Another Dawson heritage building surrendered to fire on the morning of September 20. The former Bear Creek residence belonging to Peggy Kormendy and her late husband, Steve, went up in flames in the wee hours of the morning. Deputy Fire Chief David “Buffalo” Taylor reports that the fire department got the call at 4:27 a.m. and arrived at the building, located at the corner of Third Avenue and York Street, to find it “fully engaged”. Seventeen members of the department responded to the call and the fire was fought from the time they arrived at the scene until 9:30 the next morning. There was no hope of saving the building, which was an old structure containing both sawdust and fiberglass insulation. There was a continuous drizzle going on during the battle, which was a bit of help as there was also a stiff breeze blowing sparks south onto the next block. Taylor says some fire fighters were detailed to keep an eye on that block for any possible ignitions. The building was empty and has not been in use as a residence since not long after the 1979 flood according to Peggy Kormendy. The basement was flooded at that time and the other water damage made the family decide to relocate. Power was kept on at the building in order to run the army style freezers in the outbuilding next to York Street. That was also badly burned. Taylor says the investigation of the fire went on all day until about 7 that night and the preliminary analysis is that the cause was electrical. The point of origin seems to have been near the electrical panel. A definitive decision will be reached after the Yukon Fire Marshall’s office has run its own investigation. There was no one in the house. By the end of the weekend the unsafe charred shell of the building had been leveled to address possible safety concerns. Contractor Jim Williams, who is also a member of the town’s Historic Advisory Committee, notes that it is a shame to lose the c building. It was one of the ones that he was used to directing people to look at if they wanted to use shingles instead of cove siding on the exterior of their homes. He’s hoping there are enough photographs of the building to act as references. The Sun obtained funding in late 2009 from the City of Dawson, YTG’s Heritage Branch and the Community Development Fund to conserve and archive early issues and make them available once again in the public domain. This is a great resource for students, writers and historians, and also for prospective tourists with an interest in Dawson City’s life. Each month, we are re-printing our front pages from 20 years ago (seen above) as a souvenir of our lively history. If you want to see page 2 and beyond, check out our website. Past issues are available there for download. Go to http://klondikesun.com. More will be added periodically (heh) when we have time! P18 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2013 THE KLONDIKE SUN The real gold is in the garden

Story by Helen Dewell Results & Photos submitted by Tarie Castellarin - - The 2013 Horticultural Exhibition was a suc cess! We were thrilled to have over 60 partici pants in a variety of categories. Jack Fraser’s contribution to Dawson’s gardening scene was- celebrated. (Thank you to the Fraser family for providing Jack’s biography and photo.) In keep ing with the spirit of the north, Jack prospected, mined, trapped, and gardened. - Molly MacDonald and staff members at the Dawson City Museum created the displays show- casing the history of gardening, complete with historical photos of the Klondike. Locals and visi tors alike were wowed by the variety of produce grown in the land of the midnight sun. Thank you to the market gardeners: Karen Digby & Grant Dowdell, Jack & Lucy Vogt, and Maryanne- Davis for donating the high quality produce for the silent auction. The inspiration for this show case came from their imagination. Sylvie Gammie was the highest bidder. Money raised from the silent auction was donated to the Food Bank. We would like to acknowledge the local restaurants for participating in the silent auction. After a long hard day of panning for gold Her Paw! What an awful sight Became another day of nothing to be sold It glowed a tell-a-tale orange bright!

The last of Master's stores was stewing in a pot Toopy licked her paw to no avail At least he would soon be eating something piping hot She tried hiding her paw with her tail

Toopy sniffs the air In come Master all in his glee When Master is ready to declare... ready for a feed of spaghetti

"Dis ghetti is not for you! He peered in the pot You already ate yer doggy stew!" There was none! Not even a drop!

Toopy patiently hides "Toopy!" He shouted angrily Waiting for Master to go outside "What have you done with my spaghetti?"

"Finally he is gone!" "Not me! Not me!" Toopy sings in a song Cried little Toopy

Immersed in a trance This lie began to unfold She jumps up and begins the spaghetti dance! As her orange paw glowed

In the pot with her paw "Man's best friend indeed" The ghetti wraps round her claw Sneered the hungry displeased

That pot of spaghetti was filled to the top ...and there you have it! You would not believe she ate every last drop! The tale of Toopy Orange Paw Writer's note: This above amateur poem was conjured up last week while playing cards with my husband on our first camping trip to the Yukon. Inspiration was drawn from my beloved Norwegian elkhound, Toopy, and her mischievous ways. Earlier in the evening my husband thought it would be cute to cover he paw in spaghetti sauce and she quickly received the nick name Toopy Orange Paw! I have little knowledge on how to compose a poem but thought it would be fun to pass this along.

watched enough, now was the time to play. Mikey walked into Gerties at 1.30pm after registering his name there an hour earlier for a no limit, Texas hold ‘em poker game. The supervisor, who Mikey knew by now, tried to talk him out of wasting the money he had worked so hard to get but Mikey was determined. ‘I figure I know what I’m doing,’ was all he would say. The game started at 2pm and Mikey was pleased to see that the table was full of regulars; Tiny, Red, Joey, Charlie, Cody, Larry, Ricky and Jim. The first hour he just about held his money; losing a few hands, winning a few hands. Then the cards were dealt that he was waiting for. Mikey smiled to himself when he saw them and he played that hand like the true poker player he was. At the end of the hand Red turned over his cards slowly and deliberately, but Mikey knew he had him; he had seen the twitch of his left eye when Red had placed his first bet. Red was bluffing and Mikey had the cards to beat him. Sure enough Red had a good hand, but Mikey had him beat fair and square. That wasn’t the only hand Mikey won, it was just the start; by the end of that afternoon he had $35,000 dollars. Maybe not a fortune; not yet anyhow, but Mikey was on his way. Just like the 160 mile long, clear sparkling waters of the Klondike picks up driftwood on its long trek to the Yukon. Mikey Martin wasn’t as young and innocent as he first appeared. His hippy parents may have only played poker for match sticks, but they had taught him real good and he had picked up every trick they knew in his short life. Luck, like life, is not about winning or losing. It’s about how you play the cards you’re dealt with.
