What follows are select highlights pulled from our Mid-Year Trend Report. Compositional trends are for songs that charted in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 during Q1 and Q2 of 2018. Data and analytics for all findings (and more) are available in the Hit Songs Deconstructed IMMERSION Searchable Database. Primary Genres Hip Hop’s prominence continues to reach new heights both as a primary genre and as an influence across genres. As a primary genre it accounted for 55% of the Top 10 during the first half of the year, which was up from 37% during the same time period in 2017. In Q2 2018 Hip Hop accounted for 62% of the Top 10, while Pop accounted for only 24%. © 2010 - 2018 Hit Songs Deconstructed. All rights reserved. 3 Influences As an influence shaping the sound and vibe of songs, Hip Hop played a role in 89% of all Top 10 hits, up from 63% during the same time period in 2017. When looking exclusively at songs outside the Hip Hop/Rap genre, Hip Hop’s influence increased significantly as well. It played a role in 75% of those songs during the first half of 2018, which is up from 42% during the first half of 2017. Top 10 (All Songs) Top 10 (Excluding the Hip Hop Genre) Lead Vocal Gender Men continue to dominate the Top 10. 55% of songs that landed in the Top 10 during the first half of this year feature exclusively male lead vocals. Just 20% feature exclusively female vocals. © 2010 - 2018 Hit Songs Deconstructed. All rights reserved. 4 Lead Vocal Delivery Songs that feature a combination of sung and rapped vocals continue to be the most popular, accounting for around half of the Top 10 in Q1 and Q2. When looking exclusively at songs outside the Hip Hop genre, 40% feature a combination of sung and rapped vocals. Key Minor keys continued to shape the vibe of the majority of songs in the Top 10 during the first half of 2018 (68%). However, five of the seven #1 hits from Q1 and Q2 are in a major key. © 2010 - 2018 Hit Songs Deconstructed. All rights reserved. 5 Lyrical Themes Lifestyle surpassed Love/Relationships as the most popular lyrical theme during the first half of 2018, playing a role in 55% of Top 10 hits. However, when looking exclusively at songs outside the Hip Hop genre, Love/Relationships continues to be the most popular, playing a role in 75%. Memes A couple of memes that have decreased in prominence during the first half of 2018 are Snaps and Tropical (our blanket category for Reggae, Reggaeton, Dancehall, Trop House and Latin). In 2016 and 2017, approximately one quarter of the Top 10 featured Snaps or a Tropical influence. During the first half of 2018, they were featured in just 11% and 9% of songs, respectively. Snaps Tropical © 2010 - 2018 Hit Songs Deconstructed. All rights reserved. 6 Song Structure The number of songs that have the chorus preceding the first verse surpassed those that don’t in Q2 2018. This is largely due to the increased prominence of Hip Hop in the Top 10. • New World, New Rules? 6
New World, New Rules? 6 In the eyes of many, the crisis and recession revealed gaping holes in the rules of the global economy. Financial markets are the most obvious target for new regulations, but other areas, too, have come under increasing attention, including tax and even the basic values of capitalism. 6. New World, New Rules? By way of introduction… Is there – to misquote William Shakespeare – something rotten with the state of capitalism? In the wake of the financial crisis, many people seemed to think there was. According to a poll of people in 27 countries commissioned by the BBC World Service, only around one in ten believed capitalism worked well. In just two of the surveyed countries did that number rise above one in five – 25% in the United States and 21% in Pakistan. Unhappy as people were, the poll showed little appetite for throwing out capitalism altogether – fewer than one in four supported that notion. But people want change – reform and regulation that will check capitalism’s worst excesses. That view is shared by many political leaders. In 2009, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Netherlands’ then-Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende argued that “it is clear that over the past few decades, as the financial system has globalised at unprecedented speed, the various systems of rules and supervision have not kept pace”. In the United States, President Barack Obama declared that “we need strong rules of the road to guard against the kind of systemic risks that we’ve seen”. In the United Kingdom, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown said that “instead of a globalisation that threatens to become values-free and rules-free, we need a world of shared global rules founded on shared global values”.

  • Hip Hop, Memes, and the Internet
BY ALL MEMES NECESSARY: HIP HOP, MEMES, AND THE INTERNET MAX TRETTER FRIEDRICH-ALEXANDER-UNIVERSITY ERLANGEN-NUREMBERG INTRODUCTION: HIP HOP ON THE INTERNET The internet influences hip hop in various ways. First and foremost, the internet is a medium that opens up a new space and stage in which hip hop can be performed. This stage is no longer local, but global, which represents both opportunity and challenge. On the one hand, each hip hop artist must assert themselves against countless compet- itors from all over the world; on the other hand, their breakthrough online, if it suc- ceeds, can be monumental in comparison to an analog breakthrough, which is usually confined to a limited area. Therefore, for hip hop artists it is increasingly important to attract attention – as only those who get the attention succeed in this new medium (Prior 2018, Jenkins et al. 2013). The internet’s central influence on hip hop is the inten- sification of the battle for attention – which results in hip hop artists trying new ap- proaches and strategies to gain that attention. One of them is producing their content with an eye to making it as meme-able as possible and capitalizing on meme dynamics on the internet. In this study, I approach memes as a concept, following the definition of Dawkins (2006) who originally defined the concept of memes in his work The Selfish Gene. Memes are small units of information that are usually very simple and catchy (ges- tures, styles, melodies, or phrases). They are transmitted from person to person by imitation or adaption, replicate and spread very quickly, and contribute to the dissem- ination and formation of common behaviors and cultures (Dawkins 2006).

KIIARA DROPS NEW TRACK & MUSIC VIDEO “OPEN MY MOUTH” – OUT NOW FEATURING DESIGNER CHRISTIAN COWAN AND HIS FALL FW19 RUNWAY LOOKS DEBUT ALBUM SET FOR RELEASE FALL 2019 “OPEN MY MOUTH” SINGLE ART HERE (PHOTO CREDIT: TRENT BARBOZA) NEW YORK, NY (June 7, 2019) – Today, 24-year-old multiplatinum singer-songwriter and “Princess of Chop-Pop” KIIARA debuts a brand new song, “Open My Mouth,” which marks the lead single from her highly anticipated debut album set for release this fall via Atlantic Records. The track, and its accompanying video, gives fans a taste of what’s to come off the forthcoming record – listen HERE. “Open My Mouth,” co-written by Kiiara, Amy Allen (Halsey’s “Without Me”, Selena Gomez’s “Back To You”), Scott Harris (Shawn Mendes’ “Treat You Better” and “There’s Nothin’ Holding Me Back”), Ian Kirkpatrick (Dua Lipa’s “New Rules”, Julia Michaels’ EP), and Joe London (Pitbull, Jason Derulo, Fifth Harmony) showcases Kiiara’s unique ability to blur the lines between genres with her signature vocals and honest lyrics. “Art is open for interpretation, so while some will listen to this song and relate to it based on relationships they’ve had in their lives, for me this song is about the relationship I have with myself,” Kiiara says of the new track. “I’ve struggled with mental health issues for my entire life. I’ve felt silenced, I’ve felt alone, and I’ve felt afraid. To me, this song is about facing these realities and putting it all out there. It feels empowering to open up and finally speak my truth, and I hope in doing so I can encourage others to let their guard down and do the same, so they don’t feel so alone and helpless.” The accompanying music video, directed by Juliana Carpino, features designer Christian Cowan and fashion from his FW19 line along with a special cameo appearance from Austin Mahone – watch HERE.
