Turk J Bot 31 (2007) 297-310 © TÜB‹TAK Research Article Characteristics of the Stem-Leaf Transitional Zone in Some Species of Caesalpinioideae (Leguminosae) Abdel Samai Moustafa SHAHEEN Botany Department, Aswan Faculty of Science, South Valley University - EGYPT Received: 14.02.2006 Accepted: 15.02.2007 Abstract: The vascular supply of the proximal, middle, and distal parts of the petiole were studied in 11 caesalpinioid species with the aim of documenting any changes in vascular anatomy that occurred within and between the petioles. The characters that proved to be taxonomically useful include vascular trace shape, pericyclic fibre forms, number of abaxial and adaxial vascular bundles, number and relative position of secondary vascular bundles, accessory vascular bundle status, the tendency of abaxial vascular bundles to divide, distribution of sclerenchyma, distribution of cluster crystals, and type of petiole trichomes. There is variation between studied species in the number of abaxial, adaxial, and secondary bundles, as seen in transection of the petiole. There are also differences between leaf trace structure of the proximal, middle, and distal regions of the petioles within each examined species. Senna italica Mill. and Bauhinia variegata L. show an abnormality in their leaf trace structure, having accessory bundles (concentric bundles) in the core of the trace. This study supports the moving of Ceratonia L. from the tribe Cassieae to the tribe Detarieae. Most of the characters give valuable taxonomic evidence reliable for delimiting the species investigated (especially between Cassia L. and Senna (Cav.) H.S.Irwin & Barneby) at the generic and specific levels, as well as their phylogenetic relationships. -

Entre ellos, las abejas constituyen un eslabón esencial en la polinización de angiospermas que durante millones de años desarrollaron estrategias cada vez más específicas para atraerlas. De esta forma se establece una relación muy fuerte entre am- bos, planta-polinizador, y cuanto mayor es la especialización, tal como sucede en un gran número de especies de orquídeas y cactáceas entre otros grupos, ésta se torna más vulnerable ante cambios ambientales naturales o producidos por el hombre. De esta forma, el estudio de este tipo de interacciones resulta cada vez más importante en vista del incremento de áreas perturbadas o modificadas de manera antrópica en las cuales la fauna y flora queda expuesta a adaptarse a las nuevas condiciones o desaparecer. -

Este trabalho apresenta o estudo taxonômico do gênero Senna para o Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. São encontradas 19 espécies, sendo que Senna aphylla (Cav.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby, S. araucarietorum H.S. Irwin & Barneby, S. pendula (Willd.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby, S. scabriuscula (Vogel) H.S. Irwin & Barneby e S. spectabilis (DC.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby são registradas pela primeira vez para a flora do Estado. São apresentadas chave analítica, descrições e ilustrações para as espécies. Além disso, são fornecidos dados sobre a distribuição geográfica, hábitat, nomes vulgares e importância econômica das espécies estudadas. This paper presents a taxonomic study of the species of the genus Senna occurring in Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil. Nineteen species were found and the occurences of Senna aphylla (Cav.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby, S. araucarietorum H.S. Irwin & Barneby, S. pendula (Willd.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby, S. scabriuscula (Vogel) H.S. Irwin & Barneby and S. spectabilis (DC.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby are recorded for the first time in Rio Grande do Sul. Analitical key, species descriptions and illustrations are presented. -

E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. Senna comprises about 300 species with circuntropical distribution, widely represented in the Americas, also occurring in Africa, Australia, Asia and Oceania. The Brazil includes 80 species, of which 27 are endemic, 50 reported from Bahia and 22 recorded from the Caatinga. The floristic survey of Senna in the Ecological Station Raso da Catarina included analysis of specimens collected March 2010 to October 2011. The analyses were supplemented with dried collections from the following herbaria: ALCB, EAC, HRB, HUEFS and MBM. Seven taxa were recorded. The most representative taxa in the area were Senna rizzinii H.S.Irwin & Barneby and S. acuruensis (Benth.) H.S.Irwin & Barneby var. acuruensis. The genus can be found in a variety of environments from preserved to degraded areas and in sandy, sandy-clayey or rocky soils. The taxonomic treatment includes anidentification key, descriptions, illustrations, photos, data of the geographical distribution, reproductive phenology and comments about the taxa. Le genre Senna (Cassiinae, Leguminosae) au Paraguay: synopsis, répartition, rôle écologique et ethnobotanique. Candollea 61: 315-329. En anglais, résumés français et anglais. Senna (Cassiinae, Leguminosae) est un genre qui compte env. 350 espèces, distribuées principale- ment dans les tropiques et en Amérique tempérée. Les auteurs reconnaissent 23 espèces pour le Paraguay. Une d’entre elles, S. macranthera, est nouvelle pour le Paraguay. La distribution des espèces est discutée. Celles-ci sont largement répandues au Paraguay. Néanmoins, on peut qualifier quatre espèces de peu fréquentes (moins de trois localités) et trois autres de rares. Leur statut de conservation est discuté par les auteurs. Le rôle écologique des espèces de Senna est aussi analysé, celles-ci offrant du pollen aux abeilles et du nectar extrafloral aux fourmis. Les aspects ethnobota- niques et l’utilisation ornementale de ces espèces sont passés en revue par les auteurs. Les clés de détermination publiées dans les révisions récentes du genre étant construites autour des relations systématiques entre les espèces de Senna, les auteurs présentent une nouvelle clé de détermination des espèces de ce genre au Paraguay, basée sur un critère pratique.
