UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992. • Penalties: If the two teams are level after 90 minutes, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played. If they are still all square after the additional 30 minutes, kicks from the penalty mark determine which club wins the trophy. • Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case of repeated cautions, a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc). Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season. Exceptionally, all yellow cards and pending yellow-card suspensions expire on completion of the play-offs. They are not carried forward to the group stage. Cautions and pending yellow-card suspensions from club competition matches expire at the end of the season. • RESPECT and jersey exchange: During this season's UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League matches UEFA's RESPECT campaign is focusing on the jersey exchange between players. This ritual is believed to have begun in 1931 when France beat England for the first time. The French players were so ecstatic to have won they asked the English players if they could have their jerseys as keepsakes and the English obliged. Today swapping shirts is common practice in football, with players often pre-defining between themselves who they will exchange their jerseys with after the match. Through this simple act players show sportsmanship and acceptance for their opponents. UEFA has incorporated this gesture into its RESPECT campaign. By linking RESPECT with swapping shirts, we are hoping to make a connection with players and fans alike, encouraging all to swap jerseys as symbol of their RESPECT for diversity in football. It is differences in football that make the game so unique. • Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and since 2007/08, at least eight places have been reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half could be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list continues to exist – involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday. In 2006/07 the number of locally-trained players required began at four but rose to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained. A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. • Player registration: UEFA regulations state that a player may not play in a UEFA club competition for more than one club in the course of the same season. However, a player who has been fielded in the first, second or third qualifying round or the play-offs of the UEFA Champions League is entitled to play for another club as from the group stage. Moreover, as from the start of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players. One player of those three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded in the same competition for another club or for another club that is currently in the same competition. • Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness. Therefore, UEFA assumes no liability for the use or interpretation of information contained herein. More information can be found in the competition regulations on uefa.com.

Competition records UEFA Champions League final: Did you know? • Spain are the most successful nation with six triumphs, one more than Italy. Spain's wins – 1998, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2009 and 2011 – came from nine final dates while Italy were victorious in 1994, 1996, 2003, 2007 and 2010 from their 11 appearances. England emerged victorious in 1999, 2005, 2008 and 2012 and were losing finalists in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 while Germany were winners in 1997 and 2001 and runners-up in 1999, 2002, 2010 and 2012. • No team has played in more finals than AC Milan as 2007 marked their sixth appearance. They equalled Real Madrid CF's of three victories with that triumph against Liverpool FC in Athens, a mark FC Barcelona matched in 2011 thanks to a final defeat of Manchester United FC. • Italy with 26 has the most appearances per nation in all-time European Cup finals – of those 12 have ended in victory and 14 in defeat. England has recorded 12 wins from 19 final appearances. Spain has 22 final appearances (13 wins/nine defeats), Germany 15 (six wins), Portugal nine (four wins) and the Netherlands eight (six wins). • There have been three previous finals between teams from the same country: in 2000 Real Madrid CF beat Valencia CF 3-0 at the , three years later AC Milan defeated Juventus on penalties at Old Trafford and in 2008 Manchester United FC overcame Chelsea FC in Moscow, also on spot kicks. • In the previous 20 UEFA Champions League finals, there have been 14 outright wins and six matches decided on shoot-outs. A total of 51 goals have been scored with the most common results being 2-1 and 1-1, which have happened on four occasions; three finals have finished 1-0. • Fifteen European Cup finals have gone to extra time. The finals of 1958, 1968, 1970 and 1992 were decided in the additional period, while the 1974 showpiece between FC Bayern München and Club Atlético de Madrid ended 1-1 after 120 minutes with Bayern subsequently winning a replay. The other ten finals were settled by a penalty shoot-out after extra time: in 1984, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012 when Chelsea FC defeated Bayern 4-3 in the shoot-out after a 1-1 draw. • Milan's 4-0 win against FC Barcelona in the 1994 final remains the biggest winning margin and the Rossoneri were also involved in the highest scoring showpiece when they shared six goals with Liverpool in 2005 before penalties. In terms of the European Cup, Madrid's 7-3 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960 remains the most impressive while Bayern (1974 v Club Atlético de Madrid) and Milan (1989 v FC Steaua Bucureşti) also recorded 4-0 successes. • No player has scored a hat-trick in a UEFA Champions League final. Daniele Massaro (Milan 1994), Karlheinz Riedle (Borussia Dortmund 1997), Hernán Crespo (Milan 2005), Filippo Inzaghi (2007) and Diego Milito (2010) all struck twice. In European Cup terms, Ferenc Puskás scored four goals in Madrid's 7-3 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960, when Alfredo di Stéfrano found the net three times; Puskás scored another final hat-trick in 1962 with Pierino Prati (Milan 1969) the only other player to have managed a final hat-trick. • Only Raúl González (Madrid 2000 and 2002), Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona 2006 and 2009) and Lionel Messi (Barcelona 2009 and 2011) have scored in two UEFA Champions League finals – part of an exclusive club of 16 players to have found the net in more than one European Cup showpiece. Alfredo di Stéfano and Puskás lead the list having each scored seven goals for Madrid. • Paolo Maldini's goal 51 seconds into the 2005 showpiece is the fastest in a UEFA Champions League final. • Jens Lehmann (2006) and Didier Drogba (2008) are the only players to be dismissed in a European Cup final. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • This season Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.
