Austrian TO&Es 1980-1989 V1.1 Austrian TO&Es 1980-1989 v1.1 By R Mark Davies for Battlefront: Modern Austrian Army (a) I Army Corps (a) Like Finland, the size, structure and composition of Austria’s Army was severely limited by the terms of post-WW2 peace II Army Corps treaty. Consequently, the permanent standing Army was very small. However, universal male conscription meant that Austria had a very large trained reserve pool that would form Austria’s Wien Military Command ‘Landwehr’ militia forces in wartime, as well as sizeable chunks of the main reserve striking force – the Panzergrenadier Division. Another curious consequence of the post-war BATTLEGROUP CWAS-08 limitations was that Austria was not permitted any guided Guard Battalion (d) weapons, so no ATGMs, SAMs, AGMs or AAMs! This deficiency was rectified following the CFE Treaty in the late ARMY TROOPS 1980s and Austria bought Swedish BILL ATGMs and RBS-70 SAMs, as well as new Saab Draken fighters and AAMs to go with them. However, none of this was fielded before 1990. BATTLEGROUP CWAS-11 Despite being neutral, Austria was under no illusions that the Army Reconnaissance Battalion (c) most likely future war would be fought against the Warsaw Pact (possibly also including Yugoslavia). The Army was therefore FIRE SUPPORT ELEMENT CWAS-03 organised to fight a defensive war against assaults from Army Artillery Battalion (b) Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Yugoslavia, with extensive networks of permanent fortifications manned by the Landwehr. FIRE SUPPORT ELEMENT CWAS-08 1st Army MRL Battery (b) (b) Normally assigned to the Panzergrenadier Division (I Corps). FIRE SUPPORT ELEMENT CWAS-08 (c) Normally assigned to 3rd Panzergrenadier Brigade (I Corps). 2nd Army MRL Battery (b) FIRE SUPPORT ELEMENT CWAS-08 (d) This was the Vienna ceremonial battalion. The only 3rd Army MRL Battery (b) organisational information I have is that they had x3 companies. I’m presuming that they also had a war role and had equipment to fulfil that role, so I’ve tentatively given them the Jäger TO&E. Austrian I Army Corps BATTLEGROUP CWAS-01 Burgenland Military Command Panzergrenadier Division (a) BATTLEGROUP CWAS-02 BATTLEGROUP CWAS-04 9th Panzergrenadier Brigade 11th Landwehr Regiment BATTLEGROUP CWAS-03 BATTLEGROUP CWAS-04 1st Jäger Brigade 12th Landwehr Regiment BATTLEGROUP CWAS-03 BATTLEGROUP CWAS-09 6th Jäger Brigade 141st Landwehr Battalion BATTLEGROUP CWAS-03 8th Jäger Brigade Niederösterreich Military Command BATTLEGROUP CWAS-04 35th Landwehr Regiment BATTLEGROUP CWAS-03 BATTLEGROUP CWAS-12 2nd Jäger Brigade 1st Pioneer Battalion BATTLEGROUP CWAS-04 BATTLEGROUP CWAS-13 34th Landwehr Regiment 1st Anti-Aircraft Battalion BATTLEGROUP CWAS-03 BATTLEGROUP CWAS-02 3rd Jäger Brigade 3rd Panzergrenadier Brigade (a) BATTLEGROUP CWAS-04 BATTLEGROUP CWAS-02 33rd Landwehr Regiment 4th Panzergrenadier Brigade (a) BATTLEGROUP CWAS-04 CORPS TROOPS 21st Landwehr Regiment BATTLEGROUP CWAS-07 BATTLEGROUP CWAS-04 4th Jagdpanzer Battalion (b) 32nd Landwehr Regiment BATTLEGROUP CWAS-13 2nd Anti-Aircraft Battalion Steiermark Military Command BATTLEGROUP CWAS-12 2nd Pioneer Battalion BATTLEGROUP CWAS-03 FIRE SUPPORT ELEMENT CWAS-05 5th Jäger Brigade 1st Corps Artillery Battalion (M114) (a) BATTLEGROUP CWAS-04 (a) Normally assigned to the Panzergrenadier Division. 53rd Landwehr Regiment (b) Normally assigned to the 2nd Jäger Brigade. They would therefore form an army counter-attack reserve. The Landwehr Regiments meanwhile, would mount static local defence based on fixed defences, with the independent Jäger Brigades providing more mobile defence and local counter-attacks. BATTLEGROUP CWAS-04 Austrian Landwehr Regiment 1980s (a) (a) It is not possible to produce a single TO&E for a Landwehr Infantry Regiment, as virtually every regiment had a unique organisation (on a theme). Each Landwehr Regiment was purely responsible for defending its own locality and the organisation was therefore based on the local defence plan. The Blocking Companies would hold fixed fortifications, while the Jagdkampf Companies conducted ‘resistance’ missions behind enemy lines, the Watch Companies provided security at key locations and the Landwehr Battalions provided a mobile counter-attack force. However, during 2010 we will be bringing forward some exciting new developments both in the form of our web site and a modest expansion in our range of 1/300 scale vehicles. For those wargamers who have in the past purchased their Heroics and Ros models along with their Navwar 1/300 ships, and Naismith and Roundway 15mm figures, these ranges are of course still available direct from Navwar www.navwar.co.uk as before, though they will no longer be carrying the Heroics range.

  • Organisations for the Modern Back to Basics
Organisations for The Modern Back to Basics. 1.0 Introduction This covers organisations for the major armies, and major conflicts from 1958 to 1997, so some strange armies appear, because they have been in action. Even so I have left out such marvellous military organisations as the U.A.E, whose entire armoured force stared in a news bulletin in January 1991, and also the Iranians, for the same reason. The organisations given can be used in conjunction with “Rapid Fire” as well as Back to Basics, but you would have to amend the rules to allow them to be used for modern warfare. The lists do not include the first line supply vehicles, except in artillery units, these should be added if using the supply rules. Although not noted in the rules, Infantry can be resupplied by helicopter flights. In these rules infantry have been given soft transport where appropriate, if no lorries are noted then the infantry don’t have them, and walk. Assault and lift helicopters are listed separately under the battalion which can use them. 2 American Units. There are three sets of organisation for the US army, Pentomic, Road and Division 86. The lists in this section cover all three, but I have simplified the situation somewhat, to avoid too long a document.
