John Jez is in his fi fth season as head men’s lacrosse coach at C.W. Post. Jez is only the eighth head coach in the 52 years John JEZ history of the program. Th e Pioneers have reestablished the Head Coach strong winning tradition and perennial national dominance of Fifth Season the men’s program at the Long Island University. Team and individual success have gone hand in hand dur- ing Jez’s tenure. Two national titles and a pair of conference championships have come under the watch of Jez. Twenty four players have earned East Coast Conference year end honors, including 2009 ECC Player of Year, Greg Cerar, and 2008 ECC Rookie of the Year, Michael Messina. Jez has also helped his players to earn a combined 24 All-America distinctions, including 10 First Team, nine Second Team and fi ve Honorable Mention selections. Under his tutelage, Cerar and Michael Cama were honored as top players in their respective positions by the USILA. Cerar was honored as the 2009 Lt. Col. J Turnbull Award winner for Outstanding Attackman of the Year and the 2009 Lt. Raymond Jenners award for National Player of the year. Cama was hon- ored as both the 2010 and 2009 Specialty Player of the Year. Jez also stresses excellence in the classroom, resulting in four players earning USILA Scholar All-American honors, including Matt Dimler (2008), Greg Cerar (2009), David Loftus (2009) and Dan Sciulla (2009). Each semester, more than 20 of Jez’s players have been recognized with the C.W. Post Athletic Academic Achievement Award. Th is award is given to student-athletes that obtain a 3.0 or higher semester GPA. Many student-athletes who have achieved a 3.25 or better were named to the ECC Commissioner Honor Roll. In 2010, C.W. Post captured its second straight and third overall national title in a rematch over LeMoyne at M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, . Th e Pioneers bounced back from a halftime defi cit to defeat the Dolphins, 14-9, and fi nished the season as the top-ranked team in the fi nal USILA national poll. Th e Pioneers led the national in man-up scoring percentage and had the highest winning percentage among all Division II teams with a program-best 16-1 record. Th e 2009 team fi nished as NCAA Division II National Champions after defeating LeMoyne, 8-7, in front of more than

Th e Pioneers wrapped up the season with a 15-1 record and a .938 winning percentage, which was second best in the nation. Th e off ense was ranked No. 1 nationally averaging, 15.06 goals per game and they scored at least 10 goals against all but one opponent. For his eff orts, Jez was honored as the 2009 USILA and FieldTurf/NCAA Division II Coach of the Year. Th is also marked the best scoring off ense in the 50-year history of the C.W Post lacrosse program. Th e man-up and face-off units also led the nation in 2009, with the man-up unit scoring 51 percent of the time and the face-off unit, posting a 67.5 win percentage. Th e 2008 and 2007 seasons were also very successful under Jez’s leadership. A veteran lacrosse coach at the high school, collegiate and Frank VITOLO professional levels, Frank Vitolo enters his fi fth season as the Assistant Coach program’s top assistant and defensive coordinator. “Frank is one of the top defensive coaches in the nation,” Fifth Season says head coach John Jez. “His hard work and dedication has continued our program’s winning tradition and without him we would not be at the level of competitiveness we are at to- day. His game preparation is unmatched. C.W. Post lacrosse is blessed to have his guidance and leadership. I do not know what we would do without him.” Prior to joining Jez’s staff , Vitolo was an assistant with the New Jersey Pride of the Major League Lacrosse from 2002-05 and also spent eight seasons on the coaching staff at North- east-10 member Pace University. Vitolo served as the Setters’ head coach from 2000-02 and his team was nationally ranked during that time. In 2010, Vitolo was the architect of a defensive unit that posted a 5.88 goals against average (second-best nationally) and the best mark for a Pioneer defense in over 38 years (1972 - 5.30 goals against average). Under his leadership, Joe Blount (First Team), Richard Schmidt (First Team) and Bryan Leon- ard (Second Team) all earned USILA All-America honors. In 2009, Vitolo’s defensive unit posted a 6.199 goals against average (second-best nationally). C.W. Post held 15 of its 16 opponents to fewer than 10 goals. Under Vitolo’s guid- ance, defensemen Bryan Leonard, Joe Blount and Jon Kology earned USILA All-America honors. In addition, Vitolo was bestowed the 2009 Division II As- sistant Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association for his outstanding work in helping the Pioneers capture their second national title. In both 2007 and 2008, Vitolo’s defensive units ranked among the best in NCAA Division II statistical categories. Th e 2007 team was fourth in scoring defense (7.85 goals per game) and fourth in man-down defense (81.9 percent stop- page). His 2008 defense was fi fth in scoring defense (6.79 goals per game) and eighth in man-down (75 percent stop- page). In the last four seasons, Vitolo has coached nine defensive All-Americans at C.W. Post. Among those honored are four First Team selections Rob Blount (2007), Chase Safarowic (2007), Bryan Leonard (2009) and Joe Blount (2010); three Second Team selections Bryan Leonard (2008, 2010), Joe Blount (2009) and one Honorable Mention selection, Jon Kol- ogy in 2009. A longtime resident of Somers, N.Y., Vitolo spent over

During the summer of 1990, Vitolo coached the Hudson Valley boys’ lacrosse team to a gold medal fi nish at the Empire State Games. He is a member of the Lakeland High School Athletics Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Hudson Valley Chap- ter of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1995. Vitolo received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Educa- tion in 1972 from Ithaca College. While at Ithaca, Vitolo competed in the wrestling and lacrosse programs. Vitolo and his wife, Kathi, are the proud parents of daughters Nicole, Kim, Sara and Katy. Th ey currently reside in Babylon, N.Y.

He has had an instant impact on our program and our athletics depart- ment. He is well liked by our players and is a role model for our student-athletes.” During the summer, Gencorelli coaches the Long Island Express and continues to play in various summer leagues and tournaments. Gencorelli received his master’s degree in criminal justice at C.W. Post in May 2010. He resides in Merrick, N.Y.

Junior Brad DeSouza (Trumbull, Conn.) is hard working and possesses a hard shot and should see signifi cant playing time this year. Des- ouza should be a huge asset to the Pioneers’ man- up unit. Sophomore Matt Riccio (Trumbull, Conn.) can play both midfi eld and attack and Jez is hoping for him to break out this season. Riccio has great quickness and great energy. Founded as the New York Collegiate Athletic C.W. POST 200910 ECC CHAMPIONS Conference in 1989 and rechristened the East Coast Conference in July 2006, the ECC was formed to enhance intercollegiate athletic competition among member institutions and to assist them in integrat- ing athletics into their academic program in a fi scally sound way. 2011 MEN’S LACROSSE David Steinberg - President, Long Island University

Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. Th e son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian

studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary LIU/C.W. POST ADMINISTRATION degrees. He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis Uni- versity as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977. Th e author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His fi rst book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “Th e Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edi- tion, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “Th e Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005. Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others. He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. Th e couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accom- plishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.

Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post

Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008. A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacifi c Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island Univer- sity, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post. As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program devel- opment, admissions and recruitment, retention, fi nancial aid, athletics, student aff airs, public safety, and buildings and grounds. His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and fi eld research op- portunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior. Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philos- ophy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of Hawai’i: Th e Long Journey Back.”

Bryan Collins, Director of Athletics

Bryan Collins is in his fi fth year as the Director of Athletics at C.W. Post. Under Col- lins’ leadership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels.

During Collins’ tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success. Notable achievements include 22 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the 2007 women’s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams.

Th is past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, baseball, men’s lacrosse, softball and women’s lacrosse teams all participated in NCAA tournaments.

C.W. Post boasts many of the most top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in national polls. Th e Pioneers fi nished fi rst in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings for 2009-10, the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ tenure. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and fi eld hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Off the fi eld, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. Among the eff orts since his arrival have been visitations to the St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, N.Y., while also volunteering with other charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the 2008-09 academic year, C.W. Post student-athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service. BRYAN COLLINS BRYAN Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and aca- demic achievements in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program.

During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual student-athlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic success. Th e department also established an Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes’ who receive a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a new state-of-the art sound system for the stadium. In addition, all the outdoor athletic fi elds have undergone improvements to their playing surface. Th e Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams, received a new sound system as well as a working press row table for media and game operations staff .

A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John’s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, perseverance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifi ce in seeking to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received
