One-Room House One-Room House A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Architecture In the School of Architecture and Interior Design of the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning By Caleb Lang Bachelor of Science in Architecture University of Cincinnati February 24, 2020 Committee Chair : Michael Mcinturf Committee Member : Aarati Kanekar LangLang 002 02 Abstract: As the cost of living in high-density cities rise, society continues to tell people that more space is both better and necessary. Many couples find that they cannot afford the extra space “required” to raise a child in the city, so they choose to either move to the suburbs or to not have children. Square footage is the largest factor in determining the perceived value of a home and smaller homes and apartments are seen as “temporary” until one can afford something larger. In the suburbs, the trend in housing is to have one room for each different function that needs to occur in the home. If a one-room studio apartment could provide all the functional and privacy needs of a family of three in the location they want and at an affordable cost would renters still choose to “upgrade” to the suburbs to get more space or would they be content with “enough” space in the city? The goal is to bring the focus of value back to location instead of size and dispel with the ideas of a temporary “starter” home. My proposed solution is to design a single, flexible, small space that can adapt to both the user’s daily needs as well as changing needs over time as the number of users changes. This will be a 300-600 square foot space that can permanently house at least a couple with a child with room for an occasional guest. As a proof -of-concept, I will construct a full-scale mock-up of the space and have a couple with children inhabit it and document their experiences in order to judge the design’s effectiveness and to show them another way to think about space. This line of thinking can help make city living more affordable and reduce suburban sprawl by changing the way that families look at space and its value. • The Twenty Greatest Music Concerts I've Ever Seen
THE TWENTY GREATEST MUSIC CONCERTS I'VE EVER SEEN Whew, I'm done. Let me remind everyone how this worked. I would go through my Ipod in that weird Ipod alphabetical order and when I would come upon an artist that I have seen live, I would replay that concert in my head. (BTW, since this segment started I no longer even have an ipod. All my music is on my laptop and phone now.) The number you see at the end of the concert description is the number of times I have seen that artist live. If it was multiple times, I would do my best to describe the one concert that I considered to be their best. If no number appears, it means I only saw that artist once. Mind you, I have seen many artists live that I do not have a song by on my Ipod. That artist is not represented here. So although the final number of concerts I have seen came to 828 concerts (wow, 828!), the number is actually higher. And there are "bar" bands and artists (like LeCompt and Sam Butera, for example) where I have seen them perform hundreds of sets, but I counted those as "one," although I have seen Lecompt in "concert" also. Any show you see with the four stars (****) means they came damn close to being one of the Top Twenty, but they fell just short. So here's the Twenty. Enjoy and thanks so much for all of your input. And don't sue me if I have a date wrong here and there.

This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

  • Arxiv:1503.00071V1 [Cs.MA] 28 Feb 2015 Is Why Police Officers in Large Numbers Are Assigned at These Places to Ensure Safe Management of Crowd
Crowd Congestion and Stampede Management through Multi Robotic Agents Garima Ahuja and Kamalakar Karlapalem Center for Data Engineering, International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad, India {[email protected],[email protected]} Abstract. Crowd management is a complex, challenging and crucial task. Lack of appropriate management of crowd has, in past, led to many unfortunate stampedes with significant loss of life. To increase the crowd management efficiency, we deploy automated real time detection of stampede prone areas. Then, we use robotic agents to aid the crowd management police in controlling the crowd in these stampede prone ar- eas. While doing so, we aim for minimum interference by robotic agents in our environment. Thereby not disturbing the ambience and aesthetics of the place. We evaluate the effectiveness of our model in dealing with difficult scenarios like emergency evacuation and presence of localized congestion. Lastly, we simulate a multi agent system based on our model and use it to illustrate the utility of robotic agents for detecting and reducing congestion. Keywords: Crowd Management, Stampede, Congestion, Localized Con- gestion, Emergency Evacuation 1 Introduction Managing large crowds is a difficult task. Ineffective execution of this task can potentially lead to stampedes. History suggests that crowd management police appointed to prevent such incidents have not been very successful. During a coro- nation festival in Russia, a police force of 1,800 men failed to control the crowd, leading to loss of 1,389 lives by trampling [4]. Crowd management is a team task, it requires strategic communication to figure out where to lead the crowd.

  • America's Changing Mirror: How Popular Music Reflects Public
AMERICA’S CHANGING MIRROR: HOW POPULAR MUSIC REFLECTS PUBLIC OPINION DURING WARTIME by Christina Tomlinson Campbell University Faculty Mentor Jaclyn Stanke Campbell University Entertainment is always a national asset. Invaluable in times of peace, it is indispensable in wartime. All those who are working in the entertainment industry are building and maintaining national morale both on the battlefront and on the home front. 1 Franklin D. Roosevelt, June 12, 1943 Whether or not we admit it, societies change in wartime. It is safe to say that after every war in America’s history, society undergoes large changes or embraces new mores, depending on the extent to which war has affected the nation. Some of the “smaller wars” in our history, like the Mexican-American War or the Spanish-American War, have left little traces of change that scarcely venture beyond some territorial adjustments and honorable mentions in our textbooks. Other wars have had profound effects in their aftermath or began as a result of a 1 Telegram to the National Conference of the Entertainment Industry for War Activities, quoted in John Bush Jones, The Songs that Fought the War: Popular Music and the Home Front, 1939-1945 (Lebanon, NH: University Press of New England, 2006), 31. catastrophic event: World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the current wars in the Middle East. These major conflicts create changes in society that are experienced in the long term, whether expressed in new legislation, changed social customs, or new ways of thinking about government. While some of these large social shifts may be easy to spot, such as the GI Bill or the baby boom phenomenon in the 1940s and 1950s, it is also interesting to consider the changed ways of thinking in modern societies as a result of war and the degree to which information is filtered.
