  • Letter from Scientists Regarding the Boreal Forest
Letter from scientists regarding the Boreal Forest Dear Premier Charest, In a letter sent in May 2007, 1,500 scientists from more than 50 countries around the world, including 71 from Quebec, asked Canadian government leaders to ensure the protection of at least 50% of Canada’s Boreal forest. Since making this appeal, we have followed the progression of this file with keen interest. We were delighted to hear, on November 15, 2008, the commitment that "by 2015, [...] 50% of the area covered by the Plan Nord will be protected from industrial, mining and energy development." This commitment was reiterated in March in your speech at Mont Saint-Bruno National Park announcing that Quebec had reached its objective of 8% protected areas. Your commitment deserves our public support; in protecting northern Quebec’s natural environment and ensuring responsible development in the rest of the area, your government will set in motion one of the most ambitious sustainable development and nature conservation projects in North America, and one that could serve as a model for the rest of the world. Scientists have already catalogued some of the natural resources that constitute the natural heritage of northern Quebec. In terms of wildlife, northern Quebec provides habitat for 340 million birds,i more than a million tundra caribou and some of the largest populations of freshwater fish in North America. However, the populations of some species are too low: the woodland caribou, the wolverine and the golden eagle are all on Quebec’s threatened or vulnerable species lists. In terms of the region’s ecological benefits to society, including water filtration and carbon storage, their value is estimated at 13.8 times the value of the natural resources extracted from it each year.

Going further CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 1 2 AVENIR GLOBAL Corporate Responsibility Report 3 At AVENIR GLOBAL, corporate responsibility is part of our DNA. As for every project we are involved in, we strive to go above and beyond. Our Corporate Responsibility Policy is a core component of our culture and guides us in how we conduct business. GOING FURTHER We continuously search for ways to go further, to push our limits, both in terms of business—in 2019, the acquisition of Hanover, our sixth in five years, allowed us to expand into new markets such as the Middle East—and in terms of our corporate behaviour. In 2019, we pushed our commitment to integrity and professional conduct further by launching a Firm-wide Code of Conduct, which serves as the foundation for the Firm’s policies and procedures. 2019 also marked the first year of The Institute 301, the third level of our in-house, Firm-wide learning program. We welcomed a cohort of 12 senior leaders from across multiple brands and markets for a year-long program with the goal of strengthening their understanding and vision of the Firm, the business of the business, and the key role they play as leaders of a broader network. Our people work tirelessly to help their clients succeed and work just as hard for their communities. We greatly value and encourage our people’s commitment to local organizations supporting a wide range of causes, from hunger relief, youth and the elderly, to diversity and culture. And we are proud to continue our efforts of making our business practices more sustainable by recycling, composting and reducing our use of all types of consumables.

  • Elementary Students' Affective Variables in a Networked
This study documents to what extent writing on a blog in a networked learning environment could influence the affective variables of elementary-school students’ writing. The framework is grounded more specifically in theory of self-determination (Deci & Ryan, 1985), relationship to writing (Chartrand & Prince, 2009) and the transactional theory of Rosenblatt (1991). The research team used both pre and post-tests to measure affective variables and the analysis was conducted on the basis of inferential and correlational statistics using SPSS 17®. Qualitative analysis is also used to identify writing intents and topics of blog posts. Results indicate an increase in motivation to write in pupils who used the blog, whereas the number of comments made per post did not seem to have any definitive impact on this subject.
