Urban Planning in the Greek Colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia (8th – 6th centuries BCE) An honors thesis for the Department of Classics Olivia E. Hayden Tufts University, 2013 Abstract: Although ancient Greeks were traversing the western Mediterranean as early as the Mycenaean Period, the end of the “Dark Age” saw a surge of Greek colonial activity throughout the Mediterranean. Contemporary cities of the Greek homeland were in the process of growing from small, irregularly planned settlements into organized urban spaces. By contrast, the colonies founded overseas in the 8th and 6th centuries BCE lacked any pre-existing structures or spatial organization, allowing the inhabitants to closely approximate their conceptual ideals. For this reason the Greek colonies in Sicily and Magna Graecia, known for their extensive use of gridded urban planning, exemplified the overarching trajectory of urban planning in this period. Over the course of the 8th to 6th centuries BCE the Greek cities in Sicily and Magna Graecia developed many common features, including the zoning of domestic, religious, and political space and the implementation of a gridded street plan in the domestic sector. Each city, however, had its own peculiarities and experimental design elements. I will argue that the interplay between standardization and idiosyncrasy in each city developed as a result of vying for recognition within this tight-knit network of affluent Sicilian and South Italian cities. From Easter to Pentecost and Beyond: A Church-Wide Study in the Book of Acts Clarkesville First United Methodist Church April 8 — May 12, 2020 Brian Shelton, Teacher Week 3 Gospel to the Gentiles Acts 13-18:22 Wednesday, April 22 Introduction In our study of the early church in Acts, the gospel has continually come to the Jews and has been introduced to God-fearers—gentiles who worship the Jewish God. Now, in full force this week, we see the gospel coming to gentiles. Paul, along with Barnabas and Silas, continue to go preach in synagogues of the cities where they land. While some Jews see that Jesus is their Messiah and believe in the gospel, just as many seem to be angered by such preaching. In a pattern, Paul is rejected in the synagogue of the city so he takes the message freely to gentiles in that locale. Watch for this pattern. Persecution against him begins for what is perceived as blasphemy. The cities on these journeys can run together, so two maps are provided; your bible might hold similar maps. Note that references to Asia Minor or Anatolia refer to the land mass that is the modern country of Turkey. At the same time, many Jewish Christians believe strongly that all gentile converts have to be circumcised, symbolic of their belief that gentile Christians must practice Judaism as Christians. The most rigid are called Judaizers, and Paul specifically addresses their legalism in the book of Galatians. Watch for this tension in Paul’s missionary ministries. The Jerusalem Council comprised of apostles and elders will settle this for early Christianity in chapter 15, as they realized and declared that the gospel is free of external requirements, legal qualification, or additional steps beyond believing in the work of the cross. -

FOCUS Stephen S. Wise and the Urban Frontier: American Jewish Life in New York and the Pacific Northwest at the Dawn of the 20th Century by Mark A. Raider Abstract The case of Stephen S. Wise provides a lens through which to examine American Jewry’s transformation at the dawn of the 20th century. Not only were New York City and Portland, Oregon – places Wise called home – two geographic poles of America’s urban frontier, they also highlight a spectrum of possibilities available to the New World’s fledgling Jewish community. Viewed in tandem, they illustrate American society’s raw, open, and pliable terrain as it emerged from a rural pre- industrial past. Moreover, by placing Wise in the context of the metropolitan growth that reshaped the Atlantic and Pacific frontiers in the late 19th century, we gain a better understanding of the relationship between the country’s dynamic environmental conditions and the phenomenon of Jewish immigrant absorption, acculturation, and Americanization. In withdrawing to the wilderness, Wise exposed himself to new possibilities for thinking about the place of Jews in American society and the future of American Judaism. He also honed the role of which he was to become a superlative exemplar – a 20th-century American rabbi at home in the worlds of religion and politics. Furthermore, his synthesis of liberal Judaism, American pluralism, Zionism, and Progressive-era notions of social justice anticipated the rise of a new American Jewish sensibility that would become normative in the 20th century.1 Stephen S. Wise was arguably one of the two or three most important American Jewish leaders of the 20th century.
