Tackling Covid-19 - Successful Strategies 11 EDITOR’S NOTE

Namaste,

September brings with it a special day to celebrate our spiritual and academic teachers. In India, Guru Purnima is traditionally marked as a day to honour teachers and the birthday of the second president Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (5th September) is also celebrated as Teacher's Day since 1962. On this special day, we celebrate and honour all our teachers, sadhakas as well as volunteers for their special contributions not only to The Yoga Institute and Yoga, but also to the society.

While all of us are still dealing with Covid-19 and simply waiting for the pandemic to end, our best hope is to start preparing to live with it. Work from home, wearing masks, sanitising hands frequently and social distancing are just a few of the measures that play a crucial role in this new way of living life. Hence the need for Yoga is more signicant than ever. The ancient Indian practice and its healing benets is not only helping a large number of patients across the globe to defeat disease but is also aiding in tackling the fear of Coronavirus. Moving above and beyond the barriers of race, colour, gender and faith discrimination, Yoga has emerged as an uplifting force for humanity in this testing time.

The Yoga Institute also pays tribute to Founder, Shri Yogendraji, on his death anniversary. An epitome of wisdom and simplicity, he has left an indelible mark in the eld of Yoga. His relentless quest for spreading the awareness of Yoga continues to inspire millions of yoga enthusiasts. Referred to as the Father of Renaissance and an expert at simplifying Yoga, in this edition, he compares the mind-space with physical space to help us understand the management of our mind.

Psychological Consequences of the Pandemic

ike many, I would have been very angry too to see Mumbaikars so reckless and undisciplined. They came Lout in hordes in July when the partial lockdown was lifted, without maintaining 'social distancing,' nor wearing masks. Shocking indeed but then how do we analyze it and what are the solutions?

Well, do we view this behavior as right and wrong, rational and irrational, high-risk behavior or see it through the prism of psychosocial consequences in the pandemic? My attempt here is to view it through the mental health telescope. The sudden rush of people all around had psychosocial origins.

What is 'fatalism'? It is dened as 'the belief that all events are predetermined and therefore inevitable', or 'a submissive attitude to events resulting from a fatalistic attitude.' The COVID 4) A large number of Mumbaikars wants to go back to work. The scenario is a different ball game. Yoga meets Dance Terence Lewis

The International Yoga Day at the Yoga Institute this year was an amazing affair. It hosted a number of successful professionals from varied elds sharing the important role Yoga has played in their lives. One such of our esteemed guests was Terence Lewis, who is known for his poetic and graceful dance choreographies. He explained why Yoga is so central to his dance academy and personal life. He also explained his association with The Yoga Institute and posed questions about the importance of mind over matter. This interesting discussion between Terence and Dr. Hansaji, compered by RJ Anmol was a real treat to everyone who was listening.

“Hansaji reminded me how we have a special 'namaskar' dance movement that my students greet her with. It just portrays the gratitude and gracefulness that we have at the heart of our teachings. After all, the relationship between a Guru and his disciple is interdependent. Both support each other to become great. I am often asked why Yoga is such a central mandate in my dance academy. I always say that it brings a certain sense of calmness in a highly competitive eld like dancing. Our focus is more on the relaxation of mind and the breath.

I am extremely grateful to The Yoga Institute for teaching my students true Yoga and enabling them to become more centered individuals. Indeed, The Yoga Institute uniquely teaches its students to bring feelings in the physical asanas, be it the feeling of jnana or dharma. It also teaches them to be consciously aware of their emotions and practice detachment or vairagya from the material world. Hansaji frequently advises me that we should always remember that the intellect is above emotions, and this is how we can be 'dispassionately The importance of Yoga grows even more in these highly passionate'. She emphasizes that everyone has the same sensitive times. I am grateful to The Yoga Institute for giving us this opportunity of reaching out to the masses through this innovative Suryasana Movement. TYI has created the perfect platform where seless service to the society, assisting the frontline warriors, and building up your own immunity through Yoga, goes hand-in-hand. We all need to stand together while facing these challenging times, and good health starts from you. Aap t toh India t.

Deepali Agrawal Chief General Manager, Exim Bank

Our association with The Yoga Institute extends over the past ve years. The Bank conducts yoga sessions twice a week for staff members at its premises. It is our belief that mentally and physically t employees result in a more productive workforce. Many staff members have since joined these sessions and benetted immensely. Not only by improving their physical tness levels but also by relieving stress and nding mental peace. They have also inculcated a sense of discipline and transformed as mind and body come together during meditation. During the lockdown, when classes were not conducted, the regular followers missed them so much we continued, albeit online. The breathing techniques have also helped in boosting immunity and making the lungs stronger. We would like to thank The Yoga Institute for its continued support and especially Ms. Swati Bhatt, who has been conducting our sessions without fail throughout the lockdown, with equal enthusiasm. The ‘Exim Yogis’, as we fondly call the regular ones, will denitely vouch for their renewed energy, improved focus, peace of mind and concentration achieved by learning yoga.

Naina Rathod Teacher at The Yoga Institute

Little did I realize that my life was going to change for good when I rst entered The Yoga Institute 7 years back. Since then, I have noticed major transformations within me. Yoga isn't just exercise for the physical body, it is a journey for the mind, body and soul to becoming a higher, better and more evolved version of one’s own self. Apart of improved physical health, yoga has had a profound impact on my mental health, positively affecting all other aspects of life. I have found more focus, balance, awareness, mindfulness. Being associated with Yoga and the Institute has answered many of my ‘whys’ and I have found my calling. To sum up my experience, a quote by Aadil Palkhivala: "True Yoga is not about the shape of your body, but the shape of your life. Yoga is not to be performed, but lived. Yoga doesn't care where you've been, Yoga cares about the person you are becoming. Yoga is designed for a vast and profound purpose, and for it to be truly called Yoga, its essence must be embodied."

Poonam Soni Sadhaka Every day, thousands of children and the elderly battle hunger and malnourishment. With empathy and compassion, The Yoga Institute, in fond memory of Dr Jayadeva Yogendra, initiated “Annam Brahma” as a service to society. Food is served to each individual regardless of their levels in society, without any bias. To many, Annam Brahma is not just an initiative but is their daily means of a healthy breakfast. Many people who come here every day struggle to make ends meet and even afford 2 meals a day. Annam Brahma is a blessing that reects in their eyes; they come each day in the hope of receiving a hot, healthy, pure breakfast. I have been a part of Annam Brahma from the last 1 year and it has become a part of my life now. It taught me empathy, compassion, to give the best selessly without any expectations and above all, the value of food and hunger. I feel so fortunate to be a part of this beautiful initiative.

Atul and Tripti Tandon Sadhaka

“Eternal bliss & blessings” is our experience at the Annam Brahma initiative.

We feel blessed that the Yoga Institute and Hansa Ma have given us this opportunity to work for this social initiative, which serves the basic needs of the poor people. We have a saying in Hindi, “jaisa anna, waisa mann,” meaning the mind will be as the food is. If the food is satvik, then the mind will be satvik. The Annam Brahma team celebrates satvik food every day, which we serve with humility and gratitude. All of us have become one family. The celebration of being Satvik has had a tremendous positive impact on our lifestyle. That’s the way of life.

Asha Chaudhary Sadhaka

The Yoga Institute is a fantastic place to learn Yoga and its techniques to teach are phenomenal. It has amazing teachers and the support of Hansa Maa is commendable. She will be with you any time of the day you need her. Also, the Institute is such a pleasing place in a city like Mumbai with positivity all around.

30 YOGASATTVA Shri Yogendraji - Physical space v/s. Mind-space

Shri Yogendraji has dened Mind ( Chitta ) as all- pervading, subtle, evolutive amalgam of three ingredients ( Gunas ) of matter.

Swami Vivekananda has also compared Mind as all- pervading circumference of a circle considered as an individual with it's centre as his body.

Srimtad Bhagvad Geeta also refers to simile ( 6/34 ) of controlling Mind like controlling Vayu ( space/air ).

As such, comparing Mind-space with physical space can help us in better understanding of managing our Mind.

Physical space encompassing the universe as visualized by Greek philosophers was vast, empty, passive surrounding the earth in which heavenly objects were encircling as if the earth was in the centre and the world was moving around it.

Ever since Newton published laws of motion and gravitation, the cosmos has taken a major shift in it's contents and dimensions as also in understanding the structure of Universe as a whole.

Physical space, like mental modications ( Chitta Vrittis ) mathematical principles and as such, they predict and is now considered as incessantly governed by gravitation discover natural laws by solution of equations. This is acting like ' Karmendrya ' and electro magnetic spectrum similar to Mystics visualize the reality of Mind-space with providing media for high speed communication, acting their total faith in Absolute. like ' Jnanendrya '. In every day life, both views are valid and useful. But in Quantum mechanics dealing with fundamental units of spite of high tech progress, one cannot ignore the matter and energy providing resources of energy for intuitional aspects as emphasized by Mystics. sustenance of physical space, like assimilation of bio energy ( ) for sustenance of Mind-space. Survival and progress of present civilization will depend on how we can bring about the reconciliation of these Scientists believe that Nature mysteriously operate on developments.

“As society to be serviceable must not only be evolutive but also seless. ”
