CONFERENCE PROGRAM

CONFERENCE THEME

Every year sees an increase in appreciation of the global nature of crime in the 21st century. No matter the size of a domestic jurisdiction, over the last generation all involved in working for justice have witnessed the rapid rise in complexity of crime detection and prevention, as physical and virtual elements of evidence require to be pursued across jurisdictions. Victims and perpetrators are often no longer in the same location and indeed may never have come into personal contact. Detection in respect of one victim in one country frequently reveals a tangled trail of international dealings that requires to be unravelled before a full picture of events can be confirmed and acted upon. This has thrown up new challenges for all those who work in law enforcement, prosecution, defence, courts, rehabilitation services and prisons. As criminals seek out new ways to profit from exploitation of children and adults for sexual and labour purposes and expand their opportunities for e-crime, law enforcement and domestic legal systems are continually developing new ways of evidence gathering and presentation, more rapid processes for extradition and appropriate care for the victims of crime and for those who are accused and find themselves tried and convicted in foreign jurisdictions. The conference will consider current and future criminal justice responses in the context of these current issues facing the Society’s membership in dealing with crime in the 21st century.

All Plenary Sessions and Workshops will take place at the Assembly Rooms Edinburgh, 54 George Street, Edinburgh EH2 2LR.
