HISTORY OF SHOGUN Shogun (将軍, SHOGUN) is a military rank and a historical title in Japan. It is the Japanese word for «General», it is made up of two kanji words: sho, meaning «Commander», «General», or «Admiral», and gun meaning troops or warriors. Originally, the title of Seii Taishogun 'SHOGUN' was given to military commanders during the early Heian period for the duration of military campaigns against the Emishi who resisted the governance of the Imperial court based in Kyoto. The most famous of these Shogun was Sakanoue no Tamuramaro (seen on the left) who conquered the Emishi in the name of Emperor Kammu. Andrei Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2016 © 2016 Talia J.Andrei All rights reserved Abstract Mapping Sacred Spaces: Representations of Pleasure and Worship in Sankei Mandara Talia J. Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively). -

Jugurtha was a North African patriot who initiated the Jugurthine War (112–105 B.C.). His guerrilla warfare would inflict embarrassing defeat upon the Roman legions. Authors Brunson and Rashidi quote Graham Webster when he wrote, “The wars of Jugurtha demonstrated the value of the nimble Moorish horsemen who Trajan later found so useful against the Dacians.”1 Black Conquistadors Juan Bardales was a free black slave who participated in the conquests of Honduras and Panama. For the part he played in the conquest of Honduras, he received an award consisting of an annual subsidy of 50 pesos.2 Nuflo de Olano was a slave conquistador and explorer. He was part of the Vasco Núñez de Balboa expedition, along with 30 other Africans, 190 Spaniards, and 1,000 Native Americans when they went through the jungle to cross the Isthmus of Panama. De Olano in 1513 was with Balboa when they first saw the Pacific Ocean.3 Antonio Pérez was a free North African who was a cavalryman and one of Diego de Losada’s most valued captains in 1568. Pérez took part in the conquest of Venezuela.4 He was described as “an old soldier of African wars who had been with the emperor at the storming of Tunis.”5 Juan Portugués was either black African or black Portuguese. He was involved in the conquest of Venezuela.6 Miguel Ruíz was a free Spanish mulatto who was a conquistador in Peru and one of two blacks in Francisco Pizarro’s company at Cajamarca. -

Atkins Asian Languages and Literature This study is an attempt to elucidate the complex interrelationship between gender, sexuality, desire, and power by examining how premodern Japanese texts represent the gender-based ideals of women and men at the peak and margins of the social hierarchy. To do so, it will survey a wide range of premodern texts and contrast the literary depictions of two female groups (imperial priestesses and courtesans), two male groups (elite warriors and outlaws), and two groups of Buddhist priests (elite and “corrupt” monks). In my view, each of the pairs signifies hyperfemininities, hypermasculinities, and hypersexualities of elite and outcast classes, respectively. The ultimate goal of 4 this study is to contribute to the current body of research in classical Japanese literature by offering new readings of some of the well-known texts featuring the above-mentioned six groups. My interpretations of the previously studied texts will be based on an argument that, in a cultural/literary context wherein defiance merges with sexual attractiveness and/or sexual freedom, one’s outcast status transforms into a source of significant power. -

The Tohoku Electric Power Group has been working as one to develop together with Strategies local communities, with its sense of mission as a public utility and its commitment to local communities always kept in mind, ever since its foundation in 1951. The circumstances surrounding the electric power business have changed significantly at different times. At the moment, our Group is experiencing the most extreme changes ever in the business environment. As an electric utility serving Tohoku and Niigata, we should respond appropriately and promptly to intensifying competition in the fully deregulated retail electric supply market and the legal unbundling of the transmission and distribution sectors due to take place in April 2020 while supporting the reconstruction following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The females are described as the first record of S. markewitschi from Honshu Island, because the species has so far been reported from the Russian Far East and the southern Kuril Islands east of Hokkaido Is- land, Japan. The copepod previously reported as Salmincola californiensis (Dana, 1852) from the same host species from the same stream and a nearby hatchery is herein regarded as S. markewitschi. As the species closely resembles Salmincola carpio- nis (Krøyer, 1837), it is desirable to re-identify the copepod specimens reported before as S. carpionis from Japanese salmo- nids, especially Salvelinus spp. Contraction of the formalin-fixed and preserved specimens, especially their second maxillae, of S. markewitschi is discussed. Information on the known hosts and distribution records of S. markewitschi is also compiled. Key Words: Parasitic copepod, freshwater fish parasite, new locality record.
