UNLV alumni across the globe are putting on performances in boardrooms and offices, in studios and on battlefields, in classrooms and in their communities. The stages differ, but the response remains the same. With their education and experience shining through, it’s clear this is where they ought to be–on center stage. UNLV Alumni Association

For more than 30 years, the UNLV Alumni Association has recognized exceptional individuals who represent the ideals of higher learning and Rebel pride. Through the awards program, the Alumni Association recognizes alumni, faculty, students, and community leaders for their outstanding achievements and leadership at the university as well as throughout our community. These recipients truly serve as inspiration for F the generations of students who will follow. About the UNLV Alumni Association The UNLV Alumni Association was established in 1964 as a not-for-profit organization to promote and enhance alumni engagement on campus.

To date, the association has contributed more than $6.6 million to the university in student scholarships, endowments, and major capital improvements such as the Alumni Amphitheater, Alumni Grove, Alumni Park, and the $2.7 million Richard Tam Alumni Center.

Outstanding Alumnus/a of the Year Award The outstanding Alumnus/a of the Year award is the most prestigious honor given to an alumnus/a by the Alumni Association. It is bestowed in recognition of significant contributions supporting the UNLV community.

Silver State Award This award of distinction is presented to a non-alumnus/a by the association for noteworthy contributions to the university and the community at large.

Achievement in Service Award The Achievement in Service award gives recognition for service to UNLV, the UNLV student body, and/or the Alumni Association in support of alumni-related activities and events.

Outstanding Faculty Award The Alumni Association recognizes a distinguished UNLV faculty member for their commitment to teaching, research, and service, as well as lasting contributions to student growth and development.

Outstanding Faculty Member of the year Joseph John Morgan, ’07 M.Ed, Special Education and ’12 PhD Special Education, is an assistant professor in the College of Education’s department of educational and clinical studies.

He is also the co-project coordinator for “Project CULTURED: College and University Leaders Trained to Understand and Respond to Exceptionalities and Diversity,” a program funded by a $1 million U.S. Department of Education grant. He was also the co-project coordinator for “Project Grow: Supporting Biology Achievement through Data-Based Decision Making,” which was funded by a grant. Morgan has been involved with numerous other grant-funded special education research projects at the university.

Morgan received UNLV’s President’s Graduate Fellowship in 2011, which is award- ed to three doctoral students across the University for high quality dissertation re- search. He has served as an advocate and spokesperson for education in the state of and was given the Outstanding Service Award by the College of Education in 2014. He was also nominated for the college’s Collaboration Award in 2012 as well as the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year honor in 2010, given by the Council for Exceptional Children. Morgan is also on the editorial board of several prestigious academic journals. Awards

Lee Business School Michael PeQueen, ‘88 BS Finance, is currently managing director and partner at HighTower , a local wealth management firm. He was also the UNLV Finance Department Alumnus of the year in 2012. He has been in the investment field for close to 30 years.

Having counseled hundreds of clients on investment strategy and financial planning, PeQueen holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is also a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). He also earned a master’s degree in banking and financial services from Boston University and appears regularly on CNBC and Fox Business in addition to having been interviewed by the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. In addition, PeQueen is the co-founder of Dental Care International, a nonprofit offering oral health care to underserved populations around the world. He is also a board member of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce’s Chamber Insurance & Benefits program.

School of Dental Medicine Robert B. Hale, ’09 DMD, began practicing endodontics in 2013 in Dallas, Texas after suffering a debilitating stroke in 2011, only six weeks prior to completing his two-year residency program. The medical setback would require Hale to undergo 15 months of full-time cognitive and physical therapy, regaining his ability to walk, his memory, verbal processing and other losses.

Now, as an endodontist in Salt Lake City, he has begun the process of organizing a local alumni chapter for UNLV School of Dentistry graduates in coalition with other UNLV Alumni in the area. In 2007, he became president and founder of the UNLV Endodontic Study Club, allowing dental students interested in the endodontic field to learn more about research and treatment techniques. In 2013, the study club was renamed the “Rob Hale Endodontic Study Club” in his honor and continues to meet regularly.

Since graduating, he has continued to volunteer with humanitarian organizations like Smiles for Central America in El Salvador and the American Association of Endodontists’ Access to Care project in San Antonio. He received the Student Achievement Award in Endodontics from the American Association of Endodontists in 2009. He has also co-authored research comparing healing rates of different endodontic techniques performed by undergraduate dental students that was published in the International Journal of Dentistry. College of Education William “Mike” R. Barton, ’00 MEd Educational Leadership and ’06 EdD Educational Leadership, is currently the chief student achievement officer with the Clark County School District (CCSD). Previously, he served as the associate superintendent for the Instruction Unit and the academic manager for Performance Zone 8 in CCSD. He has been a principal at high-need schools and has experience at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Before becoming a principal, Barton was a classroom teacher as well as a facilitator of teacher professional development efforts at schools. He has also served as a UNLV adjunct faculty member and taught a course on school finance for aspiring administrators.

Barton has maintained close ties to his alma mater by having the CCSD Instruction Unit collaborate with UNLV administration and faculty on research projects and has worked with the College of Urban Affairs and the Provost’s Office to design and implement a leadership program to assist with the principal pipeline needed at CCSD.

Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering Bradford Colton, ’94 BS-EG Mechanical Engineering, is a research engineer for American Pacific Corp.’s Halotron Division, in Nevada. In his role, Colton evaluates and researches new fire extinguishing agents while offering technical support for the company’s Halotron clean fire extinguishing agent product lines. He also conducts classroom and live fire training for fire extinguishers and ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) vehicle systems.

Colton has published several research articles related to fire extinguishing agents and holds two US patents for agent formulations. He is currently Head of Delegation of the US Technical Advisory Group for ISO standards on portable fire extinguishers and is a director of the Silver State ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) section. He has been a member of the UNLV Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board for more than five years and is an industry mentor to the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society. Awards

College of Fine Arts Danielle Kelly, ’07 MFA Art, is the executive director of Las Vegas’ Neon Museum. Her sculpture and performance-based work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. She is a contributing writer to a variety of regional publications.

Under her guidance, Kelly has helped the Neon Museum transition from a small grassroots entity with 500 monthly visitors to one that hosts more than 7,000 visitors per month and is a USA Today editor’s pick for best Las Vegas attractions. She was the project manager for the rehabilitation of the historic La Concha Motel Lobby into the Neon Museum’s visitor center and also oversaw the restoration and installation of six iconic signs as public art on Las Vegas Boulevard. She even led the curation and installation of the Neon Museum’s Boneyard.

Since graduating from UNLV, Kelly has helped UNLV graduates attain valuable internship experiences and jobs in the field. She has been a visiting artist and/or lecturer at a variety of institutions, including the Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland Community College, Whittier College, the Clark County Government Center, and the Wildlife Divide, a Southern Nevada Conservancy initiative at Mt. Charleston. In 2010, she was awarded a Jackpot Grant by the Nevada Arts Council and a Cirque du Soleil Support for the Cultural Milieu Grant. She’s a 2015 graduate of the Las Vegas Chamber’s Leadership Institute.

School of Community Health Sciences Scott Hillegass, ’95 BS Health Care Administration, is the president and CEO of Fundamental Clinical and Operational Services LLC, where he is responsible for the clinical, financial and operational budgets.

Hillegass has amassed more than 20 years of diverse industry experience ranging from hands-on patient care to fiscal management, operations, and numerous other areas. He spent nine years with Integrated Health Services, Inc. where he was administrator of a 118-bed acute care facility and was instrumental in negotiating major HMO contracts resulting in $45 million in annual revenue.

He has also served as vice president for state healthcare advocacy group Nevada Healthcare Administration, where he influenced policy change and the conversion of the Medicare Reimbursement system in Nevada. Hillegass has remained actively involved with UNLV’s Department of Health Care Administration and Policy (HCAP) and has helped secure undergraduate practicum placements and graduate student internships; he also sits on the HCAP advisory board. Honors College Nadin Cutter, ’05 BS-BA Business Administration; ’08 JD, is the managing partner of Cutter Law Firm. She represents clients in business litigation, family litigation, and estate planning. Cutter enjoys helping businesses grow, creating their contracts and litigating their disputes. One of her passions is asset protection and proper estate planning for one’s heirs.

Cutter was voted by her peers as one of Southern Nevada’s Top 100 Lawyers as part of Nevada’s Legal Elite in 2011, 2013 and 2015 by Nevada Business Magazine. She is a 2012 graduate of the Las Vegas Glass Leadership Institute (Anti-Defamation League) and earned Avvo’s Client’s Choice Award for Business Law and Family Law in 2012. Recently, she was also voted as a Top 40 Under 40 Trial Attorney by the National Trial Lawyers Association.

William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration John Ceriale, ’75 BS Hotel Administration, is founder and president of Prospect Advisors, a hospitality consultant to the Blackstone Group, the largest owner of hospitality assets in the world. Prior to founding Prospect Advisors, he served as Senior Vice President of Operations for Westin Hotels and Resorts North America. There, he oversaw the operation of 60 hotels and helped reinvent the Westin brand.

Between 1998 and 2004, Ceriale played a key role in Blackstone’s acquisition of several leading brands and properties, among them Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Boca Resorts Inc, The Savoy, The Berkeley and others. In 2007, Ceriale played a large role in helping Blackstone acquire Hilton Hotels, boosting its hotel room portfolio to 600,000. In 2014, he was an advisor on two of the largest hospitality deals on record: the sale of the Waldorf Astoria in New York and Blackstone’s purchase of The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.

He is also the creator and managing partner of the Savoy Group and LXR Luxury Resorts and in this role has worked with internationally-acclaimed architects, interior designers and chefs including: Thierry Despont, David Collins, Barbara Barry, Gordon Ramsay, Tony Chi, David Rockwell, and Angela Hartnett among others. William S. Boyd School of Law Linda Marquis, ’03 JD, is the presiding judge in Department B of the Eighth Judicial District Court, Family Division. Prior to being elected District Court Judge, Marquis served as a Justice of the Peace Pro Tem in Las Vegas Justice Court and North Las Vegas Justice Court, an Alternate Judge for the Las Vegas Municipal Court, and the Clark County Commission appointed her as a presiding officer for the Police Fatality Fact Finding Review Board.

As a student at Boyd, Marquis taught the Family Law Community Service class. She went on to work with Professor Mary Berkheiser as a student attorney in the Juvenile Justice Clinic.

Outside her practice, Marquis has served as the president of the Boyd School of Law Alumni Association, spoke at law school graduations, participated in community events, and led continuing legal education classes. In 2006, the State Bar of Nevada awarded her with the Access to Justice Award for outstanding service.

College of Liberal Arts Maile Chapman, ’10 PhD English, is the author of the novel Your Presence Is Requested at Suvanto, a finalist for the PEN Center USA literary award in fiction as well as for the Guardian First Book Award. Chapman’s stories have appeared in Boston Review, Best American Fantasy Writing, Dublin Review and other publications.

In 2002, she was a Fulbright Grantee to Finland to research early twentieth-century hospitals. She was also a Fellow at the New York Public Library’s Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers in 2010-11. She joined the UNLV faculty in 2011 and is an assistant professor of English and the artistic director of the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute. She is also the editor of Witness, the literary magazine published by the Black Mountain Institute.

Chapman was the Las Vegas facilitator for Literature & Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Healthcare, a nationwide program developed for medical staff. She now serves on the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health’s Voice of the Patient Advisory Council, created to integrate the voices of volunteers, patients, family members and caregivers into programs to improve the quality of life for people living with memory loss. School of Nursing Margaret E. Covelli, ’12 DNP Nursing, was a member of the inaugural UNLV SON Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) cohort and today is the chief nursing officer at Spring Valley Hospital.

She is a past winner of the Distinguished Nurse of the Year honor from the Southern Nevada March of Dimes. She was an appointee of the Governor’s Nevada Workforce Investment Board, a finalist for the 2003 Nursing Excellence Award from Nurse Week and a Vegas Inc Healthcare Hero honoree in 2011. She was also appointed to the Nevada State Board of Nursing’s Education Advisory Committee.

Covelli speaks to incoming nursing students at graduate and undergraduate orientations and at nursing recognition ceremonies. She helped develop dedicated education units for UNLV nursing students to gain realistic educational experiences, a program unique to UNLV SON students. She also collaborates with UNLV SON graduate students on their research efforts.

College of Sciences Matthew W. Schwartz, MD, ’96 BS Biology, received his medical degree from the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno in 2001. He joined Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada as a radiation oncologist in July 2006 and currently serves as a member of the Radiation Executive Committee of The US Oncology Network. He serves as the chairman of the marketing committee of Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada, and is the chairman of the Board of Managers of the Las Vegas Cyberknife. Schwartz also participates in clinical research and has served as principal investigator on various groundbreaking research studies. In addition, he has authored, or co-authored, several scientific papers and has been a speaker at conferences in the field of radiation therapy.

During medical school and specialized training, Schwartz received the Excellence in Research award from the Western Student Medical Research Forum in 1999. He also received the Resident Award in 2004 for excellence in presentations and communication skills as well as the award for medical expert and professionalism from McGill University Health Center in 2006. He was named “Top Doctor” by Las Vegas Life magazine and was recognized as a “Medical Marvel” by Nevada Business Magazine in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Awards

Greenspun College of Urban Affairs Hannah Birch, ’12 BA Journalism & Media Studies, is a web producer for ProPublica, in New York. She earned the prestigious Pulitzer Prize less than two years into her career. Birch was a key part of the Seattle Times team that won the award for its breaking news reporting coverage of the tragic Shohomish County mudslide in March 2014.

As a student, Birch created the Las Vegas Dance Insider blog in 2010, which she maintained until graduation in 2012. She applied for a copy-editing internship at the Seattle Times in 2012 and was hired even before the internship ended as an associate news producer. Birch has had her story told through local media outlets and she has agreed to participate in future career days held by the journalism program.

Achievement in Service Matt Engle, ’91 BS Business Administration, is a licensed insurance professional who works for Cragin & Pike, one of Las Vegas’ oldest insurance firms. Engle has experience in commercial and personal lines and has also worked as an area business manager for AAA, where he was a three-time President’s Circle Award winner as a top three manager. He has also received the Las Vegas Business Press “Rising Star” award based on his career achievements, philanthropy, and community involvement.

Engle has been involved with UNLV for many years. An active board member with the UNLV Alumni Association for eight years, he was president from 2010 to 2012. In that role, Engle oversaw the implementation of a number of projects including development of the first-ever mobile app built exclusively for the association and the establishment of the Rebel Business Network. He worked to increase membership and participation as well as inclusion of college-based chapters. He has raised tens of thousands of dollars through personal donations, corporate sponsorships, and by chairing the association’s silent auction committee from 2008 to 2010. He also led the association’s participation in the 2010 Nevada legislative session and hosted a luncheon with legislators to promote higher education funding.

Engle currently serves as the chairman of the board for the Las Vegas Natural History Museum. He is an active board member with Downtown Las Vegas Alliance and a past graduate of Leadership Las Vegas through the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce. Awards

Silver State Award Edward J. (Ted) Quirk, ’10, Doctorate of Humane Letters (Honorary), is a past chair of the UNLV Foundation Board of Trustees. Quirk’s two-year tenure occurred at a time when The Foundation embarked on an extremely ambitious $500 million capital campaign. He has been associated with UNLV for years and continues to be a major proponent. He was awarded the President’s Medal in 2007 for his service to the university and community.

Quirk remains active with the UNLV Foundation by serving on its executive and investment committees. He was a founder of the Rebel Golf Foundation and has served on its board for 25 years. He was a founder of the UNLV Research Foundation, and currently serves as its chair. Less than two years ago, Quirk founded the Runnin’ Rebel Club, which has raised more than $800,000 in support for the UNLV basketball program, and serves as its treasurer. He has also served on many other UNLV committees related to both academics and athletics.

Quirk’s community engagement efforts are both varied and substantial. He served as president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas and was founder and chair of its foundation. He has served on the boards of the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum, Desert Research Foundation and is the Honorary Commander of the Security Forces at Nellis Air Force Base.

Professionally, Quirk was a founder of Quirk and Tratos, with a practice focused on intellectual property law. He remains of counsel to Greenberg Traurig following a merger of the firms. He is the past president of the Nevada Intellectual Property Law Society and has co-authored the Nevada chapter of the U.S. Trademark Association’s State Trademark Law Handbook. Quirk has achieved the highest possible peer-review ratings for attorneys for over 30 years, and has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America publication for copyright law, patent law, and trademark law since 1993. He has also been a principal in companies that have developed many commercial and residential properties in Las Vegas, including Spanish Trail, and was an owner of the popular nightclub, “The Beach.” Awards

Outstanding Alumna of the Year Kris Engelstad McGarry, ’92 BA Psychology and ’95 BSW Social Work, and her family have a long-standing commitment to supporting education and improving the quality of life in the Las Vegas Valley.

In June 2015, the Engelstad Family Foundation made a $10 million pledge to the new UNLV School of Medicine to fund 100 full four-year scholarships — 25 for the school’s 2017 charter class and 25 for each of the next three entering classes. Each scholarship is $100,000 over four years. This gift helped to complete the “60 by 16” scholarship drive to cover tuition for all 60 students in its charter class and provides 75 additional scholarships.

In 2009, the foundation donated $12.625 million to create the UNLV Engelstad Scholars’ Program, the largest active scholarship endowment in Nevada. The Engelstad Scholars’ Program awards full-tuition scholarships – renewable for up to four years – to UNLV students annually based on academic excellence, leadership, community service involvement and financial need. As part of the program requirements, scholars spend 100 hours each academic year engaged in community service with nonprofit organizations including the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, the Boys and Girls Clubs, and Three Square Food Bank. Fifty-five students are participating in the program this fall. That number will increase each fall until the program reaches its full complement of 100 scholars.

Engelstad McGarry is the daughter of Betty Engelstad and the late Ralph Engelstad, former owner of the Imperial Palace Hotel/Casino. The Engelstad Family Foundation has given more than $100 million to area nonprofits through the years and continues to be a major player in supporting agencies that address the community’s greatest needs.
