PDX Jazz, the presenting organization of the Festival, turns 10 this year. To celebrate, we’ve invited back a select W number of our favorite artists who have joined us o and on since our inception in 2004, as well as artists who will perform in Portland for the rst time. We kick o our 10 day festival with Juan de Marcos and the Afro-Cuban All Stars at the Aladdin eater. De Marcos has collaborated with Ibrahim Ferrier, Ruben Gonzalez, Ry Cooder and countless others for the past 20 years. His European tour in 1997 spawned the Buena Vista Social Club. We welcome back the ACAS and fondly remember their last appearance, in 2009, at the Crystal Ballroom. Portland’s own Nancy King returns to the Portland Center for the Performing Arts (she last performed there with Kurt Elling in the Newmark eatre during the 2008 festival) as this year’s Portland Jazz Master. In a program titled “Just Friends,” the Grammy Award winning performer will be accompanied by her two closest musical collaborators, bassist Glenn Moore and pianist Steve Christo erson. When you stop in at one of our hotel partner venues or visit the Art Bar to support local artists, kick back and enjoy a Rogue “Jazz Master” Ale, brewed in Nancy’s honor; you’ll recognize her image on the label! Esperanza Spalding has become a global musical celebrity; we have watched her grow along the way since her rst Portland Jazz Festival appearance in 2008 at the Winningstad eatre. Her love for her home town was unmistakable when she appeared last year to honor her mentor, ara Memory. As our Community Ambassador in 2011, Spalding introduced Chamber Music Society at the Newmark eatre, just days a er winning a Grammy Award™ for Best New Artist. We welcome her back as part of ACS, a trio collective with like-minded colleagues, Terri Lyne Carrington and Geri Allen. ACS will make their West Coast premiere at the Festival, having performed past shows in Boston and New York. In 2004, we presented Scott Hamilton, an expat saxophonist who tirelessly keeps the Swing From the Artist’s tradition alive. He returns to Jimmy Mak’s with a stellar rhythm section of local heroes: Dave Hand to Yours Frishberg, Dave Captein and Gary Hobbs. With the support of our good friend Wayne ompson, who urged us (and Scott) to do it again, this performance should not be missed. Come celebrate the City of Portland—and 10 years of jazz—with 10 days of world class jazz in concert halls, universities, theaters, ballrooms, hotels, restaurants and clubs. We urge you to attend our free and partnered shows throughout downtown Portland, anchored by our education outreach programs, which celebrate Black History Month including Jazz Conversations, PSU Student Stage and the Incredible Journey of Jazz. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

SEARCH BLOG FLAG BLOG Next Blog» Create Blog | Sign In SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2008 Living Colour Live August 19, 2005 – The Bowery Collection MVD Audio Part of a series of the CBGB OMFUG Masters series, featuring shows recorded at the now-defunct Bowery club , Live August 19, 2005 documents the reunited Living Colour revisiting and paying tribute to the then-endangered (and since closed) stage it often invaded in the 80s. Proceeds go the Hilly Kristal Foundation for Musicians and Artists (whatever that is). That in itself might be enough to make this worth spending your moolah on, but to say it helps to be a fan of the band is an understatement. The group is in fine form, having not lost a step during the breakup years – singer Corey Glover in particular sounds as powerful as he did in 1988. But if you’re not already into LC’s politically-charged riff metal, this performance is unlikely to appeal, especially given speed demon guitarist Vernon Reid’s tendency to s-t-r- e-t-c-h w-a-y o-u-t, whether the tune warrants it or not. (Sacred Ground didn’t really need to be 13 minutes long, did it?) But for those who do dig it, all the hits are here ( Open Letter to a Landlord , Love Rears Its Ugly Head , Middle Man , Funny Vibe , Cult of Personality ), plus songs that are either deep album cuts or filler, depending on your perspective. Everything is given fiery readings, with sound that’s equal to a good bootleg.

KIIARA DROPS NEW TRACK & MUSIC VIDEO “OPEN MY MOUTH” – OUT NOW FEATURING DESIGNER CHRISTIAN COWAN AND HIS FALL FW19 RUNWAY LOOKS DEBUT ALBUM SET FOR RELEASE FALL 2019 “OPEN MY MOUTH” SINGLE ART HERE (PHOTO CREDIT: TRENT BARBOZA) NEW YORK, NY (June 7, 2019) – Today, 24-year-old multiplatinum singer-songwriter and “Princess of Chop-Pop” KIIARA debuts a brand new song, “Open My Mouth,” which marks the lead single from her highly anticipated debut album set for release this fall via Atlantic Records. The track, and its accompanying video, gives fans a taste of what’s to come off the forthcoming record – listen HERE. “Open My Mouth,” co-written by Kiiara, Amy Allen (Halsey’s “Without Me”, Selena Gomez’s “Back To You”), Scott Harris (Shawn Mendes’ “Treat You Better” and “There’s Nothin’ Holding Me Back”), Ian Kirkpatrick (Dua Lipa’s “New Rules”, Julia Michaels’ EP), and Joe London (Pitbull, Jason Derulo, Fifth Harmony) showcases Kiiara’s unique ability to blur the lines between genres with her signature vocals and honest lyrics. “Art is open for interpretation, so while some will listen to this song and relate to it based on relationships they’ve had in their lives, for me this song is about the relationship I have with myself,” Kiiara says of the new track. “I’ve struggled with mental health issues for my entire life. I’ve felt silenced, I’ve felt alone, and I’ve felt afraid. To me, this song is about facing these realities and putting it all out there. It feels empowering to open up and finally speak my truth, and I hope in doing so I can encourage others to let their guard down and do the same, so they don’t feel so alone and helpless.” The accompanying music video, directed by Juliana Carpino, features designer Christian Cowan and fashion from his FW19 line along with a special cameo appearance from Austin Mahone – watch HERE.
