The third Min icon (short for Minneapolis Science Fiction Convention) will be held April 3-5, 1970, at the hotel Dyckman in downtown Minneapolis. So? Well, seeing that you've asked what a science fiction convention is like, we'll try to tell you. It’s always been our opinion that a science fiction convention should be a fun-filled thing. The past two we've run have been just the sort of bubbling, wonderful events that make a good science fiction con, it's a time to meet new people, to talk to the professional authors and get their autographs, a time to go to parties and do more of the same. There's the programming too, however: there will be panels with many famous science fiction and fantasy writers on them, plus movies, auctions, the art show, and the book-seller’s room (where you might run into some very good bargains on old and rare SF magazines and books). In short, there’s so much of interest going on at one of these things, you have to be in at least three places at once to see everything that's happening. We've tried to plan a fun con — we hope you’ll enjoy it! ! ! The Star Trek phenomenon was also growing, with its profitability being an attractive selling point. In 1994, Viacom purchased Paramount Communications, and expanded the control over its rights by offering licences to the title of Official Star Trek Club for countries outside of the United States, as well licences for numerous commercially sold items At the time they were in negotiation with the Microsoft Corporation to establish an on-line community space for Star Trek to attract the expanding internet fan presence, and relaunching Simon & Schuster’s Pocket Books which was part of Paramount Communications, as its sole source of Star Trek fiction, and had organised to launch the Star Trek Omnipedia, a CD produced by Simon & Schuster Interactive. A new Star Trek series, Voyager, was about to appear, and marketing-wise, it was a good time to expand their presence commercially, launch the new website, and organise the fans through Official Star Trek Clubs, feeding them new merchandise, and the new website.

Two years ago when I started planning out this guest list I never actually thought I would get every one. I am very excited about this convention and have been for quite some time. We have a great convention set up for your enjoyment. Our Guests of Honor each have connections of a sort with one or more of the other Guests. For example Tom publishes Brandon’s books, Michael’s art has been on both Brandon and Larry’s covers, Adam is Jane’s son and they’ve written books together and Tom and Michael have been friends for years. Did you know four have previously been Guests at Minicon, with Jane the year before and the year after Larry was Guest, also Adam met his wife here. If you want to have a more intimate setting with one of our Guests there is limited seating for kaffeeklatschen, bierklatschen and a literary tea, so make sure you sign up at Registration. When a convention reaches 50 it must have some history, so be sure to stop by the dealers room and check out the tables of memorabilia from previous conventions. While you’re there, check out the Art Show where there will be painting demos all day Saturday. You just don’t get a better chance than this to watch an artist at work.
