THE LEGEND OF KORRA "The Brightest Shade" Written by Chase Beckwith 222 Giotto Irvine, CA 92614 (949) 291-4677 [email protected] The Legend of Korra: "The Brightest Shade" 1 TEASER FADE IN: EXT. REPUBLIC CITY - ESTABLISHING - NIGHT A thunderstorm looms over a Republic City hospital. INT. COMATOSE PATIENT’S ROOM - CONTINUOUS A patient lies in her bed by a steampunk-esque ventilator and a table with get well cards and dried up flowers. INT. BREAK ROOM - CONTINUOUS Two ENERGY HEALERS and a SPIRIT DOCTOR in the adjacent room are huddled around a radio listening to a Pro-bending match. RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) We’re just moments away from the last round of the Pro-Bending Finals, ladies and gentlemen. INT. COMATOSE PATIENT’S ROOM - CONTINUOUS The patient sleeps quietly, thirtyish with short brown hair. RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) And we’re underway! Her eyes twitch at the buzzer as a magnetic wave bursts out. INT. BREAK ROOM - CONTINUOUS The table has cash and coins stacked around a radio. RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) Red opens up with an earth-water combo, kncoking two of them back a zone. Blue’s mounting a counter but, it fails, losing two players. INT. COMATOSE PATIENT’S ROOM - CONTINUOUS A silhouette is seen over her during a lightning flash. RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) Three on one, now. Blue’s only hope lies in the hands of their team captain... a tough first night back after a career ending injury years ago. But if bending’s proved anything, it’s that miracles can happen, ladies and gentlemen. The Legend of Korra: "The Brightest Shade" 2 A portrait reveals HO TUN and PENGA with a younger patient in graduation robes at the Beifong Metalbending Academy. RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) Red team’s relentless but Blue’s last player is hanging in there. What’s this?! She just knocked one, no two, players back a zone. INT. BREAK ROOM - CONTINUOUS Metal on the table jolts, but everyone’s jumping in ovation. RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) All of Red’s pushed back to zone 3! A healer tries to leave but the doctor slams the desk. SVROM! The patient’s eyes open, light grey/bloodshot, as another wave bursts. The coins orbit the radio into a ball, rattling. RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) And, what’s this?! The coins orbit into a ball on it, rattling with tension. A lightning bolt rips through the wall, hitting the ball of coins. The magnetic charge reverses, repelling them out from the radio - blood sprays as coins and bodies hit the ground. INT. COMATOSE PATIENT’S ROOM - CONTINUOUS A giant hole is in the room, revealing a charred, empty bed. RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) What an amazing turn of events! I don’t know how in the hell they’ve done it, but they beat the odds and won a second chance at the title! A picture lands on the edge of the table. It’s charred but reveals the words “Love, Grandma Penga and Grandpa Tun” RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) Tonight they played like they were making up for lost time, but will it be enough to get back what was once theirs? Will their resolve be hardened from such a painfully long layoff, or will time once again cheat them out of victory? FADE TO WHITE TITLE SCREEN: “BOOK TWO: SPIRITS - CHAPTER 15: THE BRIGHTEST SHADE” The Legend of Korra: "The Brightest Shade" 3 ACT ONE EXT. AIR TEMPLE ISLAND - MORNING FROM THE BLACK THWACK! Wood rips apart from a sharp blast of wind. KORRA lowers her leg, dodging a metal cable whipping at her. She earthbends a “booster” jump, flying several feet in the air - the cable pierces the raised chunk of earth. She lands on the cable, sprinting along it, soccer kicking the wooden training dummy’s head off with an air blast. WIDER: The dummies ride along a matrix of rails, carefully circling and engaging her. Korra knocks one back as a gust of wind blows its perpendicular arms/sails back at her. MEELO is airbend blowing at the dummy. Drool is flying out of his mouth as he concentrates. Korra is evading but is yanked down by a cable when IKKI is revealed, airbending from her own side. She moves her hands around, spinning the dummy/dragging Korra in. Korra freezes the cable before heel-kicking/shattering it Ikki builds up an air ball as we reveal her sister, JINORA, doing the same opposite to her. Both sisters release their wind balls, exploding against the dummies’ sails, launching them at Korra. Korra holds her hands over the tracks, concentrating - after a beat, she stomps the ground, twisting the rails up. The dummies fly off, crashing into each other. TENZIN is blowing, his face red with strain, at a small patch of grass that has caught on fire. Korra walks past him, earthbend-stomping it out. TENZIN It will come eventually, Korra. KORRA I don’t even know why I’m trying to learn this... the only metalbenders are cops, anyway. None of the other Avatars knew how so I don’t see why I should be the first to have to bend something that obviously isn’t broken. The Legend of Korra: "The Brightest Shade" 4 TENZIN It’s true, none were known to be metalbenders, let alone masters of it. But times have changed, and you’ll need every edge you can get the next time you encounter VAATU. KORRA Well, the entire police force is metalbenders, so I think Republic City’s got that base covered. LIN BEIFONG (O.S.) Oh, we do. No one’s asking you to learn to metalbend - just to be able to defend against it at least. Lin Beifong’s next to Tenzin. LIN BEIFONG We need you because if this guy really is a metalbender, then there’s nothing stopping them from exploiting our weapons systems. KORRA Well I have defended against it, if you haven’t forgotten about my first day in the city... and that was before I could even airbend, so I think I’m fine with my chances. She starts walking up the steps away from them. LIN BEIFONG They were just beat cops. You haven’t dealt with any real metalbending yet. KORRA That’s right... I haven’t. So if you do ever see some “real” stuff, let me know. But until then... (waves goodbye) Wind blows as she walks back towards the temple. She turns around as a large shadow passes overhead, revealing a metalbending police airship. A cable drops. SAIKHAN descends. SAIKHAN Sorry to interrupt you on your day off, Chief. The Legend of Korra: "The Brightest Shade" 5 LIN BEIFONG You’ll get over it. What is it? SAIKHAN There was an explosion at the hospital last night. There’s only one survivor, but he’s saying it was a metalbender. LIN BEIFONG That can’t be... the only metalbenders are police. SAIKHAN Looks like that’s no longer the case. But here’s the kicker: the Earth Kingdom’s trying to claim our crime scene. LIN BEIFONG What?! Haven’t you sent anyone. SAIKHAN MAKO went in earlier, but that’s... another kicker. He’s been M.I.A. LIN BEIFONG Alright, well let’s go then. They grab their cables, ready to ride up. She looks at Korra. LIN BEIFONG So are you coming for this or not? KORRA I think... I’ll sit this one out. LIN BEIFONG ...Alright. (ascends up) TENZIN You made the right choice, Korra. Metalbending is no joke. Korra looks away, thinking. A couple of old air acolytes wrap up the cables/sweep up debris from her session. The airship departs the island as the acolyte’s trash pile is blown up all over him again. He drops his broom/face-palms. INT. REPUBLIC HOSPITAL BOTTOM FLOOR - LATER FRONT DESK CLERK’S POV: A RCPD badge fills the frame. It lowers, revealing an impatient looking Lin Beifong. The Legend of Korra: "The Brightest Shade" 6 LIN BEIFONG RCPD. Where’s the crime scene? FRONT DESK CLERK I’m really sorry, mam, but I’ve been instructed to not let anyone else up there. LIN BEIFONG By whom? FRONT DESK CLERK A detective from the Earth Kingdom showed up a few hours ago and said that it was their crime scene. LIN BEIFONG They what?! Lin Beifong is shocked/horrified at the sight of caution tape at the elevator, reading “EKPD CRIME SCENE.” INT. BREAK ROOM - MOMENTS LATER SCHMACK. Doors fly open through tape, revealing Lin Beifong. The room’s shredded by the explosion of coins. She closes her eyes and stomps the floor using her seismic sense. DETECTIVE PLATNA You’re lucky no one was in here when the lightning struck. (flashing badge) DETECTIVE PLATNA, EKPD. LIN BEIFONG Thanks for visiting, but you can tell your chief that Republic City has its own police department. DETECTIVE PLATNA Not for this. The surviving witness is an EK citizen working here on call. Facts you’d know if you’d sent someone to see him already. LIN BEIFONG I did... someone that was last seen entering this building. DETECTIVE PLATNA Well, it looks like you have much more pressing matters to attend to then, Chief. The Legend of Korra: "The Brightest Shade" 7 LIN BEIFONG I do. I’ll start with this floor. DETECTIVE PLATNA This now falls under EK jurisdiction. We don’t need other agencies trashing my crime scene. An EKPD cop comes in, ready to escort her out. LIN BEIFONG I’m missing a detective and you’re crying about evidence?! The council will file an injunction.
