Er du klar at blive henrykt af fire funk-ekvilibrister, der stråler af spilleglæde, skifter instrumenter og besætning undervejs i koncerten samt bryder ud i spontan fællesdans med et lunt glimt i øjet? Den L.A.-baserede funkenhed Vulfpeck er en totaloplevelse. De spiller primært funk-baseret og groovy instrumentalmusik inspireret af klassiske R&B-rytmesektioner som The Funk Brothers og The Meters med afstikkere til soul, pop og jazz. Bandet er notorisk kendt for deres opsigtsvækkende live- optrædener med tårnhøjt oktantal skruet op for entusiasmen, smittende humør og charmerende narrestreger, som efterlader publikum ellevilde. Bandet hylder musikere, de beundrer, ved at invitere dem til at slutte sig til den roterende Vulfpeck-besætning. Flere respekterede og talentfulde musikere har tidligere accepteret invitationen, herunder danske Coco O. fra Quadron, funklegenden Bootsy Collins og deres faste samarbejdspartnere, sangeren Antwaun Stanley og musikeren Joey Dosik, der alle figurerer på kvartettens seneste album Mr. Finish Line. Kvartetten består af fire nørdede virtuoser, der insisterer på at indspille deres traditionelt funderede funkmusik lo-fi. Hele bandet er samlet i samme rum med deres instrumenter præcis som studiemusikerne gjorde i 60’erne og 70’erne som back up for bl.a. de store Motown-stjerner. Bandet genopliver gamle indspilningsdyder, men giver dem deres helt eget unikke, minimalistiske twist. De har bl.a. udviklet deres helt eget plugin, der hjælper dem til at genskabe den helt rette rå sound. Siden de fire musikere fandt sammen i Michigan i 2011 har de udgivet fire ep’er, tre album, drillet streaming-giganten Spotify ved at udgive et helt album uden lyd, spillet på Bonnaroo og The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Deres seneste album Mr. Finish Line opnåede en topplacering på Billboards R&B Albums Chart, godt hjulpet på vej af en yderst dedikeret skare af fans online. Alt dette uden på noget tidspunkt at underskrive en kontrakt med et pladeselskab. While it imbues many of the B qualities of Lubalin’s team of lettering artists’ signature styles, it’s a completely new design. Alexander and I agreed it was simply too expected to ape an existing typeface, so we tried to create something new. The year prior, I had done some lettering for the Typographics conference, that slowly snowballed into several other ideas of typefaces. The most basic of those was something generically titled Ohno Fatface. Without much of a reason why, I started drawing out the rest of the capitals. My thinking at the time was that it might be useful to have a full alphabet for various collateral for the project. Also, numbers were needed in a smaller optical size so I took a crack at those as well. Around this time, DJR’s Rhodedendron came out, so I had a good reference for how a slab treatment could be applied to numerals. This was not the first time and will not be the last time I rip off DJR. I had nothing driving this project except for my own curiosity. I wondered what a lowercase for this super slab design might look like, so I played around with making the slabs absurdly enormous. In all of my classes, I like to talk about the “Counterspace Equals Letterspace” technique for achieving consistent spacing in type or lettering.
