The Board of Commissioners is comprised of nine members elected to three-year terms with three Commissioners running for election each year. The board appoints the county manager to administer the day-to-day operation of county government, which consists of eight (8) major departments and Cornerstone Behavioral Health Hospital of Union County in Berkeley Heights. Union County’s population is racially, ethically and culturally diverse. According to the 2019 Census, about 63.9% of Union County’s residents were Hispanic/Latino, African- American, Asian or multi-racial.
