The two cities are connected by a modern bridge crossing the São Francisco River. Together they form the metropolitan region of Petrolina-Juazeiro, an urban conglomerate of close to 500,000 inhabitants.

Like its sister city Petrolina, Juazeiro has experienced great growth in the last decade due to the irrigation of the semi-arid soils with water from the São Francisco River. Fruit cultivation is important to such an extent that Juazeiro entitles itself "Capital of Irrigated Fruit", which is exported between the Petrolina Airport to USA and/or Europe. For more detailed information on the development of this fertile valley see the article on Petrolina. Main agricultural products in planted area: bananas, mango, sugarcane and grapes

Bridge from Juazeiro to Petrolina

Petrolina is situated on the left bank of the São Francisco River across from its twin city of Juazeiro, Bahia. The two cities, making up an urban area of almost 520.000 people, are connected by a modern bridge. Sobradinho Dam, enclosing Sobradinho Reservoir, the 12th largest reservoir (artificial lake) in the world, is located 26 kilometers upriver.

The Sobradinho Reservoir Lago de Sobradinho is a large reservoir located in Sobradinho, north of the Brazilian state of Bahia. The reservoir measures approximately 320 km (200 mi) long, 4,214 km2 in surface area, and a storage capacity of 34.1 km3 (8.2 cu mi) at its nominal elevation of 392.5 m , making it the 15th largest reservoir (artificial lake) in the world. The lake encloses the waters of the São Francisco River, one of the largest and most important rivers in Brazil.

The reservoir, which represents 60.4% of the hydroelectric power resources of the Northeast of Brazil, has conditions to guarantee the power supply for the region for two years but its water level is highly variable. In some drought years the energy supply is threatened.

The main economic activities in Petrolina are based in the irrigated agriculture, related industry and commerce. Main crops in Tons (2007) Mangos - 146,000 , Grapes 112,200, Guava 67,760 , Banana 45,000 and Coconut 36,400.00

The São Francisco River or Rio São Francisco is a river in Brazil. With a length of 2,914 kilometres, it is the longest river that runs entirely in Brazilian territory, and the fourth longest in South America and overall in Brazil (after the Amazon, the Paraná and the Madeira).

The Vale do São Francisco is a river valley in the state of Bahia, eastern Brazil. The most remarkable thing about the valley as a wine region is its equatorial latitude, just 9°S. This places it only 1000 kilometres south of the Equator, and 2400km north of Brazil's core winelands in Rio Grande do Sul. The climate here is classified as semi- arid tropical. It is hot and dry, with just 600 millimetres of rain per year.

The grapes grown in this tropical environment are rarely, if ever, of fine- wine quality. But what they lack in quality they make up for in quantity; many vineyards here produce two annual vintages rather than one.

The Carnaúba Farm is a national reference in genetics of goats, sheep and cattle. The 960- hectare property has high levels of productivity and technical competence in the creation of native breeds of goats, sheep and cattle, both milk and beef.

At the beginning of the goat breeding there were less than 150 animals. Today, an average of 2,300 goats are a reference because they have managed to reach the zero-mortality rate, thus increasing their efficiency.

Leaves of the Prickly Pear, called Palma in Brazil used as fodder. It is a very important fodder supplement.

Another way of increasing the finances is the production of goat cheese. The challenge for the production and marketing of cheeses at the Carnaúba farm is faced by Joaquim and Inês Dantas, who continue the work of their predecessors, the engineer Manoel Dantas Vilar Filho, known as Manelito, and the writer Ariano Suassuna (1927-2014) . Ariano was the one who baptized the cheeses of the pioneer dairy in the production of goat cheeses in the Northeast, a production that began still in 1979. Laticínio ( Dairy) Grupiara's family investment, surpassing all expectations, has the capacity to produce 1,500 liters of goat's milk per day, resulting in 180 kilos of cheese, equivalent to 800 pieces.

The sons, Dantinhas, Daniel and Carolina, also help in the administration of the farm, which has been in the family's possession since the 18th century.

The region of Cariri Paraibano is characterized by the beautiful rocky landscapes, located in the middle of the small forest, called caatinga shrub. The main attraction of the region is the impressive Lajeado do Pai Mateus, scene of several films.

There are also the most beautiful granite slabs in the world, adorned by huge rounded blocks of this rock and small lakes, where countless fossils of prehistoric animals such as mastodons and giant sloths are found. Its positive energy does not go unnoticed by visitors with some sensitivity or "open" to this kind of mystical experience. Many are the accounts of people who have felt "reenergized" by the simple contemplation of a sunset in Lajedo de Pai Mateus.

The same was raised from the Potengi River, strategic point where it gave the possibility of the Portuguese observing the whole territory without any threat.

Natal is the closest state capital of Brazil to Africa and Europe.

The popular beaches of Natal Beautiful beach with perfect scenery is what most has in Natal and all of Rio Grande do Norte. You will find shore for all tastes. In addition to the urban beaches, there are still the wonders of the state coastal areas. It is even difficult to choose which of these you are going to visit on those shorter holidays.

It is possible to find some of the best hotels in the state, renowned restaurants, fairs, exhibitions, concert halls and more. This one is very popular and hectic. Rustic coconut palms and kiosks are part of the decorative structure here. You'll find people of all ages roaming the long strip of sandy beach, and lots of lively people coming here to enjoy the delicious Christmas sun.

Rio Grande do Norte is dominated by its coastline. The state is famed for its beaches and sand dunes, and the air is, according to NASA, the second-cleanest in the world after Antarctica. It is also a relevant administrative centre for the oil industry (Rio Grande do Norte being the second largest oil-producing state in Brazil). The fishing industry is strong (shark cartilage being a major export to Japan) as is the cultivation of tropical fruit, especially mangos, guavas, and cashews (the fruit and the nuts). In fact, the largest cashew tree in the world is located near the coast in the neighbourhood of Pirangi, south of the city centre. This tree has a circumference of 500 metres and occupies an area of 7,300 m², making it 70 times the size of average cashew trees. Genibabu Natal Background

The east side of the island is dominated by savanna vegetation. There are large fazendas with animal husbandry. This is also the location of Lake Arari, which has an area of 400 square kilometres but shrinks by 80% during the dry season. There are large herds of domesticated water buffalo, which are technically invasive to the island; they now number about 450,000, higher than the island's human population. The west side of the island is characterized by Várzea forests and small farms. Lumber and açaí are produced there. The island is in the Marajó várzea ecoregion, an area of seasonally and tidally flooded várzea forest. To the north of the large savanna area are palm swamps, mainly with Buriti Palm (Mauritia flexuosa) and Euterpe oleracea. During the rainy season, the swamps are flooded one meter high. Little is known about the ecology of these swamps.

One of Brazil's largest goat breeders, who collaborated with the selection and preservation of more than a dozen races on Farm Carnaúba is Manuel Dantas Vilar Filho, better known as Dr. Manelito

Shall we bread goats ?

Dr. Manelito wanted to show to the Brazilian government that it is possible to farm in the north-eastern region of Brazil, even with the low rain fall.

At the beginning of the goat breeding there were less than 150 animals. Today, an average of 2,300 goats are a reference because they have managed to reach the zero-mortality rate, thus increasing their efficiency. BRAZIL TOUR JULY 2019

It is a pole of technological development of irrigated fruit cultivation, implemented by the Companhia de Desenvolvimento dos Vales do São Francisco and Parnaíba (Codevasf) and private initiative, with support from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa). Recently, the region became the second wine culture centre in Brazil, with an annual production of 7 million litres of wine (15% of national production), 30% of nationally and internationally awarded fine wines produced in the eight wineries in the municipalities of Pernambuco, Lagoa Grande and Santa Maria da Boa Vista, and in Casa Nova, Bahia. In addition to rice production with irrigation in Curaçá, Bahia. The region has the infrastructure of the Petrolina International Airport; of the San Francisco waterway, with Lake Sobradinho, the largest artificial lake in the world; of locks at the Sobradinho Dam; road link with the main capitals of the Northeast; and a thermoelectric plant with capacity to generate 138 megawatts of energy.

Day 6 – 17/7/19 – Activities in the region of Juazeiro and Petrolina Around 8 o'clock in the morning, visit to the Terranova winery. Unlike most vineyards, Newfoundland has up to two and a half grape harvests a year due to its control of the vineyard cycle. That is, the normal cycle that takes a year in most of the world, it takes only 4 months. On one side they are green and laden with grapes, on the other side they are being born or still in the pruning phase. This is the driest region in Brazil. Each year they count on 3,100 hours of sunshine and only 400mm of annual rainfall. Winter never arrives differently from most wineries around the world (including Brazilian ones). What causes such a miracle is the continuous and localized irrigation by drip system of the São Francisco River. The São Francisco River is one of the most important water courses in Brazil and South America. It passes through 5 states and 521 municipalities. Velho Chico, as it is known, is 2,800 kilometres long and its source is located in Serra da Canastra, in Minas Gerais. Besides its importance in energy production, it is also responsible for irrigated fruit production in the regions of Juazeiro (BA) and Petrolina (PE). The plantation is dedicated to the perfect grape for sparkling wines, young and fruity wines, and also the best grape juice that you will find in the market.
