The gendering of sports news: An investigation into the production, content and reception of sports photographs of athletes in New Zealand newspapers. A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Waikato By SUSAN SCOTT-CHAPMAN 2012 ABSTRACT This study investigates the selection, content, meaning and reception of photographs of sportswomen featured in New Zealand newspapers, in order to establish the relationship between media representations and cultural understandings of sportswomen and women’s sport. The study adopts a feminist cultural studies perspective and questions how photographs of sportswomen are constructed and perceived through dominant discourses of gender, sport and nationalism by media decision-makers and audiences alike, within contexts that are shaped by gender power relations and hierarchies. The first component of this tripartite study comprises two periods of participant observation and interviews conducted at a New Zealand media organization.

The day turned out to be more eventful than I expected as I only expected to see a start. Vanessa (daughter)and I headed to Charleroi by train to catch the start of Stage 2. Didn ’t go quite to plan as we didn ’t get there early enough to mingle with the riders although we made it for the start. The photo attached is just after the start. On the way from the station to the start I spied a guy building a wheel at the CSC truck on a wheel build mount like no other so I took a photo to be able to show Campbell. On the way back the guy was still building a wheel -putting locktite on the nipples and spoke ends actually which I found interesting too.Whilst watching him and hearing him speak a language or two I thought with long downhills -I never was convinced).
