterton in Grade Three and Mrs Sharon Alexander, Grade Five, while Mrs Mozley is on maternity leave. We trust that their sojourn at Bergvliet Primary will be happy and rewarding.

Updating of Contact Numbers

In order to maintain the most up-to-date record of all parents’ contact telephone and cellular phone numbers, both home and office, we request that the reply slip at the end of this newsletter is completed and returned to school as soon as possible. It is of paramount importance that the school office is always in possession of the valid and accessible contact numbers of both parents, where applicable, and we would be most grateful if parents would furnish us with any changes to their address(es) and contact numbers as and when they occur.

Choir Matters

Our hardworking choirs were awarded two very special trophies at the recent Eisteddfod. The Junior Choir received the Elsie Jennings trophy for the Best Kindergarten Choir and the Senior Choir were presented with the Ernest Laughton cup for Best Mixed Voice Choir. The results of the Childrens’ Choir auditions are still awaited. The Wynberg Boys’ High School Choir Festival takes place on Thursday, 23 July at 19.00 and should you wish to attend this evening of musical appreciation, tickets will be available at the door at a cost of R25,00 each. On Wednesday, 12 August 2009 the choir will participate at the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod at Zwaanswyk Primary School. Choir members are reminded that as this will take place during the afternoon they will have to excuse themselves from any sporting fixtures or practices on that afternoon.

ADDENDUM TO NEWSLETTER DATED 22 JULY 2009

It is with much sadness that Bergvliet Primary School learned of the death of Mr Paul Baerecke on Sunday, 12 July 2009. Mr Baerecke commenced his teaching career in 1966 at BPS and some 43 years later in 2009, he completed that career at the end of Term One, back at this school. During the intervening years he had served as Deputy Principal at Primary School, and as Principal at Primary, Primary and at Primary Schools. Mr Baerecke was a well respected educator of great dedication and commitment and he left a legacy of caring concern for his pupils and good, solid family values at each school which had the privilege of his presence on their staff. As our Technology teacher at BPS, Mr Baerecke was most innovative and creative in the projects which he designed and assigned for the learners from Grades Five to Seven. His cheerful, positive presence will be greatly missed in the Staffroom and the classroom, but we are comforted by the knowledge that many children have benefitted over the years from his expertise and that he will indeed be remembered with deep appreciation and affection.
