One experience I had of the slow spool up characteristics of those early gas turbines was in 1960, when I had to ferry Group Captain “Spike” Marsh from Laverton to Richmond in a dual seat Vampire Mk.33 where he was to attend a Courts Martial on some unfortunate airman. He was a large man who had some difficulty fitting into the right hand seat. There was much heaving on parachute and ejection seat straps and some un-officer like language as oxygen and radio leads became entangled around his bone dome. The weather was poor all the way to Richmond and wasn’t any better when we got there. With external fuel tanks fitted under the wings, there was enough fuel to get to Richmond and if necessary using Williamtown as an alternate which would have left us with perhaps 15 minutes fixed reserve. As we climbed through 25,000 ft en route Laverton to Richmond and in heavy cloud, the Spike in the right hand seat clutched his head and complained bitterly of a severe headache. This bitching occurred again in the cruise and I murmured sympathetically. Approaching Canberra at 31,000 ft, I was having my own troubles with precipitation static causing squealing noises on the VHF and rendering the radio compass as useless as the proverbial whatsits on a bull. The Group Captain was getting very annoyed and testily knocked my hand from the ADF switches whilst shouting at me through the intercom to stop the racket coming through the earphones. -

This graph can be used to project from trends. It plots “before” or the year before on the horizontal access against “after” or the year after i.e. at 0, 1881’s data on the horizontal axis is plotted against 1882’s data on the vertical, 1882 (horizontal) against 1883 (vertical) etc… through to 100, which represents 1981. This measurement tool is known as a system of change and made it possible to forecast firestorms’ dramatic increase into the 21st century. The change in firestorm frequency between 1881 and 1981 illustrates system memory in the relationship between before and after. Prior to 1919 or between 0 and 38 on the horizontal axis, the graph is shaped like the tip of a cone. After 1919, bushfire operations increasingly moved away from traditional practices and the graph took on a cyclonic shape. Figure 1 1881-1981 SUMMARY 1. Reasons for the Dramatic Increase in Intense Bushfires or Firestorms Since the 1920s, bushfire management operations have moved away from: • Putting out small fires quickly in extreme conditions. • Hazard reducing, which lowers fuel loads to reduce fire intensity. Instead, government agencies responsible for bushfire management have negatively sanctioned hazard reduction. And, in the place of rapid attack in extreme conditions, bushfire services tend to leave fires to intensify before attacking. Rural areas have become more sparsely inhabited and national parks have increased in size with fuel loads accumulating since the 1920s. -

Evergreen Supertanker Page 1 of 2 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Will the Evergreen Supertanker replace the existing aerial firefighting fleet? The Supertanker is just another tool in the aerial firefighting toolbox. It is not intended to replace helicopters or all the air tankers fighting fires today. How much does the Evergreen Supertanker drop? The Supertanker has 24,000 gallons of tank space onboard. This represents more than seven times the drop capability of the largest current aerial firefighting aircraft in use today, the P3. The Evergreen Supertanker also has the capability of performing segmented drops in quantities greater than or equal to the P3. Does the manufacturer of the 747, Boeing, support this program? Boeing has worked with Evergreen to support the preliminary engineering studies and certification components of the 747 Supertanker program. Based on those preliminary studies, Boeing supports the concept and capability of the 747 to perform aerial applications. How safe is the Evergreen Supertanker? Evergreen is working with the FAA to assure that the Supertanker is maintained under the strictest federal aviation regulations. This will help bring about the highest standards of safety, maintenance and training to the aerial firefighting industry. In addition, to ensure an elevated level of safety, the Evergreen Supertanker is outfitted with a flight data recorder able to monitor airframe loads. Also, the Supertanker, even with 24,000 gallons of retardant, is still 150,000 lbs below its maximum takeoff weight capacity. This provides an enhanced safety margin. Current airtankers takeoff at allowable maximum certified takeoff weight, leaving no margin for error. The weight of a fully loaded Supertanker aircraft is still below the maximum landing weight. -
