BULLETIN 294 TWENTY-SEVENTH REPORT OF THE State Entomologist of Connecticut To the Director auld Board of Cofztrol of the Connecticut Agri- cultural Experiment Stafion: I have the honor to transmit herewith my twenty-seventh annual report as State Entomologist of Connecticut. This report contains an account of each of the activities of the Department of Ento- mology of the Station, including the inspection and control opera- tions prescribed by Statute, and the various lines of research in which the members of the Department staff have been engaged during the year of 1927. SUMMARY OF INSPECTION AND OFFICE WORK 305 samples of insects received for identification. 208 nurseries inspected. 206 regular certificates granted. 206 duplicate certificates furnished to be filed in other states. 2 special raspberry certificates granted. 80 nursery dealers' permits issued. 213 sl~ippers'permits issued to nurserymen in other states. 190 parcels of nursery stock inspected and certified. 230 bales of mountain laurel and other decorative material inspected and certified for shipmenst. m,ooo r~arcissusbulbs inspected and certified. 259 shipments of seed corn inspected and certified. 34 orchards and gardens examined. 31 shipments, containing 321 cases, 3,229,915 plants, imported nursery stock inspected. 22 shipments, or 70 per cent, found infested with insects or plant dis- eases. 803 apiaries, ccntaining 8,133 colonies, inspected. g apiaries and 23 colonies found infested with European foul brood. 25 apiaries and 57 colonies found infested with .4mcrican foul brood. 3,336 letters written on official work. 789 circular letters sent out. 355 post cards. 51 reports to Federal Horticultural Board. 2,146 bulletins, etc., mailed on request or to answer inquiries. 86 packages sent by mail or express. 62 lectures and addresses at meetings.     ENTO-041 5-15 WALNUT CATERPILLAR Bill Ree, Extension Program Specialist II–Entomology and Marty Jungman, Extension Agent–IPM, The Texas A&M University System The walnut caterpillar feeds on a wide range of woody shrubs and deciduous trees in the walnut family (Juglandaceae). Its primary hosts include pecan, black walnut, English walnut, Japanese walnut, Persian walnut, butternut, and hickory. The walnut caterpillar, Datana integerrima (Grote and Robinson), is native to North America and ranges from the eastern United States to as far west as Minnesota, Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. Biology The walnut caterpillar overwinters as pupa in Figure 2. Branch terminals defoliated by walnut cater- the soil under and around the host plants.     U.S. FishFish & & Wildlife Wildlife Service Service Moths of Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge Established in 1994, the 25,000-acre Givira arbeloides Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge Prionoxystus robiniae is a remnant of what was once a much Carpenterworm Moth larger, frequently flooded, bottomland hardwood forest. You are still able to Crambid Snout Moths (Crambidae) view vast expanses of ridge and swale Achyra rantalis floodplain features, numerous bayous, Garden Webworm Moth oxbow lakes, and cypress/tupelo swamps Aethiophysa invisalis along the Trinity River. Expansion of suburbia is often coupled with replacement of native plants by alien ornamental plants such as crepe myrtle, Bradford pear, and Japanese maple. Two projects were conducted for this thesis. The purpose of the first project (Chapter 2) was to conduct an analysis of existing larval Lepidoptera and Symphyta hostplant records in the southeastern United States, comparing their species richness on common native and alien woody plants. We found that, in most cases, native plants support more species of eruciform larvae compared to aliens. Alien congener plant species (those in the same genus as native species) supported more species of larvae than alien, non-congeners. Most of the larvae that feed on alien plants are generalist species. However, most of the specialist species feeding on alien plants use congeners of native plants, providing evidence of a spillover, or false spillover, effect.

LA GESSE And JAMES R.WIKER Adjunct Research Associates Zoology Department Illinois State Museum Springfield, Illinois 217-525-1410 [email protected] I Siloam Springs State Park, Adams/Brown County, Illinois Insect Survey 1997-2000 Introduction Approximately 2000 species of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) occur in Illinois. These species are important to the ecosystem because of their association with the flora of this area. The larval stages are primary plant consumers, and the adult forms are pollinators. In addition, they are a common food resource for many species of birds, mammals and other arthropods. Many species, especially those restricted by host plant requirements, serve as indirect indicators of habitat quality (LaGesse et al. 1996). With the current interest in land management and maintaining plant and animal diversity, a formal insect survey was conducted . During the growing season of 1997 through 1999, 15 diurnal and 9 nocturnal surveys for Lepidoptera were performed over a three-year period by the senior author. Materials and Methods Prairies (mesic to dry), oak- hickory woodlands, oak barrens stream/creek edges and the lake communities were sampled at Siloam Springs State Park . Insects were sampled by various methods. Sampling included capture and release of species easily identified and preservation of voucher representatives to confirm identification of species . All voucher specimens will be deposited with the author's collection or the Illinois State Museum (ISM), Springfield, Illinois .
