CALEB CARR, OF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND, AXD HIS DESCENDANTS.

i. CALEB CARR was born in England, in 1624. He sailed to America on the ship Elizabeth & Ann, from London, in 1635, and settled at Newport, Rhode Island. He married Mercy , who was born 1631, and who died on September 21, 1675. After the death of Mercy, he married, second, Sarah, widow of John Pinner, and daughter of Jeremiah Clarke and his wife, Frances Latham. Sarah was born in 1651, and died in 1706. Caleb died December 17, 1695. He was made Freeman in 1655, was Commis­ sioner in 1654-58-60-61-62, General Treasurer in 1661- 62, Deputy in 1664-65-67-68-69-70-71-72-74-78-79-90, Assistant 1679-80-81-82-83-84-85-86-90-91, and Justice of the General Quarter Session and Inferior Court of Common Pleas in 1687-88. He was an owner of much land, having pur­ chased real estate in the year 1658-59-61-62-63, and in 1676 he purchased an Indian slave, captured by some -ettlers at Providence, paying for him twelve bushels of Indian corn. In 1695 he was Governor of the Colony, and met his death in that year by drowning. His will was dated March 8, 1694, and was proved January 6, [696. Issue (by first wife) : 2. Issue (by second wife) : 9. Francis Carr, born after 1677; married, June 18, 1700, Damaris Arnold, who was born May 19, 1684, and had a daughter, Sarah. 10. James Carr. 11. Sarah Carr, born 1682; died Feb. 8, 1765; married Jan. 10, 1705, John Himmet, who was born 1680, and died Mar. 20, 1773. Issue: John, Mary and Thomas, born 1705- 11-12. 12. Elizabeth Carr, married May 28, 1701, John. son of John and Sarah Godfrey, and had Mary, John, Caleb and Elizabeth, born 1702-04-06-09.

2. NICHOLAS CARR, eldest son of Caleb Carr, No. 1, was of Jamestown, R. I. His wife was Rebecca, daughter of Joseph and Jane Nicholson. He held many offires, as follows: Freeman 1679, Ensign 1680, Deputy 1680-85-96-99, Overseer of the Poor 1687, Grand Juror 1687, Deputy Warden 1690, Lieutenant 1692, Warden 1704. His will was dated January 10, 1709, and was proved March 12, 1709. Issue: 13. Nicholas Carr, born Sept. 19. 1679. 14. Joseph Carr, born March 17, 1682. 15. Benjamin Carr, born July 7, 1683. 16. 4. CALEB CARR, second son of Caleb Carr, No. 1, was of Jamestown, R. I. He was Deputy in 1684. His wife's name was Deborah, but her surname is not recorded. Deborah died in 1700. 7. JOHN CARR. fourth son of Caleb Carr. No. 1, was of Newport, R. I. His wife, Waite, daughter of Peter Easton and his wife Ann Coggeshall, was born Nov. 5, 1668. and died in August, 1725. He •vas Deputy in 1705. His business from 1700 to 1707 was that of Ferryman, he and Thomas Winterton, of Jamestown, having secured the rights to same in 1700 by petition. Hannah, daughter of John Stanton and his wife Mary Harndel, who was born Nov. 7, 1670, and died in 1712. i. ROBERT CARR, brother of Caleb Carr, to whom the previous record relates, arrived in America with his brother in 1635. He was a tailor by trade, and something of a sailor, as his sloop was rented at vari­ ous times by Government officials. Freeman in New­ port, March 16, 1641. He owned considerable land, and in 1677 disposed of part of his real estate for £100. His will was dated April 20, 1681, and was proved ()ct. 4, 1681. I ssue: 2. Caleb Carr, died 1690. 3. 2. CALEB CARR. eldest son of Robert Carr, \"o. 1, was of Jamestown, R. I. He married Phillipa, daugh­ ter of John Greene and his wife Ann Almy. Phillipa was bom Oct. 7, 1658, and died in 1690. Caleb was Freeman in 1679. His will was dated Jan. 2j, 1688, and proved March 3, 1690. Issue: S. Robert Carr, born fitly 2. 1678; died young. 9. Caleb Carr. born March 21, 1679. 5 io. 5. ROR.ERT CARR, second son of Robert Carr, No. 1, was of Newport, R. I. He married Elizabeth, daughter of George Lavvton and his wife Elizabeth Hazard, who died in 1724. He was a merchant. Grand Juryman in 1687, and Assistant in 1698-99-1700-01- 02-03. His will was dated July 8, 1703, and prove-'! Feb. 5, 1704. Issue: 15. Robert Carr. 16. Abigail Carr.

6. ESEK CARR, third son of Robert Carr, No. 1. was of Little Compton, R. I. He married Susanna , and died in 1744. His will was dated May 16, 1739, and proved Nov. 12, 1744. Issue: 17. He married, first, Mary Dabney, who died March, 1736; •and second, December 27, 1737, Barbara, daughter of Captain James Overton and his wife Elizabeth. Bar­ bara died in 1794. Dabney Overton Carr, who was killed in bat­ tle in South America while fighting as a soldier of fortune with Simon Bolivar, de­ liverer of South America. Issue (by second wife): 27. Col. George Watson Carr. of Roanoke. Va., who married, i860, Emma Gilmer Watts, of Louisville, Ky., and had William Watts Carr, of Louisville, and Betty Carr, who married Donald McDonald, of Louisville. Col. Carr married, second, in 1876, Pinnie Laws, of Hampton, Va., and had a daugh­ ter Sally, who married Francis Edward Gar­ land Carr, No. 20. and had a son, George Watson Carr. of Texas. 19.
