While it is obvious. that these comic books can be used in the classroom as a source of reading material, it is tot so obvious that these comic books, with great economy, simplicity, and narrative density, can be used to further introduce novice readers to the techniques found in narrative and to the terms employed in the study and discussion of a narrative. The output of the Marvel Conics Group in particular is literate, is both narratively and pbSlosophically sophisticated, and is ethically and morally responsible. Some of the narrative tecbntques found in the stories, such as the Spider-Man episodes, include foreshadowing, a dramatic fiction narrator, flashback, irony, symbolism, metaphor, Biblical and historical allusions, and mythological allusions.4MKM1 4 4 *********************************************************************** * Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made * * from the original document. * *********************************************************************** ) U SOEPANTMENTO, HEALD.. • Why Wonder Woman Matters
Why Wonder Woman Matters When I was a kid, being a hero seemed like the easiest thing in the world to be- A Blue Beetle quote from the DC Comics publication The OMAC Project. Introduction The superhero is one of modern American culture’s most popular and pervasive myths. Though the primary medium, the comic book, is often derided as juvenile or material fit for illiterates the superhero narrative maintains a persistent presence in popular culture through films, television, posters and other mediums. There is a great power in the myth of the superhero. The question “Why does Wonder Woman matter?” could be answered simply. Wonder Woman matters because she is a member of this pantheon of modern American gods. Wonder Woman, along with her cohorts Batman and Superman represent societal ideals and provide colorful reminders of how powerful these ideals can be.1 This answer is compelling, but it ignores Wonder Woman’s often turbulent publication history. In contrast with titles starring Batman or Superman, Wonder Woman comic books have often sold poorly. Further, Wonder Woman does not have quite the presence that Batman and Superman both share in popular culture.2 Any other character under similar circumstances—poor sales, lack of direction and near constant revisions—would have been killed off or quietly faded into the background. Yet, Wonder Woman continues to persist as an important figure both within her comic universe and in our popular consciousness. “Why does Wonder Woman matter?” To answer this question an understanding of the superhero and their primary medium, the comic book, is required, Wonder Woman is a comic book character, and her existence in the popular consciousness largely depends on how she is presented within the conventions of the comic book superhero narrative.

  • Iron Man As Cyborg: Between Masculinities by Evdokia Stefanopoulou, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
Iron Man as Cyborg: Between Masculinities By Evdokia Stefanopoulou, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece Abstract Since the turn of the millennium there has been a mass proliferation of superhero movies. From the appearance of the fist Spider-Man film in 2002 since the latest installment in the Ca ptain America series (2016), superhero movies have a tremendous popular and economic success. These popular texts have also a massive cultural impact by articulating their representations and ideologies in a global audience consisting of different national, racial, class and gender identities. The gender issues in superhero movies are often accompanied by the common observation that the great majority of superheroes are men and the rare presence of women is marked by their placement in a supporting role, thus reproducing a patriarchal ideology. Although this phenomenon can indeed be characterized as an excessive demonstration of masculine power and superheroes can be seen as mythical figures of a technological patriarchy, I would also suggest a different approach, an antithetical reading. This approach examines the overstated “technological sublime in human form” (Wasielewski 66) as a sort of divergent embodiment of subjectivity, one that contains the notion of the cyborg as described by Donna Harraway, one containing its own blurring of the ontological boundaries (161), therefore projecting its own existence as a social construction. Deploying this approach, I would examine the gender representations in the Iron Man trilogy (2008, 2010, 2013) not as demonstration of patriarchal power, but as masculinity in crisis, a masculinity undermined by its excessive technological look and its status as a constructed fabrication.

  • The Holocaust and Anti-Semitism in Jewish Made Comic Books, 1963
Why Don’t We Talk About It? : The Holocaust and Anti-Semitism in Jewish Made Comic Books 1963-1989 By Cameron Fontaine “My parents didn’t talk in any coherent or comprehensive way about what they had lived through. It was always a given that they had lived through “the War” which was their term for the Holocaust. I don’t even think I heard the word Holocaust until the late 70’s but I was aware of “the War” as long as I was aware of anything.” - Art Spiegelman1 As Spiegelman wrote in Meta Maus, his parents really did not directly refer to or openly discuss the Holocaust until the late seventies. There was a similar trend in the comics industry. Many of the artists and writers in the early days of comics were Jewish immigrants or born into a Jewish immigrant families. So the question raised is why is to why is no one talking about the Holocaust? Why is there so little discussion of the hardships faced by Jewish immigrants? There are a couple of reasons why these themes do not emerge until later in comics. The Jewish immigrant experience and the legacy of the Holocaust were unpleasant themes not suited for the stringent guidelines of the Comics Code established in 1954. While themes of Jewish identity were discussed under the code they were not openly discussed until the abandonment of the code in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. Comic creators discussed a myriad of different issues through the medium since the first issue of Action Comics.

X-Men, Dragon Age, and Religion: Representations of Religion and the Religious in Comic Books, Video Games, and Their Related Media An Honors Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in International Studies. By Lyndsey Erin Shelton Under the mentorship of Dr. Darin H. Van Tassell ABSTRACT It is a widely accepted notion that a child can only be called stupid for so long before they believe it, can only be treated in a particular way for so long before that is the only way that they know. Why is that notion never applied to how we treat, address, and present religion and the religious to children and young adults? In recent years, questions have been continuously brought up about how we portray violence, sexuality, gender, race, and many other issues in popular media directed towards young people, particularly video games.

  • The Tangled Web of Super-Heroes
Published online 24 August 2007 | Nature | doi:10.1038/news070820-12 Column The tangled web of super-heroes The Marvel Universe has social webs similar to our own, says Philip Ball. In other words, they're sexist and elitist. Philip Ball In which society do powerful males form a dominant, elitist network while females are relegated to peripheral roles? Banish those wicked thoughts. This isn't the real world, you cynics, but pure fantasy. We're talking about the Marvel Universe. This, as any comic-book geek will tell you, is where Spider-Man, Captain America and the Hulk do their thing. As indeed does the Thing. But no, not Batman or Superman — they are part of the DC Universe, and not on speaking terms with the Marvelites. Do keep up. The story so far: in 2002, Spanish mathematician Ricardo Alberich and colleagues in at the University of the Balearic Isle in Spain, analysed the social network formed by the Marvel comic characters according to whether they have appeared together in the same story1. There are around 6,500 of these characters in nearly 13,000 Marvel comic books, so there's plenty of evidence to reveal patterns and trends. Indeed, even the world of classical Greek and Roman mythology looks puny by comparison, with just 1,600 or so named characters in its pantheon. What's more, the Marvel Universe has as many cliques as Hollywood — particularly since the relaunch of Marvel Comics in 1961, which spawned well-known gangs such as the Fantastic Four and the X-Men.
