Outlook Racing to an Iowa Conference title climaxed an impressive debut season in 2009, but for coach Joe Dunham, that’s just the start for the Central College men’s track and field program. It was Central’s 12th league crown and the 11th in the past 19 years. Central was 36th at the NCAA Division III meet and has placed in the top 20 nine times since 1993. “We want to continue to push at the national level,” he said. “That’s where we want our kids to be able to get to.” But Dunham heads into his second season knowing work remains and that competition within the league will be fierce. That starts in the indoor season, where Central placed second in the conference last year. Never an emphasis at Central, Dunham and the Dutch nonetheless would like to see more indoor success. “We’d like to make a push indoors,” he said. “We’ve never won an indoor conference team championship before and the guys really want to do that.”

Sprints The 400 meters are the gold standard for Central men’s track and field. The Dutch have made 16 national meet appearances in 18 years in the event, with 12 place-finishes and three NCAA crowns. But Central should begin drawing attention in the short sprints as well this year. Sophomores Trevor Veach and Allen Scovel took seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 100 meters at the conference outdoor meet last May, with senior Mitch Morris close behind, along with sophomore Kyle Wood. Morris is determined to make his final season his best, Dunham said. “This is the fastest he’s ever been,” he said. “He’s about 10-15 pounds lighter than last year. It’s pretty exciting to see.” But the returnees will get challenged by freshman Logan Danko of Centerville, the Class 3A high school state champ. Other top freshmen include Trent Heetland of Ackley, Marcus Webb of Prairie Village, Kan., Shane Weinberg of Plainfield and Ben Garrett of Wilton. “This is the best group of short sprinters Central has had in a long time, from what (associate head coach) Guy Mosher tells me,” Dunham said. Those runners will also compete in the 200 meters, where Wood was seventh in the league last spring. Freshman Jordan Appenzeller is also among those who should excel, along with some of Central’s 400-meter

24 Men’s track and field standouts, including seniors Matt Patrick, Luke Bolander, Jordan Gegner and Alex Miller. Patrick and Bolander finished one-two in the conference 400 meters last year, with Wood fourth. Veach will contend as will Heetland and freshman Derek Beckman of West Burlington. “Trent (Heetland) could come on strong,” Dunham said. “He’s got a lot of hidden talent. It’s exciting to see him blossom. “Derek (Beckman) has shown great determination so far this indoor season and I know he has big goals,” Dunham said. “He is a hard worker and it will be fun to see how he improves this season.””

Hurdles Sophomore Chris Henely was third in the league in the 110-meter hurdles. Junior decathlete Kurtis Brondyke narrowly missed placing last year and should be a contender in 2010. Gegner, a 400-meter hurdler, will also try the 110 hurdles this year and the Dutch will get help from freshman Aaron Fuller of Aberdeen, S.D., who is training as a decathlete. “I think we’ve got at least three who could make some real noise,” Dunham said. Gegner was the league 400-meter hurdle champ last spring in 54.26 seconds. He’s a threat for a national meet berth, Dunham said. Fuller will compete as well freshman Ben Fry of New London and junior Andrew Hopper. “Andrew (Hopper) is an extremely hard worker and his commitment to this sport is beginning to pay off,” Dunham said. “He has spent time in the weight room and his times continue to drop. He also brings an element of leadership to this team.”

Middle distance Miller was the conference 800-meter champ (1:52.57) and is eyeing an NCAA berth in 2010. “He’s got a passion to do well in the 800,” Dunham said. A couple of distance runners—freshmen Ben Schornack of Urbandale and Brent Ewing of Cincinnati, Iowa-- should be among those contributing, along with sophomores Kenny Kemp, Dustin Draisey and Scott Riedel. Ewing missed cross country season due to injury. “As his career progresses, he may move more towards the 5,000 and 10,000 (meters),” Dunham said. “But at least for indoor season he’ll start in the 800 and the mile.” There are no returning league placewinners in the 1,500. Sophomore Andrew Hamer and senior Cory Fitzsimmons will compete with Schornack, Ewing and freshman John Gonzalez of San Antonio, Texas, who was a team leader in cross country last fall.

Distance Hamer was eighth in the league in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last year. He’ll be joined by Ewing, Schornack and freshman Brandon Clough of Green Mountain are listed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. “Andrew had a great winter,” he said. “His workouts have been very good. He will improve a lot.” Many of those athletes will run the 5,000-meters, where Central was shut out at the conference meet, as well as the 10,000. This year’s group includes distance captain Pierre Taylor, a senior, who is dealing with an injury suffered late in the cross country season, and Gonzalez. “We just hope Pierre gets healthy for outdoor season,” Dunham said. Dunham thinks Vondracek will show improvement, along with Clough.

Throws Sophomore Tyler Crouse is the defending league champ in the discus (166-feet, 1-inch). He was also an NCAA meet qualifier. “He continues to improve,” Dunham said. “He works extremely hard.” Crouse was also fourth in the conference hammer throw while junior Matt Graber was third in the shot put, fifth in the discus and sixth in the hammer throw. Several others should contribute, including sopho- more Phillip Miller, who is competing indoors this year after joining the team for outdoor season only last season, and freshman Josh Fleming of Caseyville, Ill., who made an early impression on Dunham. “Josh worked harder than anybody on the team in the fall,” he said. “I saw him out there by himself in the ring many times. He’s doing a really nice job.” Junior Jameson Rosien heads a group of improving throwers in the javelin. Multi-event specialist Brondyke has made progress and sprinter Bolander is trying the event for the first time. “We’ve got a lot of young guys we just need to develop,” Dunham said.

Men’s track and field 25 Jumps Decathletes Brondyke and sophomore Ethan Miller are big point-producers in the jumping events. Miller was second with Brondyke third in the league long jump, Brondyke was third with Miller fifth in the triple jump last year and Miller was third in the high jump. Brondyke was fourth nationally in the long jump in 2008. Junior Shane Hallengren was fourth in the conference long jump last year. Sophomore Phil Heisterkamp is in the mix along with Morris, a sprinter who is new to the event. “We felt with Mitch’s speed, he should be able to do well in the long jump and triple jump,” Dunham said. “I think it’s been good for him. Having some other events to think about kind of relaxed him.” Miller and Brondyke were followed in the high jump by sophomore Nick Vance in fifth and Gegner in sixth. Miller was fourth in the nation and Dunham thinks Brondyke is a potential indoor national qualifier while the Dutch should also get a lift from freshman Jordan Marks of Panora. “Jordan went 6-6 in high school and is very talented,” Dunham said. Fuller is only a freshman but may be Central’s top hope in the pole vault, after clearing 14-2 in high school. “He’s going to train for the multievents but pole vault will be his focus,” Dunham said. Sophomore Clint Faust and senior Zach Marks are also back. “It’s exciting see their passion,” Dunham said.

Decathlon Brondyke, last year’s team MVP, earned all-America honors in the decathlon after winning the confer- ence title, finishing fifth with 6,809 points. “He continues to improve every year,” Dunham said. Miller returns after finishing second in the league and 13th at the NCAA meet in his rookie season. Meanwhile Fuller also shows promise as he attempts his first season in the decathlon. While Central looks to make a run at another conference team championship, Dunham views Loras, Simpson and Wartburg as title threats. “There are a lot of great teams in the conference,” Dunham said. Dunham sees a number of Dutch athletes with NCAA meet potential. He’s hopeful of a return trip in the 4x400-meter relay and thinks Central has a shot of qualifying in the 4x100 as well. Brondyke could make it in the high jump and long jump as well as the decathlon. Other possibilities include Henely in the 110-meter hurdles, Crouse in the discus and hammer throw, Graber in the shot put, Miller in the 800-meters, Gegner in the 400-meter hurdles and Patrick and Bolander in the 400-meters. Dunham thinks Scovel and Danko could surprise in the 200-meters. A big advantage for the Dutch is Dunham’s staff, he said. Mosher is nationally known for his work with the multi-events, Fyfe is a distance veteran with cross country head coaching experience, Pingel is also knowledgeable in the multi-events and is a pole vault specialist and within the past year the Dutch have added talented young assistants Scott Tjeerdsma (sprints, hurdles, jumps), Allan Walz (throws), Clint Larson (throws), Tyler Schiferl (pole vault) and Bryan George (middle distance). George was on the staff previously and returned after two years as a graduate assistant at Illinois State. “I can’t say enough about our coaching staff,” Dunham said. Dunham said he’s fortunate that the program he inherited a year ago is primed to return to the national stage. “I have to credit (former coach) Kevin Sanger,” Dunham said. “He really left the program in great shape. That’s a testament to how hard he worked. We’re not far away from where we want this program to go.”
