tn umn I nrcrwarilt rfflfci naff opinion theres some poetically inspired angst mixed in for good measure Looking back to freshman year I cant count how many times I heard Denidoogooders say youve got to get involved As a first year student I think I murmured the words in my sleep I had absolutely no experience as a news writer when my friend introduced me to a Denisonian editor in fall the of 1985 My friend was a writer even had a byline on the front page It seemed Balanced perspective toward exciting And I was impressed by the editorials I read over Saga food in Huffman They called for academic integrity hard work- sounded good The writers were also creauve I can sull hear fraternities needed the skipping record on the turntable of a fictional girl who had killed herself in an essay about suicide It affected me And I got addicted I admit it The habit started small as I A paradox has been perpetuated on Denisons campus for far too most do was assigned to do an interview with William Zinsser the formal long general editor of The Book of the Month Club and author of On Writing Well 1986 I know I In light of the recent fraternity bashing it is time someone dont what was thinking when I went into the interview and started asking him about his personal stepped forward and said something in their defense history his resume I was naive a green reporter who turned red when Zinsser asked To begin to say is me what someone a fraternity member has become a exactly I wanted then suggested I turn to the section on reporting in his Writing Well stereotype in and of itself Obviously at Denison some just hear the It happened again I when tried to do an interview with a retiring professor Again I made no word fraternity and negative connotations are soon to follow But is attempt to become familiar with the man before the meeting I was humbled when he showed it really fair to lump the majority of Denison me males into one negative books dedicated to him and written by his former students category because a few have acted inappropriately I But kept coming back for more a Denisonian pledge It got a little better I Not all men who are members of fraternities or live on the row when activated In the wake of last years protests against racism I was invited by are jerks in fact most of them are not Yet upon the actions of a few WOSU public TV to do a talk show wiih two other reporters the male greeks the whole system is judged about issue that I covered for the paper So there were some There has been too much generalization about members of embarrassing moments and others filled with a reporters pride the hiehs and lows of a fraternities and many of the stereotypes put forward by the faculty in street drug the Like any addict I front page article this week just are not true hit the skids sometimes Overextended as a sophomore and close to nervous For breakdown as I example God forbid one is a smart male and a greek within a junior hit up other newsprint junkies to help mc out buy me time They did die given stereotype the two just do not coincide And I recovered a bit I But still sit here 3 am the morning before production night race to Second let lightning strike if one has a serious girlfriend deadline and he jam on computers layout paper death night Here I sit writing this essay is greek Under the fraternity because its stereotype this just is not possible my turn to fill this space tradition and all I couldnt sleep But look around who are these greek male members Once is it Now I hand the soapbox strings to the next in line another brought down to a personal and strung out articulate addict of the individual level many of these men do college news trade Mark Sanor not fit the should guide the cart well hell need to that left front wheel is stereotype which has been assigned to them loose There are obviously greek males who make substantial contributions to this community The president and vice president of DCGA editorinch- ief of the Denisonian vice president of DC A co- chair of SJC members of senate and UJB members of Crossed Keys DLS and Omnicron Delta Kappa these arc male fraterinity members in leadership positions So here is the paradox the men often condemned for their social ties are many of the leaders and participators in the community itself In the recent past there have been many accusations of special privileges on fraternity row Well these are impossible to deny It is however time to change the focus of the question from who is getting special rights to why some are getting these rights as opposed to others The problem is not solely greek males but rather the system perpetuated at Denison Fraternities have become the pinnacle of the community at times its as if the rest of the community revolves around them We as a community need to ask Why is that The obvious answer is because they have been allowed to do so There has been a lot of negative talk about the fraternities but little has been done by the administration to make them the equivalent of ouicr places 01 residence on tins campus It would be unrealistic to expect fraternity members to say Okay you are right we have different rights than other students Just lake them away and well live like everyone else The fraternity system has grown to the extent that the members have come to expect certain rights as opposed to living in residence halls and of course they are going to try and defend them Thus the fault lies partially within the administration There is a lot of discussion about diversity but little action to create equality at the fraternity level But male gTcek members need to realize it is not as simple as a problem of a misguided system Much of the responsibilty rests upon their shoulders Greek males need to rise to the challenge Student leaders within fraternities need to take the initiative to ensure responsibility confront the accusations applied to them and if what has been said is true about racism discrimination irresponsibility etc then take the needed measures to make reforms The change can come from within the system and to be quite honest if it does not it is scon to come from without THURSDAY DECEMBER 8 1988 PAGE 3 Getting to the Bottom of Love in the Celebrities Should Take 80s Lead in Drug War byMikeRoyko By Jim Burnley to football the NBA allows a
