Skills and talents:

1. Briefly describe your past achievements (e.g. as a board member, employee, volunteer in an international or national organisation or company). You could include details about your role, main tasks, responsibilities, duties etc. Focus on those areas which are most relevant to the work of the ILGA Board. (No more than 250 words)

I have been a public intersex human rights activist for over 20 years and have been involved in intersex organisations since going to my first AIS Support Group meeting over 30 years ago. I am currently on the board of ILGA Oceania, am one of two Co-executive Directors of Intersex Human Rights Australia (IHRA) and the Vice President of the AIS Support Group Australia (AISSGA). For the last two years I have also been one of two representatives in the role of ILGA World Intersex Secretariat Alternate.

I have extensive experience working with others to achieve shared goals, representing and serving my community, working on boards and organisational governance, strategic planning, managing budgets, delivering programs, policy development and chairing boards and committees.

I am very passionate about human rights. In addition to the work I have done as an intersex activist and in my professional life as an Engineer, I am also the first out intersex person elected anywhere in the world, having been elected three times as a city Councillor in Melbourne, Australia, as well as being elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor over various periods in the last 10 years. This has given me extensive experience in chairing boards and committees, and working with others to achieve results as a team.

I very much see the role of Chair of the Intersex Steering Committee as being about bringing intersex activists from around the world together to ensure a wholistic and representative approach to human rights. TO BE COMPLETED BY THE CANDIDATE

2. What is your motivation for running? I have been involved with ILGA since participating in the International Intersex Forum in Malta in 2013, and am very committed to working with other activists and agencies to address LGBTI rights across the globe. My core motivation is being able to make a positive contribution.

3. For those candidates who have been members of the ILGA World Board before, how have you contributed to the ILGA board during your board membership? (No more than 200 words)

I have been one of two Intersex Secretariat Alternates over the last two years, and actively participated in the World Board meeting in October 2018. At the meeting built a good working relationship with other board members, participated in the Governance and Membership committees, provided feedback about the ILGA World Strategic Plan, participated in board discussions, and worked very well with the other Secretariats and representatives from regional boards.

If elected as Chair of the Intersex Steering Committee I will work with intersex representatives from all ILGA regions to ensure all voices are representated at the ILGA World Board, and that we collaborate with other chairs and board members in an open, transparent and respectful way.

4. Any other information you would like to add that you feel is relevant? (No more than 200 words)

In addition to being an intersex person with a lived experience as a daughter of migrants living with an intersex variation, I understand from first-hand experience what it is like being discriminated against (and abused) on the basis of one’s sexual orientation, sex, gender identity and sex characteristics. I also have a non-English speaking background, and am a mother to children I have fostered since the age of 26. I am a passionate human rights activist with significant experience and enjoy the challenge that comes with working on human rights in an international forum.

My experience as someone who was profoundly abused as a child, adolescent and young adult has turned me into a passionate and effective human rights activist with a desire to help others.

5. What can you contribute to the ILGA World Board? (No more than 200 words)

As the Chair of the Intersex Steering Committee my contribution to the ILGA World Board will be as someone who will not only effectively and passionately represent the needs and aspirations of intersex people worldwide, but also someone that can work with other board members to improve the human rights of all LGBT and I people. My aim would be to work collaboratively and respectfully with other members, to actively participate in board meetings, to contribute to a vibrant and representative Steering TO BE COMPLETED BY THE CANDIDATE

Committee and Board, and ensure good leadership and governance on the World Board.
