Abstract American Vernacular: Popular Culture, Performance, and the Question of National History, 1871-1915 by Gabriel Farren Milner Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Richard Cándida Smith, Chair Scholars tracing America’s development into a powerful modern nation between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of World War One have traditionally considered popular culture, and especially popular culture’s depictions of national history, as a vehicle for conveying ascendant socioeconomic ideals of “incorporation” or “Americanization.” In this view, vernacular histories—histories rooted in local conceptions of self, community, and experience—provided a nostalgic reminder of a lost golden age, a diversion from the tasks of everyday life, or a quality to be appropriated and remade to fit prevailing narratives of economic and territorial consolidation and white racial superiority. This dissertation, by contrast, considers how popular representations of national history and citizenship were frequently framed by local conceptions of past and present. Specifically, I examine four performances where groups that were (or imagined themselves to be) regionally, ethnically, or racially marginalized by the nation’s shift to modernity enacted their pasts for national audiences, and the ways in which these performances circulated vernacular versions of U.S. history and culture for a consuming public. Chapter one examines the Fisk Jubilee Singers in their first decade (1871-1881). The chapter discusses their performances of slave spirituals as cultural expression and as political practice in a decade spanning the end of Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow. Spirituals embodied ideals of self-making, piety, communal solidarity, and liberation. The singers, like their slave forebears, used the spiritual to achieve a level of autonomy, cohesion, and pride as they negotiated the contours of citizenship. The performances examined in chapters two and three struggled with the question of the ideal of “progress” in late nineteenth century historical narration. Chapter two describes the emergence of a particular brand of rugged self-making, seen as central to American identity and threatened by the “settlement” of the West, which was enacted and perpetuated at Buffalo Bill’s The Drama of Civilization (1886-1887). Buffalo Bill Cody astonished audiences with a spectacular pageant reenacting the “settlement” of the West, but his presentations also mourned the potential loss of “rugged individualism” with the closing of the frontier. Chapter three considers the ways in which the Hull-House Labor Museum (1900-1910) dramatized a history of immigrant craftspeople as integral to seeing America as a workingman’s republic, the benefactor of a transnational, transhistorical process of self-, community-, and nation-making through indigenous 1 craftsmanship. Chapter four reads The Birth of a Nation (1915) as a highly divisive neo- Confederate history that dramatized a discourse of northern conspiracy and southern patriotism. Ending with this popular film, the dissertation also highlights the dangers of vernacular history becoming normative. Reading these accented dramatizations of national history within and against key social and economic developments, the dissertation argues that popular culture provided a language for registering disillusionment with the shift to modernity, including links between whiteness and patriotism, territorial expansion and “settlement,” and technological and social progress. Dorothy Bulmash, Shirley Milner, and Betty Johnson were great self-mythologizers. As they told me stories of their pasts, my imagination toggled between a Baltimore that was unrecognizable to me in the 1980s and 1990s, a larger-than-life New York and New Orleans, or a tough and rural North Carolina. From these three women I was early schooled in the ways in which people make sense of their identity within the context of both the local and the national community. Newland All rights reserved ABSTRACT Sounding “Black”: An Ethnography of Racialized Vocality at Fisk University Marti K. Newland Through the example of students at Fisk University, a historically black university in Nashville, Tennessee, this dissertation ethnographically examines how vocality is racialized as “black” in the United States. For students at Fisk, voice serves as a mechanism of speaking and singing, and mediates ideological, discursive, embodied and affective constructions of blackness. Fisk built its legacy by cultivating and promoting a specific kind of New World blackness through vocal expression, and the indispensability of Fisk’s historical legacy shapes how the university continues to promote the self-worth of its students as well as a remembrance of and recommitment to the social justice and citizenship journey of black people through the 21st century. The relationships between expressive culture, the politics of racial inequality, and higher education experiences overdetermine Fisk students’ vocality in relation to blackness, in addition to students’ agentive choices to express and (re)form black racial identity. This dissertation traces the differences between curricular and non-curricular vocality to foreground the ways that students resist 21st century forms of racial violence and create paths towards the world they desire. The project opens with an analysis of the role of diction in the performance practice of the Fisk Jubilee Singers®.

Kyriakoudes Dr. Mary Hoffschwelle Dr. Frank Lambert ABSTRACT On January 9, 1866, a formal ceremony opened the doors of Fisk Free Colored School to educate whites and newly freed slaves in Nashville, Tennessee. This dissertation will argue that from the institution’s opening in 1866, Fisk University Library evolved from a passive role of providing materials for students, faculty, and the public to a leadership role in the effort to collect, preserve, and shape the study of African American history and culture. By the twenty-first century, the library was a premier African American historical organization with connections to every sub-field of public history: oral history, archival science, historic preservation, programming, museum curatorship, documentary films, and digital humanities.     Wisconsin Gospellers Jan 2020 Newsletter Jubilee Singers: Sacrifice and Glory (page 1 of 3) Aired Nov 19, 2019 on PBS Resource: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/singers/ On November 16, 1871, a group of unknown singers — all but two of them former slaves and many of them still in their teens -- arrived at Oberlin College in Ohio to perform before a national convention of influential ministers. After a few standard ballads, the chorus began to sing spirituals -- "Steal Away" and other songs" associated with slavery and the dark past, sacred to our parents," as soprano Ella Sheppard recalled. It was one of the first public performances of the secret music African Americans had sung in fields and behind closed doors. "Jubilee Singers: Sacrifice and Glory," produced by Llewellyn Smith, tells the story of a group of former slaves who battled prejudice and oppression to sing their way into a nation’s heart. Eventually, they would perform for presidents and queens, tour the United States and Europe, and establish songs like "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "This Little Light of Mine" as a cherished part of the nation’s musical heritage. The program features today’s Fisk Jubilee Singers performing these and many other spirituals; Dion Graham narrates. Established in January 1866, Fisk taught freed slaves how to count their wages, how to write the new names they had chosen for themselves, and read both the ballot and the Bible.

    THE ORIGINAL FISK JUBILEE SINGERS®, THEIR TOUR AND THEIR MUSIC. 1871 FISK JUBILEE SINGERS® Photo: Courtesy of Special Collections Department; John Hope and Aurelia Franklin Library, Fisk University. The Fisk School was established by the American Missionary Association in Nashville, Tennessee. Following the establishment of the institution in 1866, it became necessary for the administration to seek funding to sustain the educational programs and related matters. George L. White, the school’s treasurer and music teacher formed a choral ensemble with the purpose of traveling around the United States of America to raise funds for the school. With the help of some of the students including Ella Sheppard, Negro spirituals were collected and arranged, thus transforming them into high art forms. These newly arranged were performed in their concerts. The ensemble left Nashville on October 6, 1871 and traveled as far as to the East Coast of the country. The challenges they faced did not prevent them from completing their mission. The ensemble raised enough money to help with the purchase of land for the current location of Fisk University. The ensemble also introduced the Negro spirituals to the world as a result of their tour. The story of each member of the original ensemble is unique and important to the history of Fisk University and the United States of America. Titled Jubilee Songs, as Sung by the Jubilee Singers, it contained transcriptions of spirituals sung by the Jubilee Singers, a group of black students from Fisk University in Nashville, Ten- nessee, one of the earliest black schools to be founded after the Civil War. At the time of publication the Jubilee Singers were several months into a concert tour of the north- ern United States in order to raise money for their destitute institution. Masking modernity: black performance and the struggle for a modern identity in the Progressive Era South. (Under the direction of DR. KAREN L. COX) Centering on the concept of dual identity, my thesis examines how the larger black community in the South adjusted to modernity through acts of masking. More specifically, this work analyzes minstrelsy and jubilee spirituals in an effort to explain what these performances meant for African Americans’ perceptions of modernity in the Progressive Era South. While previous scholars have tended to narrow their focus on the artistic productions of blacks in northern metropolises, I argue that southern blacks did not merely ride the coattails of northern artists, but took an active role in producing, negotiating, and responding to their own cultural representations. iv DEDICATION To my grandfather, Dr. Robert V.
