The club was established in 1890 as Newquay Football Club, but did not play any competitive games until entering the Senior Cup in 1896–97. They were renamed Newquay One and All in 1903 and went on to win the Cornwall Charity Shield in 1906–07. After folding in 1912, the club was re-established as Newquay Rovers in 1920. The new club joined the Plymouth & District League, but left in 1927 due to the cost of travelling. In 1931 they were founder members of the Cornwall Senior League, going on to win the league and the Cornwall Senior Cup in 1934–35. However, the club disbanded in 1937.

The current incarnation of the club was formed in 1946, rejoining the Cornwall Senior League. In 1951 they were founder members of the South Western League. They won the Cornwall Senior Cup in 1952– 53, 1954–55 and 1956–57, before finishing as runners-up in the South Western League in 1957–58. They were league champions the following season and retained the title in 1959–60. The club won the league again in 1977–78, 1979–80, 1981–82 and 1983–84, before finishing as runners-up in 1984–85. They were South Western League champions for a seventh time in 1987–88 and finished as runners-up in 1991– 92,as well as winning the Cornwall Senior Cup. They finished second in the league again in 1993–94.

In 2007 the South Western League merged with the Devon County League to form the South West Penin- sula League, with Newquay placed in Division One West. They were runners-up in the division in 2008– 09 and then champions in 2011–12, earning promotion to the Premier Division. Following league reorgan- isation at the end of the 2018–19 season, the club were placed in the Premier Division West. The club have played at Mount Wise on Clevedon Road since 1922, when Newquay Urban District Council leased the site to the club. Floodlights were erected in the 1980s and inaugurated with a friendly match against West Bromwich Albion. The club's record attendance of 3,500 was set for a friendly match against Manchester City on 14 July 1998, with the visitors winning 6–0.

Hello and a big Newquay welcome to Godolphin Way for todays encounter with Penzance. Yes, that’s right, Godolphin Way. The game was originally scheduled to be away, but some problems with the Penlee Park changing rooms meant the switch was made to play at our place. But Storm Ellen came and she de- cided that not having a home game since the beginning of March wasn’t enough, so she kicked off with our floodlights and won. Therefore, I must give a big thank you to Tania Semmens of The G for offering us the use of Godolphin Way so that we could get the game on. Well, what a farce this year has been with Covid-19 which has made things very difficult for all non-league clubs, however I am sure there are far more worrying things to take into account and we hope that as many of you as possible are staying safe in these unprecedented times. If you are struggling mentally, then feel free to contact the club where there will always be somebody to listen to your concerns and offer you support. Towards the back of this programme is a piece on Billy Kee, the former Accrington Stanley player who has suffered severely from mental health issues for much of his playing career. It shows that mental health can effect anybody, but also gives hope that you can come out of it. As a club we are aiming to become a community hub that is available to all, in recent years the town has fallen out of love with the club and it is up to us, a brand new committee to change our image which has suffered strongly because of this. It won’t happen overnight, but we have assembled a very talented team behind the team to move us forward. Watch this space.

GROUND REGULATIONS Admission and the right to remain within the ground is on the condition that the spectator shall not com- mit the following: 1. Use obscene or abusive language or persistent swearing. 2. Being drunk or under the influence of drugs. 3. Making vulgar gestures. 4. Using terms of abuse, racial or otherwise. 5. Entering the field of play during the game. 6. Pyrotechnics and Flares are strictly forbidden. Any person found in possession of such items will be ejected and reported to the Police. It gives me enormous pleasure to welcome you to our first home game of the 2020/21 season, all be it across town at Godolphin Way. I would like to personally thank everybody at the G for allowing us to use their ground as a temporary home whilst our storm damaged floodlights are repaired. It doesn’t rain, it pours, as if Covid-19 wasn’t enough, Mother Nature decides we don’t need to return to Mount Wise for just a little bit longer. Nevermind, what’s another month amongst friends? We carry on and continue to prepare the club and team for the season ahead. There has been so much going on at the club, you will hardly recognise the clubhouse on our return home. Everybody has worked so hard behind the scenes, it can only bode well for the future.

Pre-season has gone well for us and the results have been good, although we would have liked to have played higher league opposition to get us prepared better for the season. However, due to the time con- straints placed on us by the Covid-19 pandemic and the short time it gave us to prepare we could only pitch ourselves against lower league clubs closer to home. Still, it gave me a chance to look over the play- ers and see the areas we need to work on in preparation for the competitive fixtures, starting today against Penzance. We have retained the majority of the squad from last season, with only Justin Miles and Jacob Grange departing for Perranwell and Godolphin Atlantic respectively. We welcome Jim Hilton and Ash Bradshaw onto the Coaching Staff to replace Craig Ainslie who left at the tail end of last season.

Our aim for this season is to try and break into the top 6 and have a good cup run. We are under no illu- sions of how tough it will be with St Blazey, Helston Athletic and Bodmin Town recruiting heavily in pre- season. However, we are pleased that we have a squad of lads that are from Newquay and who have re- mained loyal to their hometown club despite the potential lure of more money from the big spenders. On and off the pitch the club has moved forward and we hope the results will reflect the effort everybody has put in. I am sure you will enjoy some great football this season, stick with us and watch us improve all round. Jack Bray-Evans

When did you join Newquay? I joined Newquay when I was 16 years old and have been here ever since. Tell us a bit about your Football Career: My youth career was shared between playing for Plymouth Ar- gyle youth teams and Newquay youth teams. I have then had my whole adult career in local football where I have played at Newquay from the age of 16-25. I’ve also represented the county at under 18 level where I was Cornwall player of the season in my final season at Under 18s with the county football team, representing the county was a great experience and was also great fun. What are your hopes for Newquay this season? My hopes for the season are 100% focussed on winning a trophy. A good cup run or final would be amazing for the team and it is something I think is very achiev- able. We have the best group of lads I’ve ever played with since joining the club and if we can keep every- one fit I really think we could push for a honours. What are your personal goals for the season? My personal aim is to finish as top goalscorer again, having been so the last 3 seasons. I also want to be a large contributor to the teams success in the league and cups. I’d love to be one of the leagues top scorers as well if I can stay fit. With this squad, I think it is very realistic target. What’s the vibe like around the club at the moment? The vibe is good, we are very ready to get going. Tell us a bit about yourself (Interests, background, family etc): My interests outside of football are keep- ing fit in the gym along with following most sports, playing golf occasionally and drinking too much alco- hol on the weekends. I love spending time with my family and I’ve just found out that I’ve got a little girl on the way, so it’s going to be a hectic year ahead I’m sure. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself: I have represented the county at golf (not that interesting I know but I couldn’t think of anything haha). Club you support: I’m not a die hard, fan but I follow Sheffield United because of my family and Man Unit- ed because practically all my mates support them (They would Jack, it’s only us Mancunians that don’t). As the new era begins at Newquay AFC, we think about where we would like to see this great club go. Our first goal is to balance the books, this will secure our future and help us to create the foundations that will see the club grow over the coming months and years. We know full well the town have fallen out of love with the Peppermints, but ours isn’t to apportion blame, ours is to rebuild the trust in our community. It may take time to get where we want to be, it may take time for people to come back to us, but we can assure you people will see us working hard for the club, for you, our supporters. We have to entice people back into the fold, those that have lapsed or felt the club wasn’t working for them, we must also attract new supporters, those that have never really thought about us before, we need to make the club a welcoming place. We promise you, you will see us develop. As a club, we are nothing without our community and we want you to know that we are proud of our community. The work has begun, the clubhouse is currently being refurbished, the floodlights replaced and we are offering competitions to engage you with the club. These things are only possible because we have a committee dedicated to Newquay AFC and the town. The players believe in the club and back themselves to deliver, they are all local boys and have pride in their hometown club. All we ask from you, is to follow us, tell your friends about us and most of all, believe in us. If you believe in us, the rest will fall into place. When you see what we aim to achieve, it is your enthusiasm for the club that will sell it to others. At the end of the day, we exist for the community, and we belong to the commu- nity. We hope that once people see what we are working towards, they will support our venture. Whether that is through the gate, using the clubhouse or becoming a club partner through one of our competitive sponsorship packages. We may even inspire people to join us as a volunteer, there are so many roles that could be filled by willing and enthusiastic people. None of us are paid, we have taken the club on because we believe in it, and you, our community. Penzance A.F.C. was founded in 1888, the same year as the Football League was established. They played their first match that season against employees of the Eastern Telegraph Company, based in Porthcurno. The following year, the club was one of the founding members of the Cornwall County Football Association. n the 1892–93 season, the club won the first award of the Cornwall Senior Cup, beating Launceston 5–0 in the final. They missed out on the final in the next two seasons, but then ap- peared in the following six finals, winning three of those matches. In the first sixteen years of the compe- tition, Penzance making ten appearances in the final, winning six of them and losing four. n five of those appearances, their opponents were Launceston, including four years running from the 1897–98 season. In the 1947–48 season, the club celebrated a double, winning both the Senior Cup, and the Cornwall Charity Cup.

Penzance were founding members of the South Western League in 1951, and participated in the competi- tion throughout its existence until it was merged with the Devon County League to form the South West Peninsula League. They enjoyed mixed success in the competition, winning the League in consecutive sea- sons in 1955–56 and 1956–57, and then again in 1974–75, before in later years suffering from a series of finishes in the bottom half of the table. They finished bottom of the league in1986–87, 1990–91 and 1991 –92, but were not relegated from the league on any of these occasions. Upon the creation of the South West Peninsula League, Penzance were placed in Division One West due to their position in the previous season's South Western League, when they had finished in sixteenth out of nineteen teams. After finish- ing eleventh in their first season in the new league, they won the Division in 2008–09, gaining promotion to the Premier Division. They also won the Cornwall Charity Cup, the first county cup they had won since claiming the Senior Cup in 1981.

In 1988–89, to celebrate their centenary year, Penzance hosted English champions Liverpool and Scottish champions Celtic. The match against Liverpool, played in August 1988 attracted a crowd of over 5,000 as Penzance lost 6–0. 2,000 people attended the Celtic match, watching as the Scottish team also claimed a 6–0 victory over the Magpies in March 1989.

Penzance have appeared in both the FA Cup and the FA Vase on multiple occasions, their most recent FA Cup appearance being during the 2006–07.Their most successful campaign came in 1955–56, when they reached the Third Qualifying Round, taking Bideford of the Western League to a replay. They have ap- peared in the FA Vase in every season since 2004–05, failing to get past the Second Qualifying Round.

In June 2012 before the 2012–13 season, the club faced some bad news when the FA refused to allow them to enter any national FA competitions because they do not have toilet facilities in the home and away dressing room, and the referee's room. The loss of sports had a massive effect on me, I mean I am involved with Newquay, Devon Sharks RLFC and Exwick CC. My weekends were a right off. Well, I am nothing if I am not persistent, so myself and a work colleague scoured world news and found that the Belarusian Premier League was still playing and being streamed live via dodgy streaming sites, so we adopted rival teams and that’s who we supported. I followed FC Slutsk (yes, for that very reason) and he supported Minsk because they are rivals. That was okay for a while, but until you have watched Belarusian football on a dodgy stream, you have no idea how bad the game can be. I mean, I once watched a Bury v Rochdale Derby and it was even worse than that. If I had a glass eye, it would have put it to sleep. Fortunately, Germany’s Bundesliga started back, and we could get back to watching some decent football. I can’t say I adopted FC Union Berlin; more so Union adopted me. I had always watched their progress; Union Berlin are a rebellious club from a rebellious city. They are anti-establishment, which is very much where I am at politically. It is like a marriage made in heaven without all the clouds and harp players. The truth is, they have always been up against adversity. Life was tough behind the wall when you were on the Eastern side of it. In the early days of the millennium, the club was on deaths door and Union’s fantas- tically loyal support gave blood to raise the money to keep the club alive. In Germany you get paid for giv- ing blood and it was the supporters themselves who created the ‘Bleed for Union’ campaign and it was that which saved the club. Then in 2008, roughly 2,500 Union fans volunteered 140,000 hours to refurbish their old Köpenick stadium, built in the 1920s. Union play at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei in the eastern neighbourhood of Köpenick. The ground, which is terracing on three sides, holds 22,000. It is small by German standards, but the atmosphere is outstanding. We all know atmospheres are better with terracing, since all seater stadiums, the prawn sandwich brigade have taken over our clubs and football, certainly at Premier League level, means football may as well link with Henley Regatta. Thank God for Leeds United going up, a proper club, with proper fans. Leeds, along with Wolves and Liverpool should bring some real atmosphere to the sterile environment of self-proclaimed best league in the world. Anyway, it is great to be back. It isn’t easy to balance books when there are no games and the clubhouse is closed. We had to cancel some good quality events last season due to the Virus. Here’s hoping things will start to pick up over the coming weeks. The new committee are keen to move this great old club for- ward. A town like Newquay needs a football club it can be proud of and that is the intention going for- ward. I feel as a club, we haven’t represented our community very well for a very long time. It’s time we put that right. You can rest assured we are working very hard behind the scenes. The tired old clubhouse has been refurbished, pop in after the game and see the difference. There is so much more that needs to be done of course, but we are not a club with big money, we have to work for everything we get, both on and off the field. However, I can assure you, we have a very talented committee who have come together from a wide ranging field and all have a proven record of success. Things won’t happen overnight, but the little things will be got right and then the big things will take care of themselves. I hope you enjoy today’s fixture against Penzance. They are a lovely club and the other year a few of us Devon folk watched Buckland Athletic at Penlee Park and were made to feel so welcome by the bar staff, it really was an enjoyable day. I can’t remember the score, Bucks won I think, but I remember the hango- ver the next day. V Opponent Comp Res Scorers
