There were multiple marriages right before and after the marriage equality law went into effect in Illinois June 1. Some people converted their civil unions to marriages, and others married for the first time. In addition to private ceremonies, there were a few big public celebrations, including at the Field Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Unity in Chicago, United Latino Pride, MINI of Chicago and at Kathy Osterman Beach on the North Side. Representatives from Equality Illinois, The Civil Rights Agenda and Illinois Unites for Marriage lambdalegal.org/ilmarriagefaq held a press conference June 2 to raise ques- tions on Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner’s stance on same-sex marriage— or lack thereof. At a November Tea Party speaking engage- ment in Quincy, Illinois, Rauner, who has usu- ally tried to frame himself as a social moderate, said that he would have vetoed the Religious CONGRATULATIONS, Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act since he thought it was an issue that should have been put to voters in a referendum. Although marriage equality became the law NEWLYWEDS! of the land June 1, and has been available to Illinois residents in several counties since February, marriage advocates now want to call attention to those comments, as well as point out what they see as troubling associations Rauner has made. “Gov. Quinn has not just fought for marriage rights—he has used every tool in his arsenal Patrick Bova & Jim Darby to help us pass the marriage-rights bill,” said Bernard Cherkasov, CEO of Equality Illinois. “On Lead Plaintiffs in Darby v. Orr the other hand, Bruce Rauner has used every opportunity to express his opposition to mar- riage for same-sex couples, going so far as to say that he would veto marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples, even though it provides crucial protections for gay and lesbian couples … and that is shameful.” Jim Bennett, chair of the Illinois Unites for Marriage Coalition, added, “We’ll never know where Bruce Rauner stands on this issue, or any issue, because he just usually says what’s most convenient. In April of last year, when he was pushed to weigh in—on what’s really one of the biggest civil rights issues of our genera- tion—he ultimately decided that he wasn’t for it or against it. So we’re just to assume that it doesn’t matter to him, but it matters to us and it matters to our community.” Anthony Martinez of The Civil Rights Agenda said the announcement was spurred by Rauner’s May 30 endorsement from GOProud, a Califor- nia-based group for gay Republicans. (Capitol Fax later reported that GOProud has dissolved.) “Interestingly, the one organization that was not part of our mass efforts to win marriage for our gay and lesbian citizens in Illinois was the one group that Bruce Rauner now claims has endorsed him,” noted Bennett. “In fact, we’re not even sure that group was active [then], but we know for a fact that that group was not in Illinois when we were fighting for marriage equality.” Rauner was asked by Carol Marin on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight in June 2013 whether he was

Rev. Heidi Alfrey, the church’s senior minister, officiated the cer- emony for forty same- and opposite-sex couples. Among them were couples making commitments without legal documentation and married couples renewing their vows. “This is a huge celebration of love....Unity was started over 100 years ago, based the idea that God is not outside of us judging but inside of us and is of love and life.” David Viggiano, chief organizer of the event, welcomed the cou- ples as they came in one by one, some with children. Hundreds of people watched on from the sidelines, under beautiful skies. Vig- giano gave the following breakdown for couples at the event: 19 Lesbian, 9 gay and 12 straight; 15 were legally wed [either for the first time or had a civil union transferred to marriage--9 lesbian and 6 gay]; 25 renewed vows or expressed commitment: (10 lesbian, 3 gay and 12 straight). Tracy Baim, publisher of Windy City Times, spoke of the long struggle leading to this day. “This is an amazing day. I’m able to lock in and focus mainly on basketball and I think that’s really going to help me out a lot this year.” Griner, shortly before the 2013 season, came out as a lesbian and also revealed that she was bullied as a child. This spring, Griner revealed a lot more personally with her coming-of-age autobiography, titled, In My Skin: My Life On And Off The Basketball Court. She co-wrote the book with Sue Hovey. “I’m definitely more comfortable this year. So my confidence is up, I’m not walking on egg shells. You know, not knowing what’s going to happen and what to expect,” Griner said. “I know [now] what’s going to happen, I know what to expect, I know what playoffs are like. So just me being comfortable, I think is going to help me out, because when you have confi- dence on the court that means everything. You don’t want to be nervous and worrying about the next thing when you’re on the court – you just want to be free and just play.” Griner and the Mercury opened their season May 17 against Seattle. Phoenix plays in Chi- cago against the Sky on Wed., July 2, while the Sky travel to Arizona July 11. “I expect [a] championship,” this season, Griner said. “We went to the Western Confer- ence Finals last year and that was good, but that was not what we set out for. We set out to get to the Championship and win it, and that’s my goal again this year. For us to do that … I normally don’t have personal goals, honestly, normally my goal is to win a championship, but, I’m trying to average a double-double. Coach kind of challenged me to that, so if I set that as one of my goals that will definitely help out my team. If it’s a double-double with points and boards or with boards and blocks, whatever it is that will definitely help my team so that’s kind of one of my personal goals this year. “We’re going to be exciting this season.” WINDY CITY TIMES June 4, 2014 31 32 June 4, 2014 WINDY CITY TIMES WNBA Pride: A league-wide initiative By Ross Forman With COVERGIRL presenting, the 12-team WNBA now offers a new national platform cel- The WNBA has long been a popular sporting ebrating inclusion and equality, while com- option for the LGBT community, particularly bating anti-LGBT bias, Richie announced May lesbians.
