Communications and Marketing Intern (paid) Summer Job Opportunity

Position Goal: To promote the sport of Australian football in Canada, most specifically Ontario, through effective communication, content production, and delivery and advocacy access across media platforms online and beyond.

General Description The Communications and Marketing Intern will be responsible to develop, maintain and update content on the organization’s social media platforms, website, online store, and Hudl (performance analytics web platform). Working closely with AFL Canada staff and volunteers, as well as AFL Ontario, the intern will be responsible for managing website analytics to achieve website goals, promote sport brand awareness, and in general, increasing participation in our recreational and competitive sport. The intern will manage the organization’s presence on social networking sites including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and similar community sites, posting on relevant blogs and seeding content to various social applications as needed. The Intern will be responsible to film games, editing footage and using this for promoting the sport and/or the athletes.

Qualifications ● Must be between the ages of 15‑30; education in kinesiology, sport administration, journalism, or communications is an asset ● Passionate about the Canadian sport industry ● Sound computer skills, comfortable with G‑Suite ● Strong communication skills: oral and written skills ● Knowledge and experience managing websites and social media platforms ● Experience filming fast action sporting activities ● Ability to work independently, under pressure, and prioritize tasks and tight timelines ● Flexible and adaptable to work within a rapidly changing sport environment ● Able to work a flexible schedule which will regularly include weekends and evenings ● Willing and able to successfully complete a criminal record check (vulnerable sector) ● Knowledge and experience with Australian football is an asset ● Be legally eligible to work in Canada, be a Canadian citizen, or hold either permanent residency, or refugee status for the duration of the contracted position. Must have a valid SIN at the beginning of employment.

Position Location This position is supported by the Canada Summer Job Grant and therefore all activities must take place in the constituency of E tobicoke‑Lakeshore (Ward 3). This position will focus on activities taking place at the Australian football field located in Colonel Samuel Smith Park, adjacent to Humber College, supporting both national and provincial activities.

Position Timelines (flexible) Start date: May 1, 2019 End date: August 31, 2019, possibility to extend through September, depending on youth’s availability.

Hours and expected work schedule: 280 hours during summer months, exact work schedule to be finalized in collaboration with the successful applicant. Activities will regularly include weekend and evening work.

Key dates: August 30‑31 National Team Selection Camp The incumbent must be available to work this weekend. Exact schedule to be determined in collaboration with national staff & volunteers.

Specific Responsibilities Social Media ● Writing publications for the website and social media platforms ● Help to develop strategies and informing decisions with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) general strategies ● Support the promotion and marketing of AFL Canada programs, events, team announcements and news on all social media platforms ● Help generate communication content through relevant channels including email, social media, website, and other communications Web ● Edit, update and maintain content on AFL Canada’s website (SportsTG) and online shop (weebly) ● Research content and liaise with athletes, teams, clubs and leagues across Canada to increase relevant and newsworthy stories for all platforms ● Assist with development of communication strategy including website and other communication platforms Performance Athlete Support ● Work collaboratively with AFL Canada National Team coaching staff, AFL Ontario volunteers, and identified athletes ● Assist with filming practices, games, and skill training sessions for performance analysis by Head Coaches using online platforms such as Hudl ● Attendance at the National Men’s team Selection Camp being hosted at AFL field by Humber College, Colonel Samuel Smith Park, during Labour Day long weekend (1 day minimum) is a mandatory requirement of this position. Schedule to be determined collaboratively with AFL Canada Manager and Northwind Head Coach and Team Manager. ● Supporting AFL Women’s team development by working closely with based coaches and athletes during training sessions and games. Optional: attendance at National Women’s Team Selection Camp ().

Reporting structure Intern reports directly to the AFL Canada Manager of Football Development and works collaboratively with AFL Canada and Ontario volunteer directors
