In recent years the HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi has been like a major in terms of the field of players it attracts and this year it is certainly no exception. 3 of the world’s top 5 ranked players feature this week as many consider it the springboard to their 2017 season as they all compete for a cut of the $2,700,000 prize purse. With Rory narrowly missing out last week at the BMW South African Open, a win this week will see the 4time major winning champion back in the number one spot UPDATE – Rory McIlroy pulls out of 2017 Abu Dhabi Golf Championship due to injury. Last years winner Rickie Fowler also returns to the field and is sure to be looking to defend his title on a course he clearly likes. Interesting Facts & Figures Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship – The Facts • The Abu Dhabi Golf Championship started in 2006 and has quickly grown to be one of the biggest events on the PGA European Tour • It has been run since its inception by Tourism Culture Authority Abu Dhabi (TCA Abu Dhabi, formerly the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority), it has been staged at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club as part of the Tour’s Gulf Swing • In 2011 the TCA entered into a five-year partnership with HSBC, the world’s local bank, making it a co-title sponsor of the Championship through to 2015 • Pablo Larrazábal of Spain is the defending champion. Germany’s Martin Kaymer has won the Championship three times (2008, 2010, 2011). Monday 30 November 2015 Ras Al Khaimah brings European Challenge Tour to the UAE in 2016 Ras Al Khaimah Golf Challenge Official signing the RAK Golf Challenge. The inaugural Ras Al Khaimah Golf Challenge will see the European Challenge Tour, sponsored by Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, return to the United Arab Emirates in 2016. The event will be hosted at Al Hamra Golf Club from Wednesday 26 to Saturday 29 October. This is the first time the European Challenge Tour has visited Ras Al Khaimah and will be one of the emirate’s top sporting events in 2016. The tournament, with a prize fund of $350,000 up for grabs, will be sanctioned locally by the Emirates Golf Federation. It will take up a key position in the 2016 schedule as the Challenge Tour’s penultimate event, the week before the season- ending climax, the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final. His ball came to rest on the grassy bank inside the water hazard left of the green. Scott chipped to 6’ 8” below the hole and made the putt to win in back-to-back weeks on the PGA TOUR.
