What’s Happening in Mindanao The annual issue of Malawakil Davao News Bulletin for the year 2017 highlights the activities and programs conducted and held by the Consulate Office for the year 2017.

Declaration of Martial Law through the released of the Proclamation No. 216 by the Presidential Palace on 23rd May 2017 due to the attack of the Maute Group in Marawi City; and the successful mission eliminating the ISIS thread by joint effort of Philippines’ law authority.

The Malaysians working, studying , visiting and residing in Davao City are continued to exercised cautions and always being advised to obey and to follow the local law while in Martial Law state period. Every Malaysians is urged to contact the Consu- late should there be any issues that requires immediate attention at all times.

The Martial law in Mindanao is still under it’s full swing and is being discussed and tabled in the Senate as there’s a proposal for it to be Implemented till the year 2022.

The Consulate General of Malaysia is continuingly observing the situational update and is to deliver the messages to all Malaysians in Mindanao.

ASEAN 50 PHILIPPINES 2017 The Republic of the Philippines is hosting the ASEAN for the year 2017 Chapter after a suc- cessful host by Laos on the previous year 2016. More news on page 2.

ASEAN 50 - PHILIPPINES 2017

President ’s home city, Davao, hosted the official launch of ASEAN 2017 under the chairmanship of the Philippines on

January 15, The launch was held at the Davao SMX Convention Center. The Philippines is chairing the ASEAN this year, the 50th year since its founding. This year’s ASEAN theme is “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World.” ASEAN comprises the Philippines,

Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar and Vietnam, Other

ASEAN events this year are the 30th ASEAN Summit in April, the 50th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting and Related Meetings coinciding with ASEAN’s 50th anniversary celebration in Metro by August and the 31st ASEAN Summit in Clark, Pampanga in November.

Among ASEAN 2017’s priorities are people-oriented and people-centered initiatives, peace and stability, maritime security and cooperation, inclusive and innovative-led growth, ASEAN resiliency and ASEAN as model of regionalism. Volume 1 / 2017 January - December 2017

PROMOTING MALAYSIAN PRODUCTS TO MINDANAO MARKET With the efforts by the previous Consul General, Mr Abdullah Zawawi Tahir; the Consulate General of Malaysia continued its commitment to help business group from Malaysia to pursue the ever expanding market of Mindanao particularly Davao City.

A group from Johor and Kuala Lumpur had been constantly visited Davao and met with potential clients, assisted by the officer of the Consulate General of Malaysia; had successfully landed number of contracts and sales order of the Halal products for Davao City market.

Marco Polo Hotels, Chippens and Eden Park are companies that showed interest upon importing Halal products from the Malaysian Company.

Mr Abdullah Zawawi bin Tahir had first received the Johor delegation headed by YBhg. Dato Haja Mydin Abdul Kadeer on May 2015 upon their participation on the Philippines Halal Expo held in Mall, Davao City. Numerous companies was then continued to show their interest on starting business and to supply Malaysian

made products and the Consulate General Office had been constantly assisting them by having sets of meeting with the local related agencies in Davao City.

Mr. Abdullah Zawawi Tahir had left the Consulate General of Malaysia in Davao City as his end of duty had been officiated on 13th October 2016. The task of assisting the business delegation was then handled by the 3 officers left. Two officers from Wisma Putra and one officer from the Prime Minister Office.

On the month of Ramadhan 2017, Mr. Abdullah Zawawi Tahir hosted unofficial Iftar dinner at his premises in Putrajaya for busi- ness delegates whom is in contact with officers returning to Malay- sia on vacation and with the previous officers who was then served the Consulate General of Malaysia.

The Consulate General of Malaysia will continuously assist the upcoming business delegation groups as the interest projection had been increased for the year 2018. Volume 1 / 2017 January - December 2017

CONSULATE GENERAL OF MALAYSIA ACTIVITIES WITH MALAYSIANS IN 2017 The Consulate General of Malaysia office had conducted numerous activities with Malaysians residing in Davao City. The HBS officers normally spent time with Malaysian students having to play sports together on weekly basis. The activities normally are on every Thursday at 7pm to 9 pm. HBS played futsal and badminton at the Crocodile Park Clubhouse with Malaysian and international students.

The HBS officers were at times, attending the Malaysian Students queries normally regarding students visa, ACR and passport issues. The issues then will be relayed back to the Consulate office for further assistance and to make sure all Malaysian students are in good hands.

On August 2017, the Consulate General of Malaysia hosted the Sambutan Hari Raya Aidilfitri that was attended by all Malaysians in Davao City, The Councilors from the City Hall of Davao, the head of Davao City Police Office Region 11, and from the office of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia as well as notable guests from the local government office. PHILIPPINES NATIONAL HEROES DAY On 28th of August, 2017, the Consulate attended the floral offering in conjunction with the Philippines National Heroes Day in Davao City hosted by the City Office of Davao.

OFFICIAL EVENTS ATTENDED BY THE CONSULATE OFFICE 1. The 72nd Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia

On 1st of September, 2017 the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia hosted the 72nd Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia at the Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City.

H.E. Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia Berlian Napitupulu together with his spouse Elizabeth; welcomed the HBS Officers along with guests from Davao’s business, entities, government agencies, hospitality and service sectors.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia had been aggressive on promoting their bilateral and trade relations with Mindanao, and it was clearly endorsed on the message by the Davao City Mayor, Honorable Sara Duterte as being relayed in the event by the City’s Administrator Zuleika Lopez.

The Consulate General of Malaysia congratulates the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia for their 72nd anniversary and for a commemorative event held that night.

OFFICIAL EVENTS ATTENDED BY THE CONSULATE OFFICE 2. Donating and distributing the school supplies to the Pagan Grande Elementary School, Marilog.

On 10th of December, 2017 HBS officer joined the Mio Davao Touring Club on the trip to General Roxas District, Marilog on the 45km journey to the Pagan Grande Elementary School for the donation and the distribution of school supplies.

The school was in a remote area and attended by 151 students from the Kindergarten 2 up to grade six with 1 principal and 4 teachers.

The event showcased the Malaysian government policy on helping the needy and working together with local group to create positive outcome on the contributions done by the efforts of the HBS on his personal capacity and the government as a whole.
