It feels like we're working up to something good. Not that volume 3 isn't pretty fantastic on its own, but there's just this feeling that Bendis is about to pull the curtain back for the big reveal soon. Ok, so in 10 Jessica pulls one over on J. Jonah Jameson after he hires her to find out Spider-man's identity. That issue is written in script form with pretty watercolor art and was well worth the read. Also, the story plays into what happens in the main storyline of this volume. I loved the way It feels like we're working up to something good. I've gotten confused over this in the past, and I can't imagine that I'm Jessica Jones: Alias Volume 3 only one. And using that confusion to introduce the two characters was just perfect, in my opinion. Anyway, this was a mini welcome to the SpiderVerse kind of arc, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you aren't acquainted with the plethora of web-slingers out there, all of these ladies might seem a bit weird, but you don't really have to have a lot of prior knowledge to get the gist of the story because even Jessica Jones is a Jessica Jones: Alias Volume 3 bewildered. Check this one out if you get the Jessica Jones: Alias Volume 3. Good stuff! View all 3 comments. Jun 22, Kemper rated it really liked it Shelves:detectivescrime-mysterycomicssuperheromarvel. Not just the Netflix ones either. Alias continues to stand out as being a part of the Marvel universe, but also apart from it. Jessica keeps getting sucked into superhero business despite her best efforts to stay away from cases involving people in tights, and her position on the fringes gives us a new angle to look at all of stories that usually fall through the cracks. I particularly liked the first issue in which the entire story of JJJ hiring Jessica and what happens afterwards is told in a unique way. A couple of larger panels are on each page and instead of dialogue balloons or captions the dialogue is in a type face font placed at the edges. View all 5 comments. It's just a shame that the kid had to be Jessica Jones: Alias Volume 3 a damsel for so much of the story, not that Jessica ain't a hell of a good knight, of course. Some characters like to be out there and be free to understand, but not Jessica. No, no. Not her. Can't believe she poo-poo'd on She-Hulk, J. Can't believe she poo-poo'd on She-Hulk, though. The temerity! View 2 comments. Without a doubt, the best volume so far. And it's glorious. I read it two days ago and I'm still laughing. One of the single best issues of anything I've ever read. Even if the rest of the book sucked, I'd probably still give the whole four stars on the strength of that one single issue. But the rest of the book does not in any way, shape, or form suck. It's abou Without a doubt, the best volume so far. And you don't have to be attached to her, or even know she existed, to get caught up in her story. I didn't. And I still found myself every bit as concerned for her as Jessica. As well I should have been, because what's happened Jessica Jones: Alias Volume 3 her is truly horrible. Yes, it's something that could only happen to a super in a super world, but Bendis wrote it with the proper parallels to what could happen to a young girl in the real world to give it a real world punch. I suspect Bendis will answer them, but I almost wouldn't mind if he didn't. That nagging creepiness wouldn't be a bad thing to carry away from Alias. I also want to say how much I like Scott Lang in this book. And I like him with Jessica. He's a cool guy, very compatible with her, and their relationship, while not without stumbling points, is very Jessica Jones: Alias Volume 3 between two people who like and respect each other. • Serial Historiography: Literature, Narrative History, and the Anxiety of Truth
SERIAL HISTORIOGRAPHY: LITERATURE, NARRATIVE HISTORY, AND THE ANXIETY OF TRUTH James Benjamin Bolling A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Minrose Gwin Jennifer Ho Megan Matchinske John McGowan Timothy Marr ©2016 James Benjamin Bolling ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Ben Bolling: Serial Historiography: Literature, Narrative History, and the Anxiety of Truth (Under the direction of Megan Matchinske) Dismissing history’s truths, Hayden White provocatively asserts that there is an “inexpugnable relativity” in every representation of the past. In the current dialogue between literary scholars and historical empiricists, postmodern theorists assert that narrative is enclosed, moribund, and impermeable to the fluid demands of history. My critical intervention frames history as a recursive, performative process through historical and critical analysis of the narrative function of seriality. Seriality, through the material distribution of texts in discrete components, gives rise to a constellation of entimed narrative strategies that provide a template for human experience. I argue that serial form is both fundamental to the project of history and intrinsically subjective. Rather than foreclosing the historiographic relevance of storytelling, my reading of serials from comic books to the fiction of William Faulkner foregrounds the possibilities of narrative to remain open, contingent, and responsive to the potential fortuities of historiography. In the post-9/11 literary and historical landscape, conceiving historiography as a serialized, performative enterprise controverts prevailing models of hermeneutic suspicion that dominate both literary and historiographic skepticism of narrative truth claims and revives an ethics responsive to the raucous demands of the past.

The Empowering Squirrel Girl Jayme Horne Submitted for History of Art 390 Feminism and History of Art Professor Ellen Shortell Massachusetts College of Art and Design All the strength of a squirrel multiplied to the size of a girl? That must be the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (fig. 1)! This paper will explore Marvel’s Squirrel Girl character, from her introduction as a joke character to her 2015 The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic series which is being harold as being extremely empowering. This paper aims to understand why a hero like Squirrel Girl would be harold and celebrated by fans, while other female heroes with feminist qualities like Captain Marvel or the New Almighty Thor might be receiving not as much praise. Squirrel Girl was created by Will Murray and artist Steve Ditko. Despite both of them having both worked for Marvel and DC, and having written stories about fan favorites like Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, and others, they are most known for creating Squirrel Girl, also known as Doreen Green. Her powers include superhuman strength, a furry, prehensile tail (roughly 3-4 feet long), squirrel-like buck teeth, squirrel-like retractable knuckle claws, as well as being able to communicate with squirrels and summon a squirrel army. She was first introduced in 1991, where she ambushed Iron Man in attempt to impress him and convince him to make her an Avenger. That’s when they were attacked one of Marvel’s most infamous and deadly villains, Doctor Doom. After Doctor Doom has defeated Iron Man, Squirrel Girl jumps in with her squirrel army and saves Iron Man1 (fig.

Told after the fact, the story focuses on the why's and the how's, as the Red Team takes it upon themselves to take down select individuals to make the world better. Really enjoyed this book. It spawned a sequel, For a Few Troubles More, a broad Belfast-based comedy featuring two supporting characters from Troubled Souls, Dougie and Ivor, who would later get their own American comics series, Dicks, from Caliber in , and several follow-ups from Avatar. Took you long enough, Garth! CARNIVAL’S DANCE OF DEATH: FESTIVITIY IN THE REVENGE PLAYS OF KYD, SHAKESPEARE, AND MIDDLETON by BENJAMIN ROLLINS Under the Direction of Paul Voss ABSTRACT Through four hundred years of accumulated disparaging comments from critics, revenge plays have lost much of the original luster they possessed in early modern England. Surprisingly, scholarship on revenge tragedy has invented an unfavorable lens for understanding this genre, and this lens has been relentlessly parroted for decades. The all-too-familiar generic approach that calls for revenge plays to exhibit a recurring set of concerns, including a revenge motive, a hesitation for the protagonist, and the revenger’s feigned or actual madness, imply that these plays lack philosophical depth, as the appellation of revenge tends to evoke the trite commonalities which we have created for the genre. This dissertation aims to rectify the provincial views concerning revenge tragedies by providing a more complex, multivalent critical model that makes contemporary outmoded approaches to this genre.

Marvel's 'Luke Cage': The Art of Recording Sound in the Chaotic Marvel Universe In Marvel's world of action and fighting, how do you capture sound? When Marvel announced it was expanding its universe to Netflix with a four-part series featuring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist ending in an eight episode mini-series, The Defenders, there wasn’t much chatter among fanboys. Even when Netflix released the Daredevil teaser in 2015, fans were mum—but with good reason. ABC’s now- debunked Agent Carter was airing, Avengers: Age of Ultron saw daily plot reveals, and the latest trailer for Ant-Man dropped, delivering more intrigue to the macro-sized hero played by Paul Rudd. But overshadowing it all was news that Sony was bringing Spider- Man into the Marvel world, which we witnessed in Captain America: Civil War. What was then lost in the shuffle is now an unprecedented success for Netflix: Daredevil is one of its most-watched original series, Jessica Jones will see a second season, and the streaming service has announced a fifth hero in the fold, Punisher. Netflix is hoping Luke Cage, premiering today, packs the same powerful punch. No Film School reached out to production sound mixer Joshua Anderson, CAS, to discuss how he captured the chaotic sounds of Hell's Kitchen. "I imagine that when he takes a punch, he not only feels the physical power, but also feels the sound of the punch." No Film School: You’ve been the production mixer on each of the Marvel series on Netflix – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and now Luke Cage.

At the core lies a unique design- centered production model that has allowed Marvel to radically diversify its motion pictures—a diversity of talent, genre, and style—even as they maintain production and narrative continuity. We will emphasize the roles of key creative workers—not just producing and directing, but screenwriting, production and costume design, sound, score, and music, performance, cinematography, marketing, and so on. Although the MCU is the heart of the course, we will also be examining alternative comic adaptation practices. We’ll look at pre–MCU Marvel films (Spider-Man, Blade), Marvel properties outside the MCU (X-Men, Deadpool), and DC (The Dark Knight).

Comic books have rarely been treated as a serious art form or cultural phenomenon. It used to be that creating a comic book would be considered shameful or something done only as side work. Beginning in the 1990s, some comic creators were able to leverage enough cultural capital to influence more media. In the post-9/11 world, generic elements of superheroes began to resonate with audiences; superheroes fight against injustices and are able to confront the evils in today’s America. This has created a billion dollar, Oscar-award-winning industry of superhero movies, as well as allowed created comic book careers for artists and writers.
