Job Title: Assistant Technical Manager

Reports to: Technical & Production Manager, General Manager Responsible for: Freelance Staff Key external relationships: Visiting Companies, Contractors and Suppliers

Purpose: To assist the Technical & Production Manager in the smooth operation of all performance spaces and maintenance of technical equipment.

Job Context: Playhouse exists to be a platform for new and emerging theatre companies and practitioners to showcase their work in London.

In doing so it presents a varied programme of theatre from new writing to reimagined revivals in uniquely flexible and dynamic theatre spaces.

It also exists to engage its local community by offering a range of drama related activities that promote learning and social cohesion.

This is a very exciting time in the history of Southwark Playhouse as the organisation is undertaking a capital campaign to raise funds to open two new theatre venues in Elephant & Castle and over the next two years.

As a result of this, the nature of the role is expected to grow and change accordingly. This therefore is not an exhaustive list of duties, but a good overview of the requirements of the post.

Detailed Responsibilities

Production:  Adhering to budgets and financial policies as set out by the Technical & Production Manager.  Attending production meetings, technical rehearsals, get-ins, get-outs and performances as required.  Ensuring visiting companies fulfil their contractual requirements.  Running seating turnarounds in the absence of the Technical & Production Manager.  Taking the lead in co-ordinating the technical requirements of Sunday events.  Development opportunities to act as Production Manager for Young Company productions.

Staffing:  Booking freelance staff and issuing purchase orders as required by the Technical & Production Manager.  Ensuring good working practices and maintaining high production values at all times within the organisation.  Regularly acting as Duty Technician, being on call for any technical issues arising around the building.

Health & Safety:

 To assist the Technical & Production Manager in making sure that all technical aspects of the Theatre’s operation are safe at all times and conform to the appropriate legislative and licensing requirements, including the ABTT Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment aka ‘The Yellow Book’.  To both monitor and assist all visiting companies to ensure they are aware and comply with all relevant Health and Safety requirements of Southwark Playhouse.  Ensuring that working practices throughout the building adhere to the in-house Health & Safety policy and notifying the Technical & Production Manager of any Health & Safety issues which arise.  Assisting in maintaining Health & Safety records such as: PUWER, LOLER, COSHH etc. as relevant to the department as required.  Being familiar and complying with current Health & Safety regulations relevant to the industry and to keep abreast of changes to such regulations.

Maintenance:  Carrying out repair and maintenance tasks, as appropriate, throughout the building.  Supervising outside contractors carrying out building maintenance as needed.  Ensuring that all company tools and equipment are adequately maintained and safely stored.  Being primarily responsible for the weekly premises inspection and dealing with items arising from it.  Carrying out minor alterations and improvements to the Theatre as may be necessary.

General:  Ensuring all backstage and technical areas are kept in good order at all times.  To undertake other duties as may be reasonably required by the Technical & Production Manager.  Participating actively in the life of the Theatre.  Regularly self asses any Training needs and to look for opportunities for professional development.  Staying informed of current theatre technological developments and working practices.

Person Specification

Essential skills, attributes and experience:  A minimum of 3 years’ relevant professional technical theatre experience.  Highly self-motivated with a strong attention to detail.  Excellent organisational and time management skills.  Ability to multi-task, prioritise and work to tight deadlines.  Understanding of health and safety requirements in a theatre environment.  IT competency, specifically MS Office suite and AutoCAD. (or similar)  Strong interpersonal skills.

Desirable skills, attributes and experience:  Desire to work and ability to thrive in energetic and demanding environments.  Flexible and creative approach to work.  Experience with ETC EOS series desks and QLab v3.  Basic carpentry skills/ competence with relevant power tools.  Full Clean UK driving licence.  An interest in theatre.

Recruitment Information and Terms and Conditions:

Key Terms of Employment:  This is a permanent, full time contract, subject to a six-month probationary period.  After the probationary period, the notice period is one month.  Salary: £23,067.69 per annum.  You are entitled to 20 (twenty) days’ holiday annually plus 8 (eight) days for statutory holidays.  In addition, you will receive 1 (one) extra day’s holiday for every 2 (two) years of service, this is capped at 5 (five) additional days.  The working week is 40 hours, with regular evening and weekend work.  There are no overtime payments.
