CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS AND THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) is an Italian-Spanish navigator who gains fame and fortune for sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a route to Asia. He does not land in Asia, but in 1492 he lands in the Americas instead. There, he claims thousands of islands for the Spanish monarchs, who have paid for his voyage. He is generally considered as the discoverer of America. Columbus Day The Columbus Day is an official holiday: many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492. The event is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza in many countries in the Americas, as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain and as Día de las Américas in Uruguay. The traditional date of the Columbus Day is October 12, but in the United States it is conventionally celebrated on the second Monday in October.
